Advanced Project Types

No single approach fits every building type

The studio designs across the advanced building types a professional meets — hospitality, retail, healthcare, office; urban interiors; transport or ‘interior ports’; exhibition; mobile units — and its central lesson is that no single approach fits every type. Each has its own drivers, users, codes and constraints. It is run as one major detailed design plus two minor problems, building both depth of resolution and breadth of range.

Each type its own problem

‘One method works for any project’ is a myth: a hospital, a shop, an airport and a railway coach each have their own drivers, users, codes and constraints. One approach does not fit all

The studio designs across the ADVANCED building types a professional meets, and its central lesson here is that no single approach fits every TYPE — 'one method works for any project' is a MYTH. A HOSPITAL, a SHOP, an AIRPORT and a railway COACH each have their own DRIVERS, users, codes and constraints, and a designer must understand each type DEEPLY, not apply one formula. Hospitality is driven by guest experience over a hidden back-of-house; retail by the customer journey and conversion; healthcare by safety, hygiene and calm; the office by productivity and wellbeing. The studio runs one major design in full detail plus two minor (time) problems. The major teaches full integration and detailing to a real standard; the minors teach speed, range and adapting the process to different types — together building the comprehensive, adaptable designer.[1]

Depth and range together

The studio is run as ONE MAJOR design problem developed in full DETAIL, plus TWO MINOR (time) problems solved more quickly. This structure is deliberate. The MAJOR project teaches full INTEGRATION and detailing to a real, professional standard — carrying one design all the way from programme to construction detail, code, spec and cost. The MINOR problems teach SPEED, RANGE and adaptability — applying the same disciplined process to different types under time pressure, the way real practice demands. Together they build both DEPTH of resolution and BREADTH of type — the comprehensive, adaptable designer who can take any project, of any type, from a brief to a resolved, buildable, responsible interior.[1]

Apply it — the capstone

Study task

Choose one major project type from the explorer — say a small hospital ward, a boutique store, or an airport lounge — and write its brief as this studio would run it. Name its distinct drivers, its users (including the differently-abled), the codes and constraints it must meet, and the one or two things that make it unlike any other type. Then pick two minor types you would pair with it as time problems, and say what each would teach you that the major would not. Sketch how you would run the major from programme to integrated, detailed, costed, responsible design — pulling together every earlier unit. The goal is the comprehensive designer who can take any type from a brief to a resolved, buildable interior.
