Heritage & Regional Colour
Jaipur pink, Jodhpur blue, Chettinad oxide-red, Goa's ochres, Santorini white - regional palettes are never arbitrary. They are climate, geology, economy and belief crystallised into colour, and they still have plenty to teach.
Nobody chose Jodhpur's blue or Jaipur's pink from a fandeck. Those colours are what climate, local material, trade and belief left behind when they settled.
Look at any place with a strong colour identity - the pink of Jaipur, the blue of Jodhpur, the oxide reds of Chettinad, the ochres and indigos of Goa, the white-and-blue of Santorini - and you are looking at the opposite of a mood board. These palettes were not selected for their look; they accumulated for concrete reasons - what material was to hand, what the climate demanded, what people could afford, and what they believed. The look is the by-product.
That is why regional colour is such a rich teacher. Each palette is a solved problem: a local answer to local light, heat, materials and meaning, refined over generations. Learning to read those reasons - not just copy the colours - is one of the most useful things a colour designer can do. This lesson decodes why vernacular palettes exist, tours India's and the world's, and asks how to honour them without slipping into theme-park pastiche.

Why vernacular colour exists - it is never arbitrary
Before paint came in tins from a factory, colour came from the ground, and that single fact shaped almost every traditional palette on earth. Vernacular colour is what you get when material, climate, economy and belief have to be answered all at once, locally. Four forces do the work.
Material and geology. People built and coloured with what was cheap and near: the local stone, the local earth, the pigments that could be dug, burnt or traded nearby. Iron-rich earths gave ochres, reds and browns everywhere they occurred; lime gave the world its whites; a local clay or a mine by-product could define a whole region's colour. The palette was, quite literally, the local ground.
Climate. Colour did physical work. Lime whitewash reflects fierce sun and keeps interiors cooler, and it is mildly antibacterial and fungicidal - reason enough for whitewashed hot-climate towns worldwide. Certain washes were believed, sometimes rightly, to repel insects. Colours that faded fast under a harsh sun simply did not survive in the tradition; lightfast earths did.
Economy and trade. Bright, stable pigments were often expensive and imported, so vivid colour signalled wealth and status, while cheap local earths and limes clothed ordinary buildings. When a pigment became a cheap by-product of some industry, it could suddenly colour a whole region.
Culture and belief. Religion, caste, community and custom assigned meaning to colours and reserved some for temples, some for homes, some for particular groups. Colour marked identity as much as it decorated.
Read any regional palette through those four lenses and it stops being quaint and becomes intelligible - a rational, beautiful answer to a real set of constraints.
It is worth noticing how recent cheap, stable, factory colour actually is. For most of history a builder could not simply choose any colour they fancied; the palette was handed to them by geography and budget, and that constraint is precisely what gave regions their coherence. Today we can buy almost any hue anywhere for the same low price, which is at once a freedom and a trap. The discipline that geology and economy once imposed for free, a designer now has to supply on purpose. Understanding where the old palettes came from is how you rebuild that discipline by choice rather than by scarcity.

India's regional palettes and their reasons
India's regional colours are among the most vivid case studies anywhere. Take four.
Jaipur - the Pink City. The old walled city's terracotta-pink is famous, but it is recent and deliberate as a rule: the city was painted pink in the mid-1870s to welcome the Prince of Wales (pink read as a colour of hospitality), and the look was later fixed by municipal byelaw, so the pink persists by regulation as much as tradition. The wash itself sits comfortably in the desert light and the local earthy palette. It is a lovely example of colour as civic identity, maintained on purpose.
Jodhpur - the Blue City. Clusters of houses in the old city are washed in a soft indigo-blue. The reasons are debated and worth stating honestly: the blue is traditionally linked with Brahmin households, and it is also said to help keep interiors cool and to deter insects (indigo and lime washes have some such reputation). How much is thermal fact and how much is custom is genuinely uncertain - but the striking, coherent blue is real, and it demonstrates a community palette that turned a whole quarter into one composition.
Chettinad. The merchant mansions of Tamil Nadu's Chettinad show a rich, warm palette: lustrous lime-plaster walls polished to a sheen, deep oxide reds and ochres, teak and satinwood, and the famous handmade Athangudi tiles in bold local patterns. The wealth of a trading community brought imported richness, but the base colours are local earths, lime and timber - luxury built on a vernacular ground.
Goa. The Indo-Portuguese houses carry ochre-yellows, deep reds, greens and indigos with crisp white trim to windows and mouldings - historically, pure white walls were often reserved for churches, so homes took the strong earthy colours instead. It is a hybrid palette: European taste answered with Indian pigments, lime and light.

