Small-Space Transformation
In a very small home, transformation stops being a clever trick and becomes the whole strategy - a single room made to be bedroom, office and living room in turn can let a few square metres live like many - yet this is exactly where fiddly mechanisms get abandoned, so honesty about what people will really do decides everything
A studio flat has one room to do everything. You cannot give it more floor - so the only way to make it live large is to let that one room become several rooms, in turn, through the day.
There is a scale of home where flexibility stops being an option and becomes the entire strategy: the studio flat, the one-room home, the micro-apartment, the few square metres that must hold a whole life. You cannot solve a tiny home by adding rooms - there is no more floor to give. The only lever left is time. If the single room can be a bedroom at night, a workspace by day and a living and dining room in the evening - each in turn, not all at once - then a home of fifteen or twenty square metres can live like one two or three times its size. The reason is not cost alone; it is that in the space you live in every single day, the simple, reliable, one-hand move is the one you will keep doing, and the elaborate mechanism is the one you will abandon - which is the subject of the next section, and the honest crux of the whole idea.

Design the stowage so nothing blocks the change - the bed can only fold up if the things on it have an easy home. Make every state truly good so no one is tempted to camp in one. And test it against a real, tired human, not an enthusiast: would you, at eleven at night or seven in the morning, actually do this, every day, for years? If the honest answer is no, simplify until it is yes - fewer moving parts, easier moves, or a loose-fit layout that needs no transformation at all. The measure of a small-space design is not how impressively it can transform, but how reliably it actually does.
