The hook

A restaurant can have perfect food, perfect light and perfect service, and a guest will still leave unhappy for one reason: they could not hear the person across the table.

Ask people what ruins a restaurant for them and, survey after survey, the same answer comes back ahead of the food, the service or the prices: it was too loud. Not the music - the room itself, a hard, echoing roar in which every conversation has to be shouted, every voice adds to the din, and by the end of the meal the guests are tired, hoarse and subtly stressed without quite knowing why. Sound is the sense hospitality most often gets wrong, and the one guests most reliably complain about - and yet it is frequently the last thing anyone designs.

That is strange, because sound is enormously powerful in shaping how a space feels. The right sound makes a bar feel alive and a spa feel healing; the wrong sound makes a restaurant exhausting and a hotel room sleepless. And crucially, the goal is almost never silence - a dead-silent bar feels as wrong as a deafening one. The goal is the *right* sound for each space: a warm buzz here, a calm hush there, privacy where it matters, a soundscape that supports the mood. This lesson is about designing that - reading what each space needs, controlling noise, shaping music and soundscape, and protecting privacy - while deferring the binding reverberation and sound-isolation targets to an acoustic consultant.

Buzz versus quiet: every space wants a different sound

The first idea to unlearn is that good acoustics means quiet. In hospitality, different spaces want completely different sound levels, and matching each space to its right level is the whole game. A spa, a library bar, a fine-dining room or a luxury bedroom wants calm and quiet - low sound, soft surfaces, a sense of hush that signals refuge and lets people relax or sleep. But a lively bistro, a cafe, a cocktail bar or a nightclub wants the opposite: a warm, energetic buzz that signals life, popularity and occasion. Put a couple into a dead-silent restaurant and they will whisper, feel watched, and leave early; put them into the same restaurant with a pleasant hum of conversation and gentle music and they relax, because the background energy gives their own conversation cover and tells them the place is alive.

This is the paradox at the heart of hospitality acoustics: a certain amount of sound is not a problem to eliminate but an ingredient to design. A good buzz does real work. It provides acoustic privacy - when there is a pleasant background level, nearby tables cannot clearly hear each other, so everyone feels freer to talk. It signals success - a silent restaurant feels like a failing one, while a warm hum feels popular and convivial. And it sets energy - the brisk buzz of a breakfast cafe and the low murmur of a late-night bar are part of their respective moods. So the designer's task is not to drive sound to zero but to decide, for each space, where on the scale from hush to buzz it should sit, and then to shape the room so it lands there and stays there.

The failure modes are at both ends. Too loud - the common one - and conversation becomes impossible and the experience turns stressful and tiring; this is the top restaurant complaint and it is almost always a design failure of hard, unabsorbent surfaces. Too dead - rarer but real - and a room feels lifeless, clinical and awkward, every clink and cough exposed. The craft is to tune each space to its intended buzz-or-hush, and, in a big mixed venue, to manage the transitions so a guest feels the energy shift as they move from the hushed restaurant to the buzzing bar. Where exactly that target sits, and how it is measured, is refined with an acoustic consultant; the judgement of what each space should *feel* like is the designer's.

A good buzz is an ingredient, not a fault. The goal is the right sound - not silence everywhere.

Controlling noise: absorb, block, cover

When a hospitality space is too loud, it is almost always because it is full of hard, sound-reflecting surfaces with nothing to soak up the sound. The fashionable modern restaurant - concrete floor, bare plaster or brick walls, big glass, hard ceiling, timber or metal tables, no curtains, no carpet - is acoustically a disaster, however beautiful it looks, because sound bounces endlessly around it, building into that exhausting roar. Fixing it is not mysterious; there is a simple, practical toolkit that every hospitality designer should carry, often remembered as the ABC of acoustics: Absorb, Block and Cover.

Absorb deals with sound *within* a room - the reverberation, the echo, the build-up. You tame it by introducing soft, porous surfaces that soak sound up instead of bouncing it: carpet or rugs, upholstered seating and banquettes, fabric curtains and blinds, acoustic ceiling tiles or rafts, wall panels, even planting and books. The more a room must be quiet or control a crowd, the more absorption it needs - and the great trick of hospitality acoustics is to deliver that absorption *through the decor*, so the curtains, rugs, tufted banquettes and soft ceiling are doing acoustic work while looking like design. Block deals with sound passing *between* rooms or from outside - noise transmission. You stop it with mass and separation: heavy walls and floors, proper seals around doors, gaps and breaks in the structure, and attention to the sneaky paths sound takes (through a shared ceiling void, a gap under a door, a duct, a party wall). This is what keeps a bedroom quiet from the corridor, the lift and the room next door, and a private dining room private. Cover (or masking) deals with the sound that remains: a designed background layer - soft music, a water feature, a gentle hum - that masks residual noise and fills the awkward dead silence, so a slightly-too-quiet space feels comfortable and a conversation cannot be overheard.

