You cannot sign your way out of a confusing plan

In a complex public building, strangers have to find their way — and wayfinding is the whole cognitive process of doing so, of which signage is only one tool. The classic error is answering a confusing building with more and more signs, but you cannot sign your way out of a confusing plan. A legible building wayfinds itself through sightlines, landmarks and a clear hierarchy; signage — done with contrast, pictograms and tactile lettering — is the last layer that confirms a legible plan, never a rescue for a bad one.

Wayfinding is not signage

Wayfinding is the whole process of orienting and navigating; signage is one tool for it. ‘More signs mean better wayfinding’ is a myth — you cannot sign your way out of a confusing plan; the cure is architectural, fixing the plan.[1, 2]

The process vs one tool

WAYFINDING is the whole cognitive process of knowing where you are, where you are going and how to get there; SIGNAGE is just one tool that serves it. Confusing the two leads to the classic error: answering a confusing building with more and more signs. 'More signs mean better wayfinding' is a MYTH. A legible building lets people orient themselves largely WITHOUT signs — signs then confirm, rather than carry, the route. Wayfinding is designed into the plan first; signage comes last.[1, 2]

Sightlines, landmarks, hierarchy

A LEGIBLE building wayfinds itself through the plan. SIGHTLINES let you see your destination or the next decision point (you head for what you can see). LANDMARKS — a distinctive stair, a courtyard, a coloured wall — give memorable anchors ('turn at the red wall'). A clear HIERARCHY of spaces (a main route you cannot miss, off which lesser routes branch) tells you which way is 'the way'. And a legible ZONING (public grouped, private grouped) means you rarely have to search. These are Kevin Lynch's lessons brought indoors.[2]

Signage, as the last layer, needs high tonal contrast, clear type, consistent placement and just enough at each decision point. Inclusive signage uses familiar pictograms with tactile lettering and Braille — understood across language and vision.[1, 3]

The last, supporting layer

Signage, as the LAST layer, must be done well. It needs high tonal CONTRAST and clear, large type (colour alone excludes many); consistent PLACEMENT at decision points; and a clear hierarchy of its own (identify, then direct, then inform). It should say just enough, at the moment of decision, and no more — over-signing is as disorienting as under-signing. Good signage confirms a route the building has already suggested; it works with the plan, not against a bad one.[1, 3]

Studio task

Recall a public building where you got lost — a hospital, a mall, a station. Diagnose it: was the plan itself confusing (identical corridors, hidden stairs, no view out, no clear centre), and did the signs multiply to compensate? Then redesign for legibility without relying on signs: introduce sightlines to key destinations, a memorable landmark or two, a clear main-route hierarchy, and views out to keep visitors oriented. Only then add a minimal signage layer — high contrast, familiar pictograms, tactile and Braille at decision points. The test is that a first-time visitor could find their way largely by looking, with the signs merely confirming the route the building already tells them.
