The designer's real work is integration, not decoration
The heart of the studio: interior design is the integration of diverse concerns — structure, services, code, ergonomics, cost, safety, experience — into one coherent whole, not decoration. Integration demands the technical realms: construction detailing that makes a design buildable, building codes and accessibility as the discipline creativity works within, custom furniture chosen when it earns its cost, and specification and cost as design decisions — because a design you cannot specify or cost is not finished.

Integration, not decoration
Interior design integrates structure, services, code, ergonomics, cost, safety, durability and experience into one resolved whole, all at once. ‘The designer’s job is to make it look good’ is a myth: aesthetics is one concern among many, and integrating them all is the real, difficult skill.[1, 2]
The real work
The heart of this studio — and of professional practice — is that interior design is the INTEGRATION of diverse functional concerns into one coherent whole. A resolved interior must satisfy STRUCTURE, SERVICES (electrical, plumbing, HVAC, lighting), building CODE, ERGONOMICS, COST, SAFETY, durability and EXPERIENCE, all at once, without any of them being ignored or fighting the others. 'The designer's job is to make it look good' is a MYTH: aesthetics is ONE concern among many, and the real, difficult skill is INTEGRATING them all so the space works, is safe, is buildable, is affordable AND is beautiful. A design that resolves only the look, and leaves the rest to chance, is not finished — it is a picture.[1, 2]
Detailing and codes
Construction detailing works out how materials actually meet and fix — design, not drafting, deciding quality, cost and durability. And building codes (India’s NBCS, SP 7:2026) and universal accessibility are the discipline within which creativity works, not its enemy — design with them from the start.[2, 3]
How it is actually built
A plan can look resolved and still be unbuildable at the JUNCTIONS. CONSTRUCTION DETAILING works out, in section and at large scale, how materials actually MEET, layer and are fixed — a floor meeting a wall, a ceiling detail, a built-in, a joint. This is design, not mere drafting: the detail decides QUALITY, cost, durability, and how the finished interior truly looks and lasts. A beautiful concept lives or dies in its details, and the studio trains a designer to detail — to think through construction to the last junction, so the design can actually be built well, and so the drawings a contractor works from are complete and correct.[2, 4]
Custom furniture, spec and cost
Custom furniture earns its cost when it solves what standard can’t — fit, storage, identity — not a reflex luxury. And ‘spec writing and cost estimating are boring admin’ is a myth: they are design decisions, where a design becomes buildable and affordable — a design you can’t specify or cost isn’t finished.[2, 4]
A tool, when it earns its cost
Comprehensive projects often need CUSTOM-designed furniture and cabinetry — a fitted wardrobe, a reception desk, a window seat, a display unit — designed and detailed for a specific space and use. But 'custom is always better' is a NUANCED half-truth: custom is not a reflex luxury. It EARNS its higher cost when it solves what standard furniture cannot — an exact fit into an awkward space, particular storage, a strong identity, an integrated function. Chosen for a real reason, custom is powerful and worth its cost; chosen just to show off, it is waste. The skill is knowing WHEN to design bespoke and when a good standard product is the wiser, cheaper choice.[2]

Study task
Take one part of a design — say a reception area. List every concern it must integrate: structure, services (lighting, power, AC), building code (egress, fire, accessibility), ergonomics, cost, safety, durability and experience — and note where any two might conflict, and how you’d resolve them together. Choose one junction (a floor-to-wall, a ceiling, a desk) and describe its construction detail: how the materials meet and are fixed. Decide one piece that should be custom and justify why standard furniture wouldn’t do. Finally, sketch a short specification (key materials and finishes) and a rough cost logic for it. The goal is to feel that a design is finished only when it is integrated, buildable, code-compliant and costed.
