The hook

In India the barriers are real - cost, access, no headset you can wear all day. And the value is just as real - a first-time home-builder who cannot read a plan, standing inside their house before a brick is laid.

It would be dishonest to write about spatial computing for an Indian readership in the same breathless tone the field uses globally, and equally dishonest to dismiss it as a rich country's toy. The truth has two full sides, and this lesson insists on both. On one side are barriers that are not excuses but facts: high-end headsets and the computers to drive them are expensive in Indian terms, access to them is uneven outside the big metros, comfortable all-day hardware does not exist anywhere in the world yet, and the time to prepare models for immersive use is scarce in busy, cost-sensitive practices.

On the other side is value that is genuine, accessible and growing - and, crucially, particularly well matched to Indian conditions. The single most valuable use of spatial computing, letting a client who cannot read drawings simply stand inside their future home, speaks directly to a market full of first-time home-builders for whom a plan is an abstraction and an expensive late change is a real hardship. Start with the barriers, plainly, because a hopeful case built on ignoring them is worthless. The first is cost. A high-end 'spatial computer' or a powerful VR-capable workstation represents a serious sum in Indian terms - often out of proportion to the margins of a small residential practice or the budget of a student. Even where a device is affordable, the fuller setup (a machine strong enough to prepare and drive rich models, the software, the time) adds up. The value

The accessible value: clients who cannot read plans

Now the other side, which is just as real and, in India, unusually strong. The single most valuable thing spatial computing does - letting someone who cannot read a drawing simply stand inside a space and understand it - is matched to an Indian reality more than almost anywhere. A very large share of building here is done for and by first-time home-builders: families building the one house they will ever build, often on hard-won savings, who have never had to read an architectural plan and cannot picture the rooms from lines on a sheet. For them the gap between the drawing and the felt space is not a mild inconvenience; it is the source of anxiety, of misunderstanding, and of the expensive changes that hurt most when the budget is tight and personal.

Into exactly that gap, spatial computing delivers its clearest value, and it does so affordably. Beyond the single client in the room, two further features of the Indian landscape make spatial computing a genuine fit rather than a stretch. The first is remote collaboration across distance. Taken together, these make the Indian case specific rather than borrowed.
