The colour you pick is only half the decision - the finish, from dead matt to full gloss, changes how deep that colour reads, how well it cleans, and how much it forgives.

The hook

Two walls, one colour code, and they still do not match - because nobody agreed on the sheen.

A client approves a deep teal off the fan deck. The painter mixes it exactly to code and rolls it on. On site it looks dusty, a shade too pale, faintly disappointing - and the client is sure the wrong tin was used. Nobody is lying and nothing was mis-tinted. The chip was printed at a satin sheen; the wall was painted in dead matt, which scatters diffuse light back and washes the colour out. Same code, different finish, different colour.

This is the quiet truth of specifying real paint: the colour code is only half the instruction. The other half is the system it lives in and the sheen it is built at - and getting those wrong turns a perfect colour choice into a site dispute. This lesson is about the whole tin, not just the swatch: what paint actually is, how the matt-to-gloss ladder works, and why finish changes the colour you see.

Paint is a system, not a colour

When you name a paint colour you are, whether you realise it or not, specifying a whole system. A paint is a binder (the film that sticks and hardens), pigments (the colour and the opacity), a carrier (water in an emulsion, solvent in an oil enamel) and a handful of additives - and the colour you finally live with is the product of all of it, not the little swatch on its own. Two tins mixed to the same colour code can look and behave like different colours once they are on the wall, because their binders build different films with different sheen, different depth and different ways of holding dirt.

It helps to know the family tree. Distemper is the cheap, breathable, chalky interior paint of countless Indian homes - soft, matt, easily marked, and it powders off on your hand. Acrylic emulsions (what most people now mean by wall paint) are water-based, washable, low-odour and come in a full sheen range; they are the workhorse of interiors. Exterior emulsions add ultraviolet resistance, flexibility and fungal protection to survive sun and monsoon. Enamels - alkyd or oil-based - cure to a hard, glossy, wipeable film and are the traditional choice for joinery, grilles and metal, though they yellow with age and are slow-drying. Cement paint is a cheap powder-based exterior coat that chalks. Epoxy and PU coatings are the tough, chemical-resistant finishes for floors, laboratories and high-wear surfaces.

Why does this matter to colour? Because each system carries colour differently. A deep, saturated red is hard to achieve in a chalky distemper and easy in a resin-rich enamel. A cheap emulsion with a low pigment load and high filler will look thinner and greyer than a premium one at the same colour code. The substrate matters too: the same paint over raw plaster, over a primer, or over an old dark colour reads differently until enough coats build the true film. Specify the system first, then the colour - not the other way round.

The sheen ladder: matt to gloss

Sheen - the amount a surface reflects light in a mirror-like way - is the second half of every paint decision, and it is at least as important as the colour. Manufacturers name a ladder of sheen levels, and though the exact names vary by brand, the order is universal: matt (or flat), eggshell, satin (or silk), semi-gloss, and gloss, from almost no reflection to a near-mirror. The number that describes it is gloss units, measured at a fixed angle; matt might sit at a few units, gloss at seventy or ninety and above.

Walk the ladder and two things change together. First, reflectance: a matt surface scatters light in every direction (diffuse reflection), so it looks even and soft from any angle; a gloss surface bounces the light source straight back (specular reflection), so it carries a bright highlight and looks wet or hard. Second, and this is the practical crux, durability and cleanability climb as you go up the ladder. The higher the sheen, the denser and harder the film, the better it resists scrubbing, moisture and greasy fingerprints. Matt marks and burnishes (rubs shiny) where it is touched; gloss wipes clean.

But sheen has a cost that runs the opposite way: the higher the sheen, the more mercilessly it shows every flaw in the surface beneath. Gloss on a wavy, poorly finished wall turns every ripple and trowel mark into a catch of light. Matt forgives an imperfect substrate; gloss demands a perfect one. This is why big wall areas are almost always matt or eggshell (they look calm and hide the inevitable unevenness of plaster) while trim, doors, kitchens and bathrooms go satin to gloss (they take knocks and need washing, and the smaller, better-prepared surfaces can carry the shine).

