Colour in Natural Materials

Stone, timber, brick, terracotta, metal and concrete come with their colour already made by geology, biology and time - so you curate a living range, not pick a swatch.

The hook

You do not paint a granite counter or a teak door - you choose a colour that nature made, that the finish transforms, and that time will keep changing.

A designer specifies a warm honey teak screen for a courtyard, approves a small oiled sample indoors, and signs off. Two monsoons later the screen is a soft silver-grey. No one did anything wrong - unfinished timber outdoors silvers under ultraviolet, and that is simply what teak does. The colour was never fixed; it was a starting point on a journey the climate was always going to finish.

Natural materials play by different rules from paint. Their colour is inherited, not chosen; it varies from piece to piece; the finish transforms it; and much of it is meant to age. That makes material colour richer and more alive than any flat pigment - and less controllable. This lesson teaches you to read the palettes of stone, timber, brick, metal and concrete, to specify the finish that is half the colour, and to decide, on purpose, whether to hold the ageing back or design for it.

Colour you select, not colour you apply

Paint gives you almost any colour on demand; natural materials give you the colour they already have, and your job shifts from choosing a pigment to selecting, revealing and sometimes accepting a colour you did not fully control. A block of Makrana marble, a plank of teak, a handmade brick and a sheet of weathering steel each arrive with their colour built in by geology or biology - and with a range, not a single value, because nature does not tint to a code. Working with material colour is therefore a different discipline from working with paint: less picking, more curating.

Three honest facts shape everything here. First, natural materials vary - block to block, tree to tree, batch to batch. Two slabs cut from the same quarry can differ in ground colour and veining; two firings of brick can shift from salmon to plum. This variation is the material being alive, and fighting it usually looks worse than embracing it. Second, the finish changes the colour just as sheen does with paint: polished granite is darker and more saturated than the same granite honed or flamed; oiled teak is warm and deep, while the same teak sanded and left raw is pale and dull. Third, material colour ages - and unlike paint, it is often meant to. Copper goes green, steel can be left to rust to a stable skin, timber silvers, concrete streaks and darkens.

So the designer of material colour works with samples and ranges rather than codes, specifies the finish as carefully as the material, and decides deliberately whether to arrest ageing or to let it happen. The reward is a depth and life that flat paint rarely matches; the risk is a colour that drifts from what you imagined if you do not control the batch, the finish and the weathering.

Reading the palette of stone, timber, brick and metal

Learn the palettes material by material - it becomes second nature.

Stone is a spectrum in itself. India alone offers Makrana and other white-to-cream marbles; the honey-gold sandstone of Jaisalmer; the deep red sandstone of Agra and Dholpur that built Mughal Delhi; the grey-green of Kota; near-black granites; and the warm buffs and greys of countless local limestones. Stone colour comes with pattern - veining, bedding, fossils - and with a value that the finish swings hard: a black granite reads glossy-black polished, mid-grey honed, and pale grey flamed. Never judge stone from a small dry sample; wet it (which previews the polished look) and view a large piece.

Timber ranges from the pale straw of maple and bamboo, through the honey and biscuit of teak, oak and sal, to the chocolate and near-purple of rosewood and walnut. Grain is part of the colour, and every board differs; the finish is decisive - a clear matt lacquer keeps timber close to its raw tone, while oil or a warm varnish deepens and yellows it markedly. Timber also darkens or, outdoors, silvers over time.

Brick and terracotta run from pale buff and yellow through salmon, orange and red to plum and near-black, set by clay chemistry and firing temperature. Handmade and wire-cut bricks carry colour variation across a wall that machine bricks lack - often the whole point. Regional earths give regional colour: the deep rust-red of laterite in Kerala and the Konkan, the warm ochres of rammed earth. Metals bring their own colours: the warm brown of new copper, the gold of brass, the cool grey of zinc and anodised aluminium, the orange-brown of weathering (Corten) steel. Concrete is not simply grey - it ranges from near-white with white cement and pale aggregate to warm buff or charcoal, and fair-faced concrete carries the colour and texture of its formwork; terrazzo and cast stone go further, embedding chips of coloured marble and aggregate that read as one composite colour from a distance and as a speckle up close.

