
What Product Design Is
Form, function, use and making together — not styling
Product design is the integration of how a product looks (form), what it does (function), how it is used (ergonomics) and how it is made — it is not styling. Dieter Rams’s ten principles test whether design is good, summed up as ‘less, but better’: cut away everything that doesn’t serve the function. And a design starts not with a pleasing shape but by justifying the need — what problem, for whom — because a beautiful answer to no real question is waste.

Product design integrates form, function, use and making — a well-designed spoon is good to look at, good to use AND good to make. Rams’s ‘less, but better’ means cutting what doesn’t serve the function, not stripping to look minimal.[1, 3]
Form, function, use and making
Product design is the INTEGRATION of how a product LOOKS (form), what it DOES (function), how it is USED (ergonomics and experience) and how it is MADE (materials and manufacture). It is not STYLING — making an existing object look nicer on the surface. 'Product design is styling' is a MYTH: the best design resolves all four together, so a well-designed spoon or chair is good to look at, good to use, and good to make, not merely pretty. Design is a whole-object discipline.[1, 2]
The designer's role
The product designer’s role is to solve a real human problem well — making an object useful, usable, well-made and worth owning. It is a serving role, measured by how well it serves the user, not how striking it looks.[1, 4]

The PRODUCT DESIGNER's role is to solve a real human problem well — to make an object that is useful, usable, well-made and worth owning. That means understanding the USER and the USE deeply, working with engineering and manufacture, and taking responsibility for the whole object, from how it feels in the hand to how it is recycled. It is a serving role, not a self-expressive one: the measure of the work is how well it serves the person who uses it, not how striking it looks in a portfolio.[1, 4]

A design starts with the need, not a shape — ‘product design starts with a cool form’ is a myth. From the need, the process runs research, concept, development, prototyping and production, iteratively.[1]
What problem, for whom
A product design starts not with a shape but with a NEED. The first questions are: what problem does this solve, for whom, and should it exist at all? 'Product design starts with a cool form' is a MYTH — a beautiful answer to no real question is waste, and the world has enough objects. Justifying the need (the course's first outcome) is the real first skill: a clear, real problem for a real user is what a good product is an honest answer to. The shape comes much later, once the need is understood.[1]

Means: Dieter Rams's test: good design is innovative, useful, aesthetic, understandable, honest, unobtrusive, long-lasting, thorough, environmentally friendly and 'as little design as possible'.