Global vernacular - the same logic, different ground
The same four forces produced distinct palettes the world over, and touring a few sharpens the pattern.
Santorini and the Cyclades (Greece). Brilliant lime-white walls with blue domes and joinery. The white is lime wash - cheap, local, sun-reflecting, cooling and antibacterial - and the blue came from an inexpensive laundry-bluing pigment; a later national period cemented the blue-and-white as identity. Climate and cheap local material first, symbolism after.
Falu red (Sweden). The deep oxide-red of Swedish cottages comes from a red pigment that was a by-product of the Falun copper mine - cheap, abundant, and a paint that happens to protect and preserve timber. A whole nation's rural colour set by one mine's waste stream: economy and material, exactly.
Bath and the Cotswolds (England). Honey-gold towns built and coloured by the local limestone (Bath stone, Cotswold stone). No paint at all - the colour is the geology, which is why the buildings sit so naturally in their landscape.
Marrakech (Morocco). The Red City glows in earthy pink-ochre because it was built largely of local rammed earth (pisé) and clay, later reinforced by regulation. The colour is the ground it stands on.
Burano (Italy). The fishermen's houses are painted in vivid, saturated blocks of colour - by local account, so boats could pick out their own home through the lagoon fog. Function first, festival second.
Different grounds, different climates, different economies - but always the same underlying logic: colour that solved a local problem and then became a local identity.

Learning from vernacular without pastiche
It is tempting, once you love these palettes, to lift them wholesale - a Santorini restaurant in Bengaluru, a fake Chettinad villa far from Tamil Nadu. Resist it. Copy-pasting a vernacular look severed from its reasons is pastiche - a costume, not architecture - and it usually reads as thin the moment you know the original.
The better path is to extract the logic, not the literal colours. Ask why the palette exists and whether the same reasoning applies to your project. Is your climate similar - does a reflective lime-white or an earthy lightfast palette make thermal sense here? Is there a local material or geology whose colour you could honestly use, the way Bath or Marrakech did? Is there a cultural meaning you understand well enough to invoke without cliche? Where the answers are yes, a response rooted in the same forces will feel genuine even if it looks nothing like the source.
This is also how you keep a living tradition alive rather than embalming it. Jaipur's pink stays powerful because it is maintained as a real civic rule, not a tourist backdrop; Chettinad craft endures where the lime work and Athangudi tiles are still made, not merely imitated. Honour a vernacular palette by continuing its reasoning in today's materials and needs, and by supporting the local makers and materials it depends on - not by shrink-wrapping its surface onto an unrelated building. Do that, and the whole of this module comes together: colour on the facade, answering climate and context, taking its place in the streetscape, and drawing on the deep, rational wisdom of a place's own colours.
There is a quiet ethics to this as well. Vernacular palettes belong to communities, and some of their colours once carried meanings of caste, faith or status that are not yours to borrow lightly. Treating a living tradition as a free image bank - printing Athangudi patterns onto laminate, spraying heritage pink onto an unrelated block - can hollow out the very thing that made it worth admiring, and can quietly put the real craftspeople out of work. So honouring a palette also means crediting where it comes from, understanding what it meant, and, wherever you can, putting the work back into the hands that keep it alive.

Before borrowing a heritage colour, decode why it arose - the local geology, the thermal role of lime-white or earth pigments, the cultural reservations - and ask whether the same reasoning fits your site. Where you build in a place with a real palette, honour it in today's materials and support the local makers who keep it alive. Reject theme-park pastiche; aim for genuine continuity.
Regional palettes are a goldmine for interiors - if you take the reasoning, not just the postcard. A Chettinad-inspired scheme means lime-polished surfaces, oxide reds, teak and Athangudi tiles with their real depth and craft, not a printed motif. Understand the meanings before you deploy them - some colours carried caste, community or sacred associations - and prefer sourcing the actual local materials and makers. That turns a themed room into an authentic, defensible design with a story you can tell the client.

Then find the same forces in a place near you and see what palette they produced. This habit builds a designer who can respond to any context with rooted, intelligent colour, instead of one who only recycles the same famous swatches everywhere.
