A motorised curtain is, at its simplest, an ordinary curtain that a small electric motor opens and closes for you instead of your hand. Press a button, tap a phone, set a schedule or say a word, and the panels glide across on their own. That sounds like a luxury, and for a long time it was a villa-only one. In 2026 it is a sensible, affordable upgrade on the two or three windows you actually use every day — if you understand how the system works and plan the boring parts before the walls are painted.

How a motorised curtain actually works

There are only four parts, and once you can name them the whole category stops being mysterious:

  • The track — a slim aluminium channel, just like a manual track, but with a toothed belt or a threaded rod running inside it. The curtain carriers clip to that belt.
  • The motor — a compact tube or box, usually at one end of the track, that drives the belt and pulls the carriers along. This is what replaces your hand.
  • The controller / receiver — a tiny radio board inside or beside the motor that listens for commands from a remote, a wall switch, an app or a hub.
  • The power source — either mains cabling (wired) or a built-in rechargeable battery.

Press your remote and the controller tells the motor how far to run; the motor drives the belt; the belt drags the curtain open or shut and stops at the position it has learned. Good motors run a "limit-setting" routine once at installation — you teach it the fully-open and fully-closed points — and after that it lands cleanly every time. Most have a manual override too: a gentle tug on the leading panel wakes the motor and it finishes the movement, and a power cut still lets you pull the curtain by hand.

The honest summary: "wired vs wireless" is usually a false choice — nearly all modern motors are wireless in control (they take radio commands). The real fork is mains-powered vs battery-powered. A mains motor never runs flat and pulls heavy lined curtains without strain, but it needs a power point planned at the track during construction. A battery motor charges off a USB or a hidden point every two to six months and retrofits into any existing home with zero civil work — at the cost of remembering to charge it, and slightly less muscle on very heavy drapes.

A motorised curtain can be controlled in four overlapping ways, and a good setup uses several:

  • Handheld remote — the simplest, works the day it is installed, needs no internet. Many remotes are multi-channel so one handset runs several curtains.
  • Wall switch / scene controller — a fixed point on the wall, so guests and family do not need a phone or an app.
  • Phone app — adds schedules (open at 6:30 a.m., close at sunset), positions, and remote control from outside the house.

Modern curtain motors are mechanically simple and last for years, but they are not zero-care. A few habits keep them faultless:

  • Keep the rail clean and aligned. Dust and a bent rail are the usual cause of a motor stalling or sounding strained — the same maintenance any heavy manual track needs.