So every sheen choice is a negotiation between three things at once: how you want the colour to read, how much wear and cleaning the surface will take, and how good the substrate underneath actually is.

How sheen changes the colour you see

Here is the part that surprises people: change only the sheen and the colour itself appears to change, though the pigment is identical. A higher-sheen finish generally makes a colour look deeper, richer and more saturated; a matt finish makes the same colour look lighter, softer and slightly chalkier. The reason goes back to the very first lesson of this course - colour is the light a surface returns to your eye. A matt surface scatters light in all directions, so a good deal of white, diffuse light mixes back into what you see, lifting the value and washing out the chroma. A glossy surface sends the bulk of the light off as a specular highlight in one direction; away from that highlight the film returns the pigment's colour with far less white mixed in, so it reads darker and more intense.

This has real consequences on site. Paint a dark navy or a deep forest green in matt and it can look dusty and a shade too pale; the same colour in eggshell or satin snaps into the rich, saturated version the client fell for on the fan deck - because fan-deck chips are often printed at a sheen that flatters. A near-black in full matt reads as a soft charcoal; in gloss it reads as a true, hard black. Reds and teals in particular gain drama with sheen and can look muddy in dead matt.

Sheen also changes colour across a day. Because gloss carries the reflection of whatever is around it - the sky, a window, a lamp - a glossy wall picks up the colour of its surroundings and its highlight moves as you move. A glossy ceiling can look like the sky it reflects. Matt stays put: the same colour from every angle, every hour. If you want a colour to sit still and behave, go matter; if you want it to come alive and shift, go glossier - but know that you are then designing a moving target, not a fixed one.

Choosing sheen room by room, surface by surface

Put it together and a working rule of thumb emerges - not a law, but a sound default you vary with intent. Ceilings: flat matt, almost always. A ceiling has no wear, catches raking light from windows, and any sheen there advertises every imperfection; ultra-matt also hides the joints. Living and bedroom walls: matt or a low eggshell - calm, forgiving, easy to touch up. Kitchens, bathrooms, laundries: satin or semi-gloss on walls, because steam, splashes and grease demand a washable, moisture-resistant film. Trim, doors, skirtings, window frames, railings: satin to gloss - they take knocks and fingerprints, they are small and well-prepared enough to carry shine, and the contrast in sheen against matt walls quietly frames the room. High-traffic corridors, schools, hospitals, stairwells: scrubbable satin or a specialist wipe-clean matt, chosen for cleaning regimes rather than looks. Exteriors: a low-sheen exterior emulsion resists dirt pickup while avoiding the glare and flaw-showing of gloss in harsh sun.

A few honest cautions. Modern manufacturers now sell washable matts that close much of the old gap between hiding flaws and wiping clean - worth specifying where you want a flat look on a wall that will get handled. Never mix sheens within one visual plane by accident: a touch-up in a different sheen shows as a patch even in a perfectly matched colour, because the eye reads the change in reflection instantly. And remember that sheen interacts with light and with the value shift above - a dark colour in gloss in a bright room can become an unusable mirror of the window opposite.

The discipline is simple: decide the colour and the sheen together, always, and test them together at real size under real light. A colour chosen at one sheen and built at another is a colour you did not actually choose.

On a facade, sheen is a durability and glare decision before it is an aesthetic one. A low-sheen exterior emulsion sheds dirt and hides the unevenness of masonry, while high gloss in strong Indian sun becomes a hot, distracting mirror that magnifies every substrate ripple across a whole elevation. Specify sheen by exposure and cleaning access, not by the showroom look, and remember weathering flattens gloss unevenly over years.

Sheen is one of your quietest, most powerful controls - use it deliberately, room by room. The same colour goes richer in eggshell and softer in matt, so you can tune saturation without changing the code. Pair matt walls with satin trim to frame a room; push kitchens and baths to washable satin; keep ceilings dead flat. Always confirm colour and sheen together on a sample - a fan-deck chip lies about both.

Train your eye: notice how a glossy wall carries the window and shifts as you walk, while matt sits still.