Most good hospitality acoustics uses all three together: absorption to control the room, blocking to protect privacy and sleep, and a covering soundscape to set the final feel. What the designer contributes is the *integration* - weaving the absorption invisibly into the materials and the decor, planning the plan so noisy and quiet uses are blocked apart, and designing the soundscape. The *quantities* - how much absorption, what reverberation time, what sound-insulation rating a wall or floor must achieve - are the acoustic consultant's to calculate and specify, especially anywhere sleep, privacy or a noise-sensitive neighbour is involved. Note too that colour and paint do nothing acoustically; only real, physical absorption, mass and masking change how a room sounds.

Music and soundscape: the sound you choose to add

Beyond controlling unwanted noise, hospitality deliberately adds sound - and music and soundscape are as much a part of the brand and mood as light or material. The music in a space is not background wallpaper; it sets energy, signals identity and shapes behaviour. Tempo, volume and genre change how fast people eat and drink, how long they linger, how loudly they talk and how the place feels - brisk, upbeat music in a fast casual cafe keeps energy high and turnover quick, while slow, low music in a fine-dining room or a lounge relaxes people and encourages them to stay and order another drink. The best operators curate this carefully, with playlists that shift through the day in step with the lighting scenes - gentler in the morning, building through the evening - so music and light choreograph the mood together.

Soundscape is broader than music. It includes the deliberate sounds that signal the brand and the place: the hiss and clatter of an open kitchen that tells you food is being cooked with energy, the shake of a cocktail, the crackle of a fire, the sound of water in a spa or a courtyard fountain, birdsong and breeze in a resort garden, even the considered *quiet* of a temple-like wellness space. In India especially, the sound of water, the hush of a heritage courtyard, or soft live classical music can be a powerful, culturally resonant part of the experience. These sounds are designed, positioned and sometimes masked or amplified on purpose - a water feature, for instance, does double duty as a lovely soundscape and as acoustic *cover* that masks conversation and traffic noise.

Delivering this well is a craft in itself. The sound system must be designed so music is even across a space (not blasting by the speaker and inaudible in the corner), zoned so different areas can have different levels and playlists, and controllable by staff as easily as the lighting scenes. Volume discipline matters enormously: the single most common music failure in hospitality is simply *too loud*, turned up over the course of a shift until it fights the guests rather than supporting them. And as with everything in this module, the designer sets the intent - the genre, the energy, the zones, the soundscape - while the specifics of the audio system and any licensing for played music are handled with an audiovisual specialist and the relevant rights. Designed sound, used with restraint, is one of the most underrated tools for making a place feel unmistakably itself.

Privacy, sleep and the quiet that guests pay for

If there is one place where acoustics becomes non-negotiable, it is the guest bedroom, because a hotel is, at its core, selling a good night's sleep, and noise is the fastest way to destroy it and earn a furious review. A guest woken by the couple next door, the lift machinery, a banging door down the corridor, the plant room, traffic, or a thumping bar two floors below has been sold a defective product, however beautiful the room. So acoustic privacy and quiet in and around bedrooms are a core design responsibility, not a refinement - and they are won mostly through planning and construction, early, not through decor added late.

The moves are largely about blocking and separation. Party walls and floors between rooms need real mass and proper detailing so neither voices nor footsteps nor plumbing carry through. Doors - always the weak link - need seals and often a lobby or a stagger so corridor noise and light do not leak in. Bathrooms, lifts, ice machines, plant and service risers should be planned away from the head of the bed, ideally with bathrooms or wardrobes acting as acoustic buffers between one room's living space and the next. Glazing and facade build-up must handle external noise, which in a busy Indian city or beside a wedding-banquet lawn can be considerable. And noisy uses - bars, clubs, kitchens, banquet halls, pools, plant - must be zoned and isolated away from sleeping areas, which is a planning decision made at concept, because you cannot soundproof your way out of a nightclub placed directly below bedrooms.

Privacy matters in the public realm too, and it is often where luxury is *felt*: a private dining room where a business deal or a family celebration cannot be overheard; a spa treatment room where a guest feels unheard and unhurried; a reception or a concierge desk where a guest can share a problem discreetly; enough acoustic separation between restaurant tables that each party has its own conversational bubble. Delivering all this is a partnership: the designer plans the quiet and noisy zones and weaves in the absorption and buffering, while the acoustic consultant sets and verifies the binding performance - the sound-insulation ratings of walls, floors and doors, the reverberation targets, the isolation of plant and entertainment - and the structural and services engineers build it in. It is unglamorous, invisible when it works, and utterly central to whether a guest sleeps, relaxes and returns. Quiet, in hospitality, is a product you design and sell.

The single biggest acoustic decision is zoning: keep the noisy uses - bars, clubs, kitchens, banquet halls, pools, lifts, plant - away from and isolated from the quiet ones, above all the bedrooms, because no amount of later treatment rescues a nightclub placed under a guest floor. Then comes construction: the mass and build-up of party walls and floors between rooms, floor-to-floors deep enough for acoustic separation and isolated services, facade and glazing performance against outside noise, and structural breaks that stop sound and vibration travelling. Plan bathrooms, wardrobes and corridors as acoustic buffers. Start listening to spaces as deliberately as you look at them. In every cafe, restaurant and hotel, notice: is it too loud to talk, pleasantly buzzy, or awkwardly silent - and why?
