Ergonomics, seating, posture myths and the workstation
Ergonomics is a single idea: you fit the task, the tool and the space to the human — not the human to the space. This unit derives the seat dimensions that follow from the body, then grades the posture folklore straight: there is no one correct posture, the ‘135° recline’ study is over-claimed, ‘sitting is the new smoking’ is a slogan, a standing desk is not a cure, and an ‘ergonomic’ chair is only ergonomic once it is actually adjusted to its user.

What ergonomics is
When someone must contort to use a workstation, ergonomics says the workstation is wrong — not the person. The discipline spans the body, the mind and the system, not just chairs.[1]
Fit the task to the human
The International Ergonomics Association defines ergonomics (or 'human factors') as the discipline concerned with the interactions between humans and the other elements of a system, applying theory and data to optimise human well-being and system performance. The load-bearing idea: you fit the task, tool and space to the HUMAN, not the human to the space. When someone must contort to use a workstation, ergonomics says the workstation is wrong — not the person.[1]
Sitting well
A seat fits when its dimensions follow the sitter’s body: seat height from popliteal height (feet flat), seat depth from buttock-popliteal length (a gap behind the knee), the backrest supporting the lumbar curve.[2]
Set by popliteal height
A seat 'fits' when its dimensions follow the sitter's body. SEAT HEIGHT is governed by POPLITEAL HEIGHT (floor to behind the knee): feet flat on the floor, thighs roughly horizontal, and NO compression under the thigh at the seat's front edge. Set a fixed seat near the SMALL user's popliteal height (or provide a footrest) so short people's feet reach the floor; taller users raise an adjustable seat.[2]
Posture myths
There is no single ideal posture — the best posture is your next posture. The 135° study is real but tiny and over-claimed; ‘sitting is the new smoking’ is a slogan; a standing desk is for alternation, not a cure.[3, 4, 5, 6]
The best posture is your next posture
The upright '90-90-90' pose (hips, knees, ankles at right angles) is a teaching heuristic, not a proven optimum. The evidence-based consensus is that there is NO single ideal static posture — any posture held long enough loads the same tissues and becomes harmful. Movement and VARIATION matter more than any 'correct' angle. The field maxim is 'the best posture is your next posture'.[3]
The workstation & reach
Set the workstation for a neutral posture — monitor at eye level, elbows relaxed, wrists straight — and place items by reach: frequent items in the normal arc, occasional items in the maximum arc.[7, 8]
Neutral posture, sensible defaults
Mainstream guidance (the US OSHA computer-workstation eTool — guidance, not law): the monitor top at or slightly below eye level, about arm's length away; elbows relaxed at ~90–120°; wrists NEUTRAL (straight, not bent); feet flat or on a footrest. There is no single 'correct' desk height — it depends on the user's seated elbow height and the task, so fix the elbow-to-keyboard relationship (chair height plus a footrest or a height-adjustable desk) rather than trusting one universal desk height.[7]

Key terms

Study task
Take a chair and workstation you use every day and audit it ergonomically. Measure or estimate your popliteal height and check whether the seat lets your feet rest flat with no pressure behind the knee; check the seat depth, the lumbar support, the monitor height and your elbow angle. List what is adjustable and what is fixed, and set each adjustable element correctly. Then write one honest paragraph separating what genuinely helps your body from the marketing — is the chair ‘ergonomic’ because it is adjusted to you, or only because the label says so? Learning to judge a setup by fit and movement, not price or slogans, is the point of this unit.
