Finishes, Protection & Ageing
Timber is a living material that changes - it takes a finish, it wears, and left outside it silvers to grey - so the last act of designing with wood is deciding how to protect it, how to let it age, and how to design for a surface that will not stay the way it looked on opening day
Concrete looks much the same in fifty years. Timber does not - it takes light, wear and weather into itself, and either you design for that or it surprises you.
Most building materials are chosen partly because they are inert - they resist change, and the aim is that they look on their fiftieth birthday roughly as they did on their first. Timber is not like that, and pretending it is leads to disappointment. Wood is a natural, once-living material that keeps responding to the world after it is built into a building: it takes a finish differently along and across its grain, it wears where hands and feet touch it, it darkens or fades in sunlight, and left outdoors in sun and rain it weathers, over years, to a soft silver-grey. This is not failure; it is the nature of the material - but it is a nature you have to design for, not against.
That is what this final lesson of the module is about: the surface of the timber over time. It covers the finishes and coatings you can put on wood and what each does to its look and its protection; how to protect exposed timber from its three enemies at the surface - ultraviolet light, physical wear, and above all moisture; and how timber ages, indoors and out, so that you can design deliberately for the change rather than being ambushed by it. As throughout the course, the aesthetic and the intent are yours, while the binding performance - especially moisture durability and anything touching fire - is deferred to the specialists and the code. The goal is a timber surface that ages the way you meant it to.

Finishes and coatings - what they do, and what they cannot do
A finish on timber does several jobs at once, and choosing one means deciding which of those jobs matters most for a given surface. A finish can change the look - warming or cooling the colour, adding sheen or keeping it matt, evening out or emphasising the grain; it can add protection against ultraviolet light, wear, marking and moisture at the surface; and it can change the feel and maintenance of the wood, from a bare, tactile surface that must be treated gently to a sealed one that shrugs off spills. There is no single best finish, only the right one for what a particular surface has to do and look like.
Broadly, finishes fall into families along a spectrum. At one end is bare or barely-treated timber - the most natural look and feel, but the least protected and the quickest to grey, mark and stain. Then come penetrating finishes such as oils and some stains, which soak into the wood, keep much of its natural texture and matt look, are relatively easy to refresh by simply re-applying, but offer less of a hard barrier against wear and UV. At the other end are film-forming coatings such as lacquers, varnishes and some paints, which lay a protective layer on top of the wood, give the most robust protection against wear, moisture and marking, but can look more obviously coated, can trap the natural feel under a skin, and are harder to repair invisibly because a damaged film has to be stripped and redone rather than just topped up. Interior mass-timber surfaces are often left bare or lightly oiled to keep the warmth and tactility that were the point of exposing them, with tougher coatings reserved for high-wear or wet areas.
The crucial honesty is about what a finish cannot do. A surface finish manages UV, wear, marking and appearance, and it slows the take-up of surface moisture - but it is not a substitute for keeping the timber genuinely dry through good design and detailing. No coating turns structural timber into a material that can be left wet; moisture protection is achieved by the building design - shedding water, avoiding traps, keeping the wood in a dry service condition - and the finish is a surface layer on top of that, not a replacement for it. Treating a finish as waterproofing is a classic and costly mistake. Choose the finish for look, feel, wear and UV; achieve durability through design, and defer the binding moisture and durability strategy to the specialists.

