SketchUp Extensions

Curviloft, Bézier Spline, Shape Bender, Make Face — and organic form

SketchUp is deliberately a lean core; extensions add the geometry and workflow tools it lacks. This unit maps the ecosystem honestly — what the named plugins actually do (Curviloft lofts a skin, Shape Bender bends along a path, Make Face fills edges), why you want a few well-chosen ones rather than every plugin, and how organic form is really made in SketchUp, with its heavy, faceted limit that eventually sends you to Blender or Rhino.

Extensions come from the Extension Warehouse and SketchUcation, written against the Ruby API; licensing varies and drifts, so read the current listing. ‘You need every plugin’ is a myth — curation beats accumulation, and plugins remove friction, not supply judgement.[1]

A lean core, extended

SketchUp is deliberately a lean core; EXTENSIONS (plugins) add the geometry and workflow tools it lacks natively. They are written against SketchUp's Ruby API and distributed through Trimble's official Extension Warehouse and the community hub SketchUcation. Licensing varies by category — many are free, some are donationware, some are trial-then-paid, some paid — and it drifts over time (several once-free tools have moved to paid), so read the current listing rather than trust a fixed claim.[1]

Curviloft, Bézier Spline, Shape Bender, Make Face

The four tools

Each named extension has a real, specific job: Curviloft lofts a skin across curves, Bézier Spline draws editable spline curves, Shape Bender bends geometry along a path, and s4u Make Face builds faces from edges.[2, 3, 4]

Lofting and skinning (Fredo6)

Curviloft, by Fredo6, is a lofting and skinning toolset: it stretches a surface SKIN across a set of contour curves or along a path (Loft by Spline, Loft Along Path, Skin Contours). It is the standard answer for turning a cage of curves into a continuous — but still faceted — surface. It needs Fredo6's shared LibFredo6 library, and its licensing has drifted from free toward trial-then-paid.[2]

Follow Me, subdivision, and the limit

Making organic form

Rounded form is made natively with Follow Me and smoothly with subdivision (Artisan, SUbD) — but the output is a dense polygon mesh, not NURBS, and it gets heavy fast. Past a point, Blender or Rhino is the honest tool.[2, 5]

The native sweep and lathe

The native workhorse for rounded form is FOLLOW ME: take a 2D profile face and a path (or a face to revolve around) and it extrudes the profile along the path — lathe-turned columns, mouldings, domes, pipes. The result is still faceted (its smoothness inherits the profile/path segment count), but it is how most native curved geometry is really made.[1]

Pick one curved or organic element you cannot easily model with native tools — a curved slatted screen, a lofted canopy, a wrapped signage band — and decide which of the four named extensions (Curviloft, Bézier Spline, Shape Bender, s4u Make Face) would actually make it, and why. For each, note its author and its licensing CATEGORY (not a price), and check the current Extension Warehouse or SketchUcation listing to confirm. Then say at what point of complexity you would stop fighting SketchUp’s kernel and move the job to Blender or Rhino. Choosing a few tools well, and knowing their limit, is what this unit is teaching — not collecting every plugin.
