The Accessible Route
Access is not a set of scattered features but a continuous chain - from the boundary to every function and back. This lesson is about the route, the single most important organising idea in accessible design, and the one broken link that undoes a whole building
One step is all it takes. A ramp everywhere but the door still leaves someone on the pavement.
A community centre is proud of its access: an automatic front door, wide bright corridors, a good lift, a spacious accessible toilet. A wheelchair user comes to a meeting, crosses the car park - and stops. Between the car park and that lovely automatic door is a single kerb, one step high, that nobody quite owned. Everything beyond it is excellent and entirely out of reach. Accessibility is not a set of good features scattered through a building; it is a continuous route from the boundary to every function, and it is only as good as its weakest link.
This lesson is about that route - the organising idea of accessible design. We will treat access as a journey rather than a checklist, model it as a chain whose every link must hold, look at the predictable places routes break in real buildings, and set out the method that prevents it: draw the accessible route first, make it the route everyone uses, and test it end to end as each of the people who must travel it. The route is the unit of access
It is tempting to think of accessibility as a list of features - a ramp here, a wide door there, an accessible toilet somewhere in the building. But a disabled person does not use a feature in isolation; they make a journey, and what matters is whether that whole journey works from beginning to end. The organising idea of this lesson - and one of the most important in the whole course - is the accessible route: a continuous, unobstructed, level-or-ramped path that lets a person get from the boundary of the site all the way to every function they need, and back out again.
Think about what a single visit actually involves. A person arrives at the site boundary, perhaps from the street or a bus stop. They cross to a car park or drop-off, or continue on foot. They travel to the building entrance and get in. Inside, they move horizontally along corridors and lobbies, and vertically between floors. They reach the room they came for - an office, a classroom, a consulting room - and, at some point, the toilet. Then they leave. Every one of those segments is part of one route, and the route is accessible only if all of them are.

This reframing changes how you judge a building. A gorgeous accessible entrance means nothing if the person cannot cross the car park to reach it. A perfect accessible toilet is useless if it is up a step from the corridor. The route is the thing you design and the thing you must test, end to end, as a single continuous line on the plan. When you draw a building, draw the accessible route first, as one unbroken path, and make sure it actually reaches everywhere a person has a right to go - not just the front door.

The chain - and the link that breaks it
The most useful metaphor for the accessible route is a chain. A chain is only as strong as its weakest link, and an accessible route is only as usable as its least accessible segment. You can get every part right - a level approach, an automatic door, wide corridors, a good lift - and undo all of it with a single unramped step between the lift lobby and the meeting room. The person meets that step and the journey ends there, no matter how excellent everything upstream was.
This is why accessibility cannot be delivered in fragments by different people who never check the joins. The landscape architect ramps the approach; the architect details a level entrance; the services engineer places a lift; the interior designer specifies the rooms - and unless someone owns the whole chain, a break appears exactly where two scopes meet: the threshold nobody quite owned, the step down into the sunken lounge, the heavy fire door on the route to the accessible WC, the single riser at the shop's back entrance that was 'always going to be sorted later'. The discipline that follows is to trace the entire chain, deliberately and repeatedly, and to be honest about every join. For a wheelchair user, is there a continuous level-or-ramped path with no single step, adequate clear width and turning space, from the boundary to each function? For a blind person, is there a continuous, followable, hazard-free route with the information they need at each decision point? For an ambulant disabled person, are there rails and places to rest along the way? Each user follows the same chain, and each finds a different weakest link - which is exactly why you trace it more than once.

