A good product tells you how to use it — no label needed

A product communicates through the senses — visual, auditory, tactile — and, in Don Norman’s key idea, a good product tells you how to use it. An affordance is the action a form makes possible (a handle affords pulling); a signifier is the cue that shows how; with feedback and natural mapping, no instructions are needed. The ‘Norman door’ you push when you should pull is a design failure. And a display must match the task — a digital number for a value, a dial or light for a glance.

How a product speaks

A product communicates through the senses — visual (form, controls, displays), auditory (a click, a beep), tactual (the feel of a grip). Because most information is visual, the process of seeing and visual discrimination shape how controls are made distinguishable.[1]

How a product communicates

A product communicates through the SENSES: VISUAL (its form, controls, displays, colour), AUDITORY (a click, a beep, a warning tone), TACTUAL (the feel of a grip, a detent, a texture that says 'hold here') and even OLFACTORY. Human factors studies how we PERCEIVE — the process of seeing, of discriminating one control or reading from another — so a designer can use the senses deliberately. A product that speaks clearly through the right senses is understood at a glance; one that relies on a single, weak cue is missed.[1]

Affordances & signifiers

An affordance is the action a form makes possible; a signifier is the cue that shows how; feedback confirms an action and mapping lays controls out to match. A Norman door lies about its affordance — and a product needing a ‘PUSH’ label has failed its signifiers.[2]

It tells you how to use it

Don Norman's key idea: a good product TELLS you how to use it. An AFFORDANCE is the action an object's form makes possible — a button affords pressing, a handle affords pulling, a flat plate affords pushing. A SIGNIFIER is the cue that shows WHERE and HOW to act — a shaped grip, an arrow, a highlighted edge. When form matches action, you know what to do without thinking. The famous 'NORMAN DOOR' — a door with a pull handle that you must push — LIES about its affordance, and is a design failure, not a user failure.[2]

Quantitative vs qualitative

Match the display to the task

A display must match the task: a quantitative display (a digital number) for a precise value, a qualitative one (a dial, a light) for a glance, a trend or a status. Choosing wrong is a real ergonomic error. Try the matcher below.[1]

When the user needs a sense of level, direction or 'how much is left' (a fuel level, a volume, rising or falling), the best display is:

An analog dial or bar shows level and change instantly — 'nearly empty', 'rising' — without reading a number.

Wrong type · A digital number is poor here: you must read it, remember the last one and compute the trend yourself.

Match the display TYPE to what the user needs — a precise value wants digital, a glance or trend wants a dial, a check wants a light, a hazard wants an alarm.

Quantitative vs qualitative

A DISPLAY must match the TASK. A QUANTITATIVE display gives a precise value — a digital number for a temperature, a time, a price. A QUALITATIVE display gives a glance, a trend or a status — an analog dial or bar for 'how full', a light for 'on'. Choosing wrong is a real ergonomic error: a digital fuel readout makes you compute whether you can get home, while a dial shows 'nearly empty' instantly; a dial makes you interpolate a value you needed exactly. Match the display TYPE to what the user actually needs.[1]

Study task

Find a product you often get wrong — a door you push when you should pull, a hob whose knobs you confuse, an appliance you press twice. Diagnose it with Norman’s ideas: does its form give the right affordance? Are the signifiers clear, or is there a stuck-on label doing their job? Is there feedback, and does the control layout map to what it controls? Redesign it so it needs no instructions. Then take one of its displays and, using the matcher, decide whether its type suits the task — and fix it if a digital readout should be a dial, or a dial should be a light. The test is a product that tells the user how to use it.
