Architecture Journalism & Photography

A building is experienced by a few but KNOWN by many — through the words and images that tell its story. This elective teaches the architect to TELL and SHOW architecture well. It covers architectural journalism — the craft of writing, reporting and criticism that explains buildings and cities to the public, and the ethics that go with it. It teaches photography from the ground up — the exposure triangle, composition and light — and the special discipline of architectural photography, where verticals must stay true and the light must flatter the form. It moves to advanced technique, post-production and finding a personal vision. And it ends with multimedia storytelling — weaving text, image, audio and video into a feature that does justice to a work of architecture.

Advanced Architectural Photography

Once the fundamentals are second nature, photography becomes an art. This unit covers ADVANCED COMPOSITION for architecture — beyond the rules, the deliberate use of perspective, reflection, abstraction, scale figures and the decisive moment of light. It covers the digital POST-PRODUCTION workflow — shooting RAW, correcting perspective and exposure, blending and (honestly) finishing an image — that turns a good capture into a finished photograph. And it covers the hardest, most rewarding goal: developing a PERSONAL STYLE and vision, the recognisable way of seeing that makes a photographer an artist, not just a recorder. Unit 1 — Introduction to Architecture Journalism & Photography

An overview of architectural journalism and photography; the historical and contemporary perspectives on architectural storytelling; and the ethical considerations and responsibilities that come with writing about and photographing buildings, people and places.

Unit 2 — Architectural Writing & Criticism

Live

The principles of journalistic writing and storytelling; techniques for researching, interviewing and reporting on architectural topics; crafting compelling narratives and features on architecture and urbanism; and an introduction to architectural criticism — the methods of analysis, interpretation and evaluation of buildings and urban spaces.

Unit 3 — Architectural Photography Basics

Live

The fundamentals of photography — exposure (the aperture-shutter-ISO triangle), composition and lighting; an introduction to architectural photography techniques and equipment (lenses, tripod, tilt-shift); and the field exercises that build the eye and the hand.

Live

Advanced composition techniques for architectural photography; the digital image-processing and post-production workflow (RAW, perspective correction, exposure blending); and the development of a personal style and vision.

Multimedia formats for architectural storytelling — audio, video and interactive media; the integration of text, images and multimedia into a single architectural feature; and the final project — a multimedia architectural feature or portfolio showcasing the skills of the course.