Where routes break in real buildings
Once you start looking for broken links, you find them in predictable places - and knowing the usual culprits lets you catch them early. The commonest is the step you did not mean to design: a single riser at a threshold, a change of level between an old building and an extension, a raised platform for a stage or a shopfront, a 'feature' sunken floor. One step is all it takes; it is the classic broken link, and it is almost always avoidable if caught at concept stage.
A second family of breaks lives at doors and thresholds. A door whose clear opening is too narrow once the frame and leaf are counted; a threshold upstand that a wheelchair cannot ride over; a door too heavy to open from a seated position; a pair of doors with a lobby too shallow to turn in between them. The route looks continuous on plan but pinches shut at the openings. A third family is the route that exists but is unusable: a corridor technically wide enough but lined with furniture, a ramp so steep it is dangerous, a lift too small for a wheelchair, a 'level' surface of loose gravel or deep-pile carpet that a chair cannot cross.
Then there are the breaks of management and afterthought: the accessible entrance kept locked 'for security' so a disabled visitor must phone ahead and be let in through a side door; the accessible route that leads to the back of the building past the bins while everyone else uses the grand front steps; the temporary A-board or delivery pallet parked on the tactile route. These are not always design failures on paper, but they break the chain in use, and a designer who cares about the route thinks about how it will be managed, not just how it is drawn. The lesson is to distrust the plan and imagine the journey: walk it as each user, and the breaks reveal themselves - usually well before anyone has poured concrete.
Designing the route from the first sketch
Because the route is a chain, it has to be designed as one thing, early, by someone who owns it end to end. The practical method is simple and worth making a habit. Draw the accessible route first. Before the plan hardens, put down a single continuous line from the site boundary to every key function - entrance, reception, the rooms, the accessible WC, the fire refuge - and make it level or gently ramped throughout, wide enough, with turning spaces where a wheelchair must reorient. If that line cannot be drawn without a step, the plan is wrong, and it is cheap to fix now and ruinous to fix later.
Make the accessible route the main route wherever you can. The ideal is that there is no separate 'accessible way in' at all - everyone uses the same level, generous, dignified entrance and the same circulation. A separate accessible entrance round the back is a second-class experience and a management liability; a single inclusive route is better design and avoids the whole problem. Where the geometry genuinely forces a difference, keep the accessible route as short, direct and visible as the standard one, never longer or meaner.

Finally, test the chain, repeatedly, as different people. Trace it as a wheelchair user, as a blind person, as an ambulant disabled person, as a parent with a pram - each will snag on a different link. Check the clear widths at the doors, the turning circle in the lobby, the gradient of the ramp, the continuity of the tactile route, the reach to the lift controls. This is exactly the kind of route the next module details, segment by segment - approach and arrival, entrances and doors, ramps and lifts. Get the route right as a continuous whole here, and those detailed moves have something coherent to serve. The accessible route is the spine of accessible design; everything else hangs off it.

- 1Pick a destination inside a building (say a specific room and the nearest toilet) and start at the site boundary, as a visitor would.
- 2Walk the whole route to the destination and back, photographing every step, threshold, narrow door, heavy door, steep slope, loose surface or locked accessible entrance.
- 3Now imagine the same route as a wheelchair user: mark the first point where you would be stopped - that is the primary broken link.
- 4Walk it again in imagination as a blind person using a cane: note where the route is confusing, hazardous, or gives no information at a decision point.
- 5List every broken link you found, in order, and for the worst one sketch the design change that would repair the chain - a level threshold, a wider door, a ramp, an unlocked main entrance.

Three altitudes on the same idea

You own the chain, and no one else will. The accessible route crosses every discipline's scope - site, entrance, core, rooms - so unless you trace it end to end, a break appears exactly where two scopes meet. Draw the continuous accessible route first, make it the route everyone uses rather than a back-door afterthought, and test it as each user before the plan hardens. A single unowned step or threshold undoes a whole building's worth of good access, and it is a line on a drawing now versus a demolition later.
Your rooms are the last links in the chain - and the easiest to break. A step down into a sunken lounge, a threshold upstand, a heavy door on the way to the accessible WC, furniture narrowing a 'wide' corridor - each is an interiors decision that severs the route. Keep every floor level continuous, every clear width real once furniture is placed, and every threshold flush, so the route the architect drew actually survives contact with your finishes and layout rather than quietly breaking in the last hundred millimetres.
Stop judging buildings by their entrances and start walking the whole journey. Pick any building and trace one continuous line from the boundary to the furthest toilet as a wheelchair user - then again as a blind person. The first place you stop is the broken link. Do this everywhere until 'draw the accessible route first' is second nature. Access is a journey, and the designers who see it as a chain never ship a building with a step in the middle of it.