Function first
Means: The principle that a product's form should be led by what it does — the modernist dictum, from Louis Sullivan.
Honestly · True as a starting order, but over-stated as a law: form ALSO carries meaning, emotion and brand, and 'follows function' never means 'may be ugly'. Function first, but form still communicates and delights.
Aesthetics & emotion
Delight that serves
Means: The look and feel of a product — its beauty and the emotion it evokes — which is real value, not decoration (Norman's visceral, behavioural, reflective levels).
Honestly · Aesthetics are not superficial: a product people love is used and kept longer. But beauty SERVES function; it never replaces it. A gorgeous tool that works badly is still a bad tool.
User need first
Justify the product
Means: Starting a design by defining the NEED — what problem, for whom — before drawing a shape, and justifying that the product should exist at all.
Honestly · 'Product design starts with a cool shape' is a MYTH. It starts with a need worth solving; a beautiful answer to no real question is waste. The first design skill is asking whether, and why, to make it.
Anthropometry (the range)
Design for the spread
Means: Using body-measurement data to size a product for the RANGE of users — reach, grip, force, clearance — not a single 'average' person.
Honestly · 'Design for the average user' is a MYTH: almost no one is average on every dimension. Reach for the small, clear for the tall, and make it adjustable — the same lesson as space planning.
Man-machine fit
Fit the tool to the person
Means: Designing the product-and-person as one system, so the tool fits the human's abilities and limits — the definition of human factors / ergonomics.
Honestly · The human is PART of the system, not an add-on to it. You fit the product to the person, never expect the person to contort to the product — a badly-fitted tool causes strain, error and injury.
Error tolerance
Humans err — forgive it
Means: Designing so that human mistakes are prevented where possible and harmless where not — guards, constraints, undo, clear feedback.
Honestly · People WILL slip, mis-read and mis-handle. A good product makes the right action easy and the dangerous action hard, and forgives the error — blaming the user is not a design solution.
Affordance
What it lets you do
Means: The action an object makes possible by its form — a button affords pressing, a handle affords pulling, a flat plate affords pushing (Don Norman).
Honestly · The form should MATCH the action: a door with a pull handle you must push is a 'Norman door' that lies about its affordance. Good affordances mean you know what to do without thinking.
Signifier
The cue that shows how
Means: A perceivable signal that tells the user where and how to act — a label, an arrow, a shaped grip, a highlighted edge (Norman).
Honestly · Affordances make an action possible; signifiers make it OBVIOUS. If a product needs a stuck-on 'PUSH' label to be used, its signifiers failed — the design should signal the action itself.
Feedback & mapping
Response and natural layout
Means: FEEDBACK confirms an action happened (a click, a light); MAPPING lays out controls to match what they control (the left knob for the left burner).
Honestly · Poor mapping is why we turn the wrong stove burner; missing feedback is why we press a button twice. Natural mapping and clear feedback make a product feel effortless and obvious.
Quantitative vs qualitative display
Match the display to the task
Means: A QUANTITATIVE display gives a precise value (a digital number); a QUALITATIVE one gives a glance, a trend or a status (an analog dial, a bar, a light).
Honestly · Match the display to the TASK: a digital readout is bad for an at-a-glance check (you must read and interpret), while an analog dial shows 'nearly empty' or 'rising' instantly. The wrong display type is a real ergonomic error.
Visual codes & symbols
Coded, standard, consistent
Means: Colours, shapes and symbols that carry meaning on a product — red for danger, a standard power symbol, a consistent icon set.
Honestly · Codes work only when standard and consistent (a red control means stop everywhere), and never by colour alone (colour-blindness). An invented or inconsistent code confuses more than plain text.
Material & technology
Chosen for the job
Means: Selecting the material and production technology to suit the product's function, use, feel, cost and life — the engineering heart of a product.
Honestly · Material is a functional choice, not just a look: the grip's rubber, the frame's steel, the casing's polymer each earn their place. The wrong material feels wrong, fails early or costs too much.
Recyclability & repair
End-of-life matters
Means: Designing for the product's end of life — repairability, disassembly and recyclability — so it does not simply become waste.
Honestly · 'A product's job ends when it's sold' is a MYTH. A product that can't be repaired or recycled is a design failure; design for disassembly (parts that come apart and separate by material) is the honest, sustainable choice.
Design for manufacture
It must be makeable
Means: Designing a product so it can actually be MADE — economically, repeatably, at the intended volume — considering the production process from the start.
Honestly · A beautiful design that can't be produced economically is not a design, it's a wish. Feasibility for production and mass-production reality decide whether an idea becomes a real object.
Packaging
Protect, inform, honestly
Means: The packaging that protects a product, informs the buyer and represents it — part of the product design, not an afterthought.
Honestly · Good packaging protects and informs with as little material as the job needs; excessive or deceptive packaging is waste and a lie. It is designed with the product and for its end-of-life too.
‘Less, but better’ — a good product is honest, usable, makeable and for everyone, not styled.

Choose one everyday object you own — a peeler, a stapler, a chair — and analyse it as a product, not a shape. For it, describe how it resolves form, function, use and making, and score it against Rams’s principles (useful? honest? long-lasting? as little design as possible?). Then identify the need it answers — what problem, for whom — and judge whether it is a good answer or an over-designed one. Finally, propose one honest improvement that follows ‘less, but better’ (removing what doesn’t serve the function), and note the design-process step where you’d test it. The test is that you’ve judged the object as integrated design, not decoration.
