Good design begins with the problem — not the form

A real project begins with holistic understanding — the built environment from macro to micro — and with real data and analysis. A brief becomes solvable through a programme (the spaces, areas, activities and adjacencies), and the problem is broken into its components — users, activities, site, constraints, budget, code. Design is a process, iterated from data to detail. And the honest heart of it: good design begins with the problem, not a form — the concept serves the brief.

A project begins by seeing the built environment as a holistic whole, from the macro (settlement, culture, economy) to the micro (room, detail), then doing the real work of data collection and analysis — survey, observe, gather, then understand. Analysis before synthesis: you can’t resolve a problem you haven’t understood.[1, 2]

From macro to micro

A comprehensive project begins by understanding the built environment as a HOLISTIC, living whole — from the MACRO (the settlement, the context, the culture and economy that shape it) to the MICRO (the building, the room, the detail). Everything connects: a space is shaped by geographic, socio-cultural, historic, political and economic forces, and a good designer reads those forces before drawing a line. This holistic seeing is what separates comprehensive design from decoration — the designer is solving a piece of a larger human environment, not styling a box. The studio trains this: collect widely, think across scales, and understand deeply before you design.[1, 2]

A brief is a wish; a programme makes it solvable — the spaces, their areas and activities, and the adjacencies (what must be near what). The problem is broken into its components — users, activities, site, constraints, budget, code — held all at once, so nothing is missed.[1, 2]

The brief, made solvable

A brief (‘design a boutique hotel’) is a wish; a PROGRAMME turns it into a solvable problem. The programme lists the SPACES a project needs, their AREAS and ACTIVITIES, their ADJACENCIES (what must be near what — the kitchen by the restaurant, the store by the back door), and the requirements each must meet. It is built from the data and analysis, and it is the yardstick a design is measured against: does it house everything, at the right size, in the right relationships? Building the programme — often as a schedule of spaces and an adjacency diagram — is where vague intentions become a precise, testable brief. It is the foundation the whole design stands on.[1]

Honestly · This is the heart of the studio: 'the designer's job is to make it look good' is a myth. Aesthetics is one concern among many, and INTEGRATING them all — so nothing is ignored and everything works together — is the real skill and the real difficulty.

Means: Working out and drawing, in section and at large scale, how materials actually MEET, layer and are fixed — a junction, a joint, a built-in — so the design can be built.

Honestly · The detail is where a design becomes real. A plan can look resolved and still be unbuildable at the junctions. Detailing is design, not drafting — it decides quality, cost, durability and how the finished interior truly looks and lasts.

The discipline, not the enemy

Means: The life-safety and accessibility rules a design must meet — egress, fire safety, structural and accessibility provisions (India's model code is the National Building Construction Standards, SP 7:2026, plus the Harmonised Guidelines for universal accessibility).

Honestly · NUANCED: codes and constraints do not kill creativity — they are the DISCIPLINE within which it works. A compliant, safe, accessible, buildable design is the real achievement, not a fantasy render. Design WITH the code, from the start, not against it.

Custom furniture & cabinetry

A tool, when it earns its cost

Means: Bespoke, built-in or custom-designed furniture and cabinetry — a fitted wardrobe, a reception desk, a window seat — designed and detailed for a specific space and use.

Honestly · NUANCED: custom is not a reflex luxury. It earns its higher cost when it solves what standard furniture cannot — an exact fit, particular storage, an identity, a difficult space. Chosen for a reason, it is powerful; chosen for show, it is waste.

Means: Writing the SPECIFICATION (the materials, finishes and standards) and the COST estimate (the bill of quantities and the budget) that make a design buildable and affordable.

Honestly · 'Spec writing and cost estimating are boring admin' is a myth: they are DESIGN decisions. A design you cannot specify or cost is not finished — the spec and the estimate are where a design becomes real, buildable and within reach, or not.

Means: Designing a space so people can find their way — through legible circulation, clear sightlines, landmarks and an intuitive layout — supported by signage and graphic identification.

Honestly · NUANCED: wayfinding is designed into the PLAN first — a space you can read without thinking — and signage is the last layer, not the fix for a confusing plan. A building that needs a sign at every turn was planned badly.

Means: The graphic identification of a space — directional and room signage, symbols and pictograms, and a consistent visual identity — that names and brands the interior.

Honestly · Signage identifies and reinforces identity, and in public and accessible spaces it is a requirement (clear, legible, often tactile and multilingual). But it works WITH a legible plan, not instead of one — the best sign confirms what the space already tells you.

The completing layer

Means: The final layer that completes a scheme — art, textiles, plants, objects, lighting accents — selected and placed to finish the design and give it life and character.

Honestly · Accessories complete and humanise a space, and are a real design decision, not an afterthought. But they finish a resolved design; they cannot rescue a poor plan. The layer that gives a room its soul, placed with the same care as the walls.

Means: Communicating a design through images — hand-drawn sketches and perspectives, and computer-generated renders — so a client can see and understand the space before it is built.

Honestly · A vital skill, both by hand (fast, expressive, thinking-on-paper) and by computer (precise, photoreal). Rendering communicates and persuades — but it is a means to show a design, judged by how truthfully it represents a real, resolved one.

Honestly · A MYTH. A gorgeous render can hide a bad plan — a room that does not work, is not buildable, or ignores the brief. The render SERVES the design; it does not replace it. Judge the plan and the integration, not the picture; substance under the shine.

Buildings as resource consumers

Honestly · This reframes design as responsibility: every choice of material, system and layout is a resource choice, for the life of the building. A designer who ignores this is designing waste. Responsible, resource-aware design is core, not optional.

'Green material = sustainable'

Means: Selecting sustainable or 'green' materials for a project — recycled, low-carbon, bio-based, durable, healthy — for a lower-impact interior.

Honestly · NUANCED: a 'green' label is not proof. A material must be judged over its WHOLE LIFE — embodied energy, sourcing, durability, health, end of life — against a simpler alternative. A 'sustainable' product shipped across the world, or one that fails fast, may be worse.

Data to detail, iterated

Design is a PROCESS, not a single leap of inspiration. It runs from DATA and analysis, to a CONCEPT (an organising idea that answers the problem), to DEVELOPMENT (working the concept into a real plan), to DETAILING (making it buildable), to PRESENTATION (communicating it) — and it ITERATES, looping back as each stage reveals more. The concept is not the start; it emerges FROM the problem and serves it. This is the honest correction to the romantic idea of design: the studio teaches a disciplined, repeatable process that turns understanding into a resolved design, again and again, on any project — not a wait for a flash of genius.[1]
