Every design choice is a resource choice

Buildings and interiors are major consumers of energy, water and materials — so design is a responsibility, and every design choice is a resource choice. A ‘green’ material is judged over its whole life, not by a label; a low-impact interior starts with passive strategy (daylight, ventilation, durability) before efficient services. And responsibility and quality usually align — the resource-aware design is very often simply the better design.

Buildings consume resources

Buildings and interiors are major consumers of energy, water and materials, and producers of waste — and design choices shape all of it. This makes design a responsibility: every choice of material, system and layout is a resource choice, for the life of the building. Ignore it, and you design waste.[1, 2]

Design is responsibility

Buildings and interiors are major CONSUMERS of resources — energy to run and to make, water, and vast quantities of MATERIALS — and producers of waste, and design choices directly shape all of it. This reframes design as RESPONSIBILITY: every choice of material, system, layout and finish is a resource choice, with consequences for the life of the building and the planet. A designer who ignores this is, quietly, designing waste. The studio treats a project as a responsible act: to meet human needs CREATIVELY while consuming as little as the design honestly can. Responsible, resource-aware design is not an optional 'green' extra bolted on at the end — it is a core part of designing well.[1, 2]

Choosing sustainable materials is central — but ‘green label = sustainable’ is a nuanced half-truth. Judge a material over its whole life — embodied energy, sourcing, durability, health, end of life — against a simpler alternative. A ‘sustainable’ product shipped across the world, or one that fails fast, may be worse.[2, 3]

Whole-life, not a label

Choosing SUSTAINABLE or 'green' materials is central to a responsible project — recycled, low-carbon, bio-based, durable, healthy, low-emission materials. But 'green label = sustainable' is a NUANCED half-truth: a label is not proof. Each material must be judged over its WHOLE LIFE — its embodied energy, its sourcing and transport, its durability, its health and indoor air quality, and its end of life — against a simpler alternative. A 'sustainable' product shipped across the world, or one that fails in five years, may be worse than a plain local one. Real material sustainability is a whole-life JUDGEMENT, not a badge, and making it well is a core studio skill.[2, 3]

Passive first, then efficient

A low-impact interior starts with PASSIVE and responsible strategy, not gadgets. Use DAYLIGHT well; enable natural VENTILATION; respect the CLIMATE and orientation; keep spaces adaptable so they need not be rebuilt; reduce, reuse and recycle materials; and specify efficient services and healthy, durable finishes. The order matters: design PASSIVELY to cut the demand first, then make what remains efficient. This connects to everything else in the studio — a sustainable interior is usually also a healthier, more comfortable, better-value one. Responsibility and quality are not in tension; the resource-aware design is very often simply the BETTER design, for the client and for the world.[2, 3]

The fact that buildings and interiors consume large amounts of energy, water and materials and produce waste — which design choices directly shape, making design a responsibility.

Whole-life material judgement

Judging a material over its entire life — embodied energy, sourcing, durability, health, end of life — against a simpler alternative, rather than trusting a 'green' label.

Embodied energy

Study task

Take a design you are working on and audit it as a resource decision. List the biggest consumers — energy to run and to build, water, and the materials by quantity — and note where a different choice would cut them. Pick one ‘green’ material you might specify and weigh it honestly over its whole life (embodied energy, sourcing, durability, health, end of life) against a simpler local alternative — which really wins? Then list the passive moves that would cut demand first (daylight, ventilation, orientation, durability, adaptability) before any efficient gadget. Finally, name three ordinary design choices — a layout, a size, a finish — and show how each is quietly a resource choice. The goal is to hold responsibility as a lens over the whole design.
