Design for all — because access helps everyone

Barrier-free design is the floor; universal design is the goal (design for all from the start); inclusive design is the method (a human-centred process). The seven principles of universal design (Mace, 1997) are the working checklist. And ‘accessibility is an ugly, costly compromise’ is a myth: the curb-cut effect shows access built for disabled people benefits everyone — inclusion is not a compromise on good design; it is good design.

Barrier-free, universal, inclusive

Three related terms are often confused. BARRIER-FREE / ACCESSIBLE design REMOVES barriers so disabled people CAN use a space — the essential minimum, meeting the standards, but often retrofitted and sometimes segregated. UNIVERSAL DESIGN goes further: it designs for ALL people from the START, so one design works for everyone WITHOUT a special version or adaptation — the goal. INCLUSIVE DESIGN is the PROCESS to reach it: designing WITH the full diversity of people in mind, testing with real users, refining. In short: barrier-free is the floor, universal design is the goal, inclusive design is the method. A designer aims past mere compliance (barrier-free) toward a space that genuinely works for all (universal), reached by a human-centred process (inclusive). Knowing the difference keeps a designer aiming high, not just passing a checklist.[1, 4]

The seven principles (Mace, 1997) — equitable, flexible, simple, perceptible, tolerant, low-effort, size/space — are the checklist of ‘design for all’. And the inclusive design process is human-centred and iterative: understand real users, design, test with them, refine — design with people, not just for them.[1, 4]

The framework of universal design

Universal design has SEVEN PRINCIPLES (Ronald Mace and colleagues, NC State, 1997), the working checklist for 'design for all'. EQUITABLE USE: usable by all, ideally the same way, with dignity. FLEXIBILITY in use: adapts to different abilities and preferences. SIMPLE and INTUITIVE: easy to understand regardless of experience. PERCEPTIBLE information: communicated in more than one way (visual, audible, tactile). TOLERANCE for error: safe when mistakes happen. LOW physical effort: usable with little strength or fatigue. SIZE and SPACE for approach and use: room to reach and use whatever your body. These seven turn 'inclusion' from a slogan into a concrete practice: run any design against them and its real usability for everyone becomes clear. They are the intellectual heart of this course.[1]

The curb-cut effect

‘Accessibility is an ugly, costly compromise’ is a myth. The curb-cut effect: a dropped kerb built for wheelchairs helps everyone (prams, luggage, trolleys). Design for the edges and you improve the centre — and built in from the start, universal design is elegant and cheap. Inclusion is good design.[1]

Access is better design, for all

'Accessibility is an ugly, costly compromise on good design' is a MYTH, and the CURB-CUT EFFECT is the proof. The dropped kerb (curb cut) was built so WHEELCHAIR users could cross a road — but it turned out to help everyone: parents with prams, travellers with suitcases, delivery trolleys, cyclists, anyone. A feature designed for disabled people benefited a FAR larger group. This is the pattern of good universal design: designing for the EDGES improves the CENTRE. Captions help everyone in a noisy room; good contrast and lighting help every eye; a clear layout helps every mind; a lever handle helps full hands. So universal design is not a cost grudgingly paid for a few, but a BETTER design for all — and, built in from the START, it is elegant, invisible and cheap; only RETROFITTING is expensive. Inclusion is not a compromise on good design. It IS good design.[1]

Study task

Take one everyday design — a door handle, an entrance, a bathroom — and run it against the seven principles of universal design: is it equitable, flexible, simple and intuitive, perceptible (in more than one way), tolerant of error, low-effort, and does it give size and space for approach and use? Note where it passes and fails. Then redesign it to be universal — working for all from the start, not a special version. Now find one real example of the curb-cut effect in your own life: an accessibility feature (a ramp, a caption, a lever handle) that helped you even though you may not have needed it. Finally, explain in a sentence why building inclusion in from the start is cheaper and better than retrofitting it. The goal is to see universal design as simply better design.