Protecting exposed timber - UV, wear and, above all, moisture
Exposed timber faces three enemies at its surface, and protecting it well means addressing each in the right way - two with finishes and detailing, and the most important with design. The first is ultraviolet light. Sunlight breaks down the surface of wood over time, fading and greying it and, outdoors, gradually eroding the very surface fibres. UV-protective finishes and pigmented stains can slow this and hold a colour for longer, but no clear finish stops it entirely, and any external coating relied on for UV protection needs periodic re-application - so UV protection is as much a maintenance commitment as a product choice. The second is physical wear: floors, handrails, tabletops and any surface that is touched or walked on takes abrasion, denting and marking, and here tougher, film-forming finishes earn their place, along with sensible design that puts the most robust surfaces where the wear actually is.
The third enemy is moisture, and it is in a different league because it is not merely a surface problem but the thing that can destroy structural timber. Wood must be kept in a dry service condition; sustained wetting leads to decay - fungal rot that consumes the wood - and this is timber's real durability threat, covered properly in Module 6. The essential point for finishes is the one from the previous section, stated again because it is so often got wrong: you protect timber from moisture by design, not by coating. Good detailing sheds water off timber, avoids details that trap or pond it, keeps it away from persistent damp, protects it during construction before the building is closed in, and keeps it dry in service - and the finish is only a thin surface layer that helps at the margins. Where timber is genuinely exposed to weather, it must either be a naturally durable species or properly preservative-treated, and even then designed to dry out.
The honest hierarchy of protection, then, runs: design and detailing first (keep it dry, shed water, protect during construction), species and treatment next (choose durable or treated timber where exposure demands it), and finish last (manage UV, wear and look on a surface that is already being kept dry by the design). Getting that order wrong - hoping a coating will compensate for a wet detail - is how timber buildings fail. The binding durability strategy, the species and treatment decisions, and anything touching fire performance of a finish are for the timber and fire specialists and the code; the designer chooses the look and the wear-appropriate finish and, above all, designs the building to keep its timber dry.
How timber ages - greying, patina and the honest life of wood
Timber changes as it ages, and understanding how is what lets you design with the change rather than being disappointed by it. Indoors, protected from weather, the main change is usually colour: many timbers mellow and deepen over time, warming to a richer tone, while some lighten; sunlight through windows can darken or fade patches unevenly if one area is lit far more than another. These indoor changes are generally gentle and often beautiful - the wood gains a lived-in warmth - but they are worth anticipating, because a timber surface that is half in permanent sun and half in shade can age into two visibly different colours if that is not considered.
Outdoors, the change is far more dramatic and is the classic story of weathering timber: exposed external wood greys. Under ultraviolet light and repeated wetting and drying, the surface fibres break down and lose their colour, and over months and years fresh honey-coloured timber turns, through a mellowing middle stage, to a soft silver-grey patina. This is a natural, well-understood process and, crucially, greying is not decay - a silvered timber surface can be perfectly sound structurally; it is a cosmetic surface change, not rot. Many designers love it and specify timber precisely so it will silver, embracing the way it settles into a landscape. The real design risk outdoors is not the greying itself but uneven weathering: timber that greys evenly looks intentional and handsome, while timber that is sheltered in some places and exposed in others - under an eaves overhang, behind a downpipe, below a sill - greys patchily and can look neglected. Designing for even exposure, or deliberately controlling where shelter falls, is how you keep weathered timber looking considered.
The deeper idea is a shift in attitude that timber asks of a designer used to inert materials: wood has an honest life, and the design should account for its whole arc, not just opening day. A timber building will look different in five, fifteen and fifty years, and the good ones are designed for how they will look then - the colour they will mellow or silver to, the way wear will show on the surfaces people touch, the patina that will accumulate. This is closer to how we think about natural materials like stone, leather or copper than about painted plasterboard, and it is one of the quiet pleasures of the material. Design for the ageing: choose finishes and details knowing the wood will change, decide whether you are holding a colour or letting it go, and detail exposed timber for even, graceful weathering - while deferring the binding durability, species and treatment decisions to the specialists.
Indoors: gentle colour mellowing (watch uneven sun). Outdoors: greys to silver over years - that's patina, NOT decay. Risk = UNEVEN weathering. Design for the whole arc.
Designing for change - maintenance, expectations and the long view
Because timber changes, designing with it responsibly means designing the change itself - and that turns out to be as much about people and maintenance as about products. The first task is setting expectations honestly, especially with clients. A client who is told the exposed timber will look exactly as it does on handover forever will be unhappy when it mellows, marks or silvers; a client who is helped to understand and even to love the way wood ages will be delighted by the same changes. Part of designing with timber is this conversation - explaining that the material is alive, that patina and mellowing are features not faults, and agreeing which surfaces will be held to a look and which will be allowed to age freely. Managing expectations is a design deliverable, not an afterthought.
The second task is designing for maintenance. Finishes that protect against UV and wear need periodic renewal - external coatings re-applied, oiled surfaces re-oiled, high-wear areas refinished - and a building whose timber is meant to hold a particular look commits its owner to that upkeep. So the honest design decision is to match the finish strategy to the maintenance the building will actually get: if it will be lovingly maintained, a finish that needs renewal can hold a pristine look; if it will not, it is often wiser to choose surfaces and species that age gracefully with little intervention - to let interior timber mellow, and let external timber silver evenly - rather than to specify a finish that will look worse and worse as it is neglected. Designing for realistic maintenance, not ideal maintenance, is a mark of a mature timber designer.
There is an Indian and emerging-market dimension to close on. India's climate is demanding for timber - intense sun, heavy monsoon wetting, high humidity and biological threats like termites and fungal decay - which makes moisture protection, durable or treated species, and realistic maintenance even more important here, and makes casual assumptions about finishes even more dangerous. It also means the traditions worth learning from are the vernacular ones: much Indian and tropical timber architecture protects wood through design - deep overhangs, raised structures, ventilated details that keep timber dry and let it breathe - which is exactly the design-first hierarchy this lesson argues for, proven over centuries. Whether in India or elsewhere, the through-line is the same: timber is a living surface that will change; choose finishes for look, feel, UV and wear; protect it from moisture by design first; embrace or control its ageing deliberately; design for the maintenance it will realistically get; and defer the binding durability, species, treatment and fire decisions to the specialists and the code.

Timber is a living surface, so the last act of designing with it is deciding how it is finished, protected and allowed to age. In this workshop you will take one timber surface and design its whole life - finish, protection and the change over time.

- 5Set the expectation and maintenance: write two sentences you would tell the client about how this timber will change, and state the realistic maintenance the finish needs - then confirm your choice still makes sense for the upkeep the building will actually get.

Choose finishes for the surfaces you specify - bare or lightly oiled to keep warmth and tactility where it matters, tougher film coatings for high-wear or wet areas - knowing each trades look and feel against protection and repairability. Anticipate how interior timber will mellow and how uneven sunlight can age surfaces differently, and design with that. Above all, help clients love the way wood ages, so patina reads as character not defect, and plan finishes around the maintenance the space will actually receive. Coordinate any moisture-exposed timber with the specialists - a finish is not a moisture strategy - and keep the wellbeing warmth that made exposed timber worth choosing.
