Plumbing

Pipes, valves, joints and the honest position on lead and asbestos

Two units of systems; now the parts themselves. This is the unit where an interior designer earns credibility on site — or loses it. It is also, by some distance, the part of the subject most thickly encrusted with confident folklore, so it is the unit where the course’s honesty rule works hardest. Three of the beliefs corrected here are repeated daily by people who have been in the trade for decades. Two of them concern materials you will be asked about by clients, and getting them exactly right — neither alarmist nor dismissive — is a professional skill in itself.

Which pipe, for which duty

Strip away the catalogue and the logic is short. Cold water inside a building: PVC-U. Hot and cold: CPVC or PP-R — this is where India has largely settled. Buried mains: HDPE or ductile iron. Soil and waste above ground: PVC-U Type B, or cast iron where fire rating and acoustics justify the cost. Underground sewers: glazed stoneware, which is acid-resistant and outlasts everything else in the ground. And a short obsolete list you will still meet in older buildings and older textbooks: lead, wrought iron, and asbestos cement. Learn the spine first; the codes and classes hang off it.[1, 2, 3]

Note the ~4:1 pressure derating from 27 °C to 82 °C (SDR 11: 2.76 → 0.68 MPa). The single most useful number in the unit.

Status is honest, not tidy: asbestos cement is marked contested because it is legal in India and a Group 1 carcinogen at the same time — both are true, and the gap between them is the lesson.

The techniques

Joints — and why solvent welding is not gluing

Calling solvent cement “glue” is not pedantry. It produces the wrong technique — and a joint that fails.[8, 2, 3]

There is no glue line. The joint becomes one piece. fitting socket (tapered) pipe TIGHT — the surfaces FUSE strength develops fastest here LOOSE — the cement BONDS slower, weaker — but it fills Dry-fit: the pipe should stop one-third to two-thirds in. If it BOTTOMS OUT, reject it — there is no interference to fuse. The solvents dissolve the top layer of BOTH surfaces. The cement carries dissolved resin OF THE SAME POLYMER. When the solvent evaporates, it is one continuous piece. Which is why PVC cement on CPVC fails — and why no Indian standard for CPVC cement exists at all. IS 14182 is uPVC only. India uses ASTM F493.

It is not glue, and there is no glue line

Calling solvent cement “glue” is not pedantry — it produces the wrong technique. The solvents soften and dissolve the top layer of both the pipe and the fitting, loosening the molecular structure; the cement carries dissolved resin of the SAME polymer; and when the solvent evaporates the joint has become one continuous piece. There is no adhesive layer. The most useful subtlety comes from the cement manufacturers themselves: in the TIGHT part of the joint the surfaces fuse, while in the LOOSE part the cement merely bonds to both surfaces — and the fused part develops strength faster. That is why the interference fit matters, why you dry-fit and expect the pipe to stop a third to two-thirds of the way in, and why a pipe that bottoms out in the socket is rejected rather than celebrated.[2, 8]

And a terminology trap that catches everyone

The valve family

Sort valves by what they do — isolate, regulate, or act on their own — and the family organises itself. Then learn the one word that means two different objects depending on who is saying it.[9]

Sort valves by what they DO, not by shape ISOLATION on / off only. Poor at throttling. Gate — IS 778 Ball — IS 9890 quarter turn, full bore REGULATION throttle the flow deliberately. Globe — IS 778 flow changes direction Pressure-reducing IS 9739 — lower floors AUTOMATIC no hand touches them. Check — IS 778 pressure alone operates it Float — IS 1703 shuts a tank at a set level The terminology trap — ask which one they mean On an Indian site, “ball valve” = the quarter-turn ISOLATING valve (IS 9890). In British usage, “ball valve” = the FLOAT valve / ball cock in a tank (IS 1703). IS 1703’s own title is “float valve”. Two different objects. One name. IS 778 covers gate, globe and check valves: 8 to 100 mm, working temperature up to 45 °C, non-shock working pressure up to 1.6 MPa. Class 1 to 1.0 MPa; Class 2 to 1.6.

