What SketchUp really is, and what 'parametric' actually means

The digital pipeline begins with an honest look at the tool most interior students use every day. SketchUp is a polygon (mesh) modeller — its ‘circle’ is really a 24-sided polygon and its curves are faceted chords smoothed only for display, so it is not a NURBS modeller like Rhino. This unit sets that straight, defines what parametric design actually is (rule-driven geometry, not the computer designing for you), and states the rule that governs the whole course: the software is a tool, not the design — and we never quote a price.

Not NURBS, not true curves

SketchUp is a polygon modeller

SketchUp is built from edges and flat faces only, so a ‘circle’ is a many-sided polygon and smoothing merely hides the facets. Segment count trades smoothness against file weight — ‘just add more sides’ is a cost, not a free lunch.[1, 2]

There is no true curve in SketchUp

SketchUp's entire geometry is built from two primitives only: EDGES (straight segments) and FACES (flat polygons). There is no third. So a 'circle' is really a 24-sided polygon (by default), an 'arc' is a chain of short chords, and a 'sphere' is a faceted mesh. SketchUp is a polygon SURFACE modeller — not a NURBS modeller like Rhino, and not native BIM like Revit.[1, 2]

Rules and constraints, not AI

Parametric design

Parametric means geometry driven by rules, so changing an input updates the model — but native SketchUp is direct modelling, not parametric. And it is neither the computer designing for you nor a synonym for blobby shapes.[3]

Geometry driven by rules

Parametric design means geometry driven by PARAMETERS, rules and constraints, so that changing an input value automatically updates the result: 'these 40 louvres are always evenly spaced across whatever width the facade is'. The design becomes a recipe of relationships, not a fixed set of pushed-and-pulled shapes. The canonical parametric environments are Grasshopper (in Rhino) and Dynamo (for Revit).[3]

The idea is human

The rule that governs this whole course: software is a TOOL, not a designer. SketchUp, Rhino, Blender and every plugin move geometry at the designer's command. Reading a brief, proportioning a room, choosing light and material, serving the people who will use the space — all of that is human. A master with a pencil beats a novice with every plugin installed.[4]

Polygon (mesh) modeller

A modeller whose geometry is edges and flat faces only (SketchUp). Curves are approximated by many small facets, not stored as true curves.

NURBS

Non-Uniform Rational B-Spline — a curve/surface stored as a mathematical equation (Rhino), exact at any zoom, the opposite of SketchUp's faceted mesh.

Direct (explicit) modelling

Modelling where the geometry you push and pull IS the model, with no history or dependencies — SketchUp's paradigm.

Parametric design

Apply it

Study task

Model one small curved element in SketchUp — an arched opening, a rounded column, a curved reception desk — twice: once with a low segment count and once with a high one. Compare how each looks at its silhouette and what it does to the file size and orbit speed, and write one sentence on the trade-off you would choose and why. Then, in your own words, define ‘parametric’ correctly and give one orthogonal (non-blobby) example. Finally, list three tools you would actually use across the pipeline and write each one’s licensing CATEGORY (free / open-source / free-tier / paid) — not a price. Learning to see the tool honestly, trade-offs and all, is the whole habit this course is building.