One more layer runs through all of them: texture changes the colour as surely as finish does. A rough, split-face stone reads darker and more matt than the same stone sawn smooth, because the broken surface traps light and casts micro-shadows; a deeply grained timber reads more varied than a close-grained one. So when you record a material colour, record its texture and finish with it - they are inseparable from the hue you see.

Across all of them, the rule from Lesson 0.1 holds doubled: colour is finish plus texture plus light plus neighbour, and with natural materials the finish is half the colour.

Ageing, weathering and patina

Paint tries to hold its colour; many natural materials are expected to change theirs, and good design treats that change as part of the palette rather than a defect. Copper begins a bright salmon-brown, dulls to chocolate, and over years develops the pale green carbonate patina seen on old domes - a colour you cannot buy in a tin and cannot rush. Weathering steel (Corten) is designed to rust: its surface oxidises to a deep orange-brown skin that then stabilises and protects the steel beneath, which is why it is left uncoated - but it stains whatever it runs onto, so detailing must manage the runoff. Zinc and lead develop soft grey-blue patinas.

Timber outdoors, left unfinished, loses its warm tone to ultraviolet and weather and turns a silver-grey - beautiful and low-maintenance if you want it, a disappointment if you expected the honey colour to last. Keeping timber its original colour outdoors means committing to regular re-oiling or coating; letting it silver means accepting an uneven start as it transitions. Concrete and render darken, and streak where water runs - below sills, off copings, down un-drained faces - so the ageing colour of a concrete building is written by its rainwater detailing as much as its mix. Stone and brick are the slowest and most stable, though limestone and marble soil and can grow biological film in damp, shaded, polluted spots.

The design decision is explicit: for each material, do you arrest the ageing (coatings, sealers, maintenance) or design for it (choose the aged colour as the real colour and detail so it weathers evenly)? Either is valid; pretending ageing will not happen is what produces the grim, patchy buildings of five years on.

Designing with material colour

Turning this into practice comes down to control, honesty and pairing.

Control the batch. Because natural materials vary, specify and approve from large samples, and for stone insist on viewing the actual slabs or a full crate, not a 100mm tile. For a big area, ask for material from one block or one firing where possible, and have it dry-laid and blended on site so variation is distributed, not clustered into a patch. Write the finish into the spec as tightly as the material - honed or polished, oiled or matt-lacquered, flamed or sawn - because the finish is half the colour.

Be honest about what you can hold. If a client wants copper to stay bright or teak to stay honey outdoors, tell them the truth about maintenance before it is built, and put the aged colour in front of them as the likely reality. It is far cheaper to align expectations with a weathered sample now than to argue about patina later.

Pair material colour with paint and with itself deliberately. Natural material colours are usually complex, slightly muted and warm, which is exactly why paint chosen to sit beside them should often be pulled off the pure and toward the material - matching the undertone (Module 4) rather than clashing a clean pigment against a nuanced stone. Sample the paint against the actual material, under the actual light, at size. And respect region: a palette drawn from local stone, timber and earth (Module 6) tends to sit right because the light it will be seen in is the light that made those colours read well in the first place.

Material colour rewards restraint - let two or three good materials carry the scheme and keep the applied colour supporting, not competing.

You will build the start of a real materials library and learn to see the range and the finish inside a material. No software - just offcuts, water and light.

  1. 1Collect five or six real offcuts - a stone or tile, a piece of timber, a brick, a metal sample, a lump of concrete or render. Lay them out in daylight.
  2. 2For each, name its colour in hue, value and chroma (the Lesson 0.1 habit). Note that most are complex, slightly muted and warm - not clean pigments.
  3. 3Wet the stone and unfinished timber with a little water. Watch the colour deepen and saturate - this previews the polished or oiled finish. Record the before and after.
  4. 4Find the same materials aged somewhere near you - weathered copper, rusted steel, silvered timber, streaked concrete - and photograph the aged colour beside your fresh sample.
  5. 5Label each offcut with material, finish and where you saw it weather, and write one paint colour that would sit well beside it, matched to its undertone.

Material colour is your longest-lived colour decision - and much of it is written by weathering and detailing, not selection. Choose stone, brick and metal for how they will look aged and soiled in your climate, not just fresh from the quarry. Design the rainwater path, because streaking writes the real colour of a concrete or rendered facade. Where you use Corten or copper, detail the runoff and set client expectations about patina in writing.