Four tests, four purposes

Testing for leaks

The numbers are small, specific and easy to swap. Learn which test belongs to which system — and note the ball test is not a leak test at all.[10]

SMOKE Gas-tightness of pipework ABOVE ground 25 mm water · 15 min after all trap seals are filled · IS 1742 cl. 8.2.2 Burning oily waste or tar paper. The code says plainly: “chemical smokes are not satisfactory.” AIR Soundness — quick, and no mess 65 mm water · 3 min constant for three minutes · IS 5329 cl. 7.2.2 Smoke then LOCATES what the air test revealed. It is not the acceptance test. WATER Underground drains — stoneware, concrete 1.5 m head · 10 min tolerance 2 litres per cm dia per km · IS 1742 The code’s own note: NOT applicable to sanitary pipe work above ground level. BALL Obstruction and alignment — NOT leakage bore − 13 mm inserted at the high end · IS 1742 cl. 8.2.4(a) Companion: the mirror-and-lamp test. A straight drain shows the FULL circle of light. Beware imported numbers: “38 mm water gauge”, “1-inch water column”, “ten-foot head” are BS, IPC and UPC figures. They are not IS 5329, and they will not match your drawing.

One safety absolute, in the manufacturers’ own words: “Pressure testing with compressed air is dangerous and can result in injury or death. Do not use air.” Water is nearly incompressible, so a water-tested joint that fails simply weeps. Air stores energy like a spring, and a plastic fitting failing under air becomes shrapnel. Both major Indian CPVC manuals print this warning. Believe them.

Vocabulary

Key terms

Solvent cement welding

Joining PVC or CPVC by chemically softening both surfaces so the polymer chains interdiffuse and fuse into one mass. It is not adhesion; there is no glue line.

SDR (Standard Dimension Ratio)

Outside diameter divided by wall thickness. A LOWER SDR means a thicker wall and higher pressure rating. IS 15778 CPVC uses SDR 11, 13.5 and 17.

Ball valve

TERMINOLOGY TRAP. On an Indian site this means the quarter-turn isolating valve (IS 9890). In British usage it means the float valve / ball cock — and IS 1703's own title for that is FLOAT VALVE.

Gate valve

A valve where flow is controlled by a gate (wedge or disc) between body ends in line with each other; pressure acts on one side and there is no change in direction of flow (IS 778 cl. 2).

Globe valve

A screwdown stop valve with a roughly spherical body; the disc is lifted from a seat by a stem at right angles to the body ends, pressure acts on the underside, and flow changes direction (IS 778).

Check valve

A valve permitting flow in one direction but checking all return flow, operated by pressure alone with no external means of control (IS 778). Lift, swing and spring-loaded types.

Bib cock

A draw-off tap with a horizontal screwed male inlet, discharging downward from a wall (IS 781:1984, for cold service up to 1.0 MPa).

Caulking

Compacting poured molten lead into a cast iron spigot-and-socket joint with a caulking iron so it grips gas- and water-tight against the socket.

Khurra / spout

The roof outlet at a rainwater pipe head. IS 1742 requires the strainer area to be 1½ to 2 times the area of the pipe it connects to.

Air gap

The physical vertical separation between a tap outlet and a fixture's flood level — the primary defence against backflow contaminating the potable supply.

Apply it

Study task

A client asks you two questions: “Isn’t copper always better than CPVC?” and “Aren’t asbestos pipes banned?” Write both answers, in plain language, in under 150 words each. The discipline is this: you may not simply say yes or no, and you may not overstate in either direction. Copper genuinely pits in aggressive water and conducts heat roughly 2,900 times better than CPVC — but it has no domestic temperature ceiling and CPVC stops at 82 °C. Asbestos genuinely is not banned in India — and it genuinely is an IARC Group 1 carcinogen, and a 2024 Quality Control Order made its ISI mark mandatory. Your job is to hold both halves of each answer at once, and still leave the client knowing what to do. That is what an expert sounds like.

Testing: smoke = gas-tightness above ground (25 mm WG / 15 min); air = soundness (65 mm WG / 3 min); water = underground drains (1.5 m head / 10 min); ball = obstruction, not leakage.
