Layout is a circulation decision — and half of what you've heard about shoppers is folklore
Retail interior design begins as a circulation decision, not a styling one: the plan you choose sets how a shopper moves, what they pass, and how much of the floor earns its rent. This unit lays out the store-layout typologies and the honest anthropometrics of shopping — and then meets retail’s confident folklore head-on, grading each famous claim against the evidence. The decompression zone is real; ‘shoppers always turn right’ is far weaker than it is repeated. Learn to design the path, and to say which received wisdom earns a design move.

Planning the floor
A layout is a circulation choice before a palette; the floor is dimensioned for a moving, reaching, sometimes disabled public; and the drama is reserved for the display, not the aisle.[1, 2, 3]
You choose a path before you choose a palette
A store layout is a circulation decision first and a styling decision second. The plan you pick decides how a shopper moves, what they are led past, and how much of the expensive floor earns its rent. A GRID — long parallel gondola runs — is the most fixture-efficient plan and the reason every supermarket looks the same: maximum shelf, easy to stock, easy to find, but not a place you linger. A LOOP or racetrack lays a single main aisle that returns you to the door and deliberately routes you past every department — the department-store workhorse. A FREE-FLOW scatters fixtures with open space between them for an unhurried browse — the boutique plan, which trades density for experience. The BOUTIQUE or shop-in-shop breaks the floor into semi-enclosed worlds; HERRINGBONE suits a narrow deep plot with a central spine; and the DIAGONAL opens long sightlines and keeps the cash counter in view. Choose the plan for the retail type, not the mood board.[1]
The shopper, graded
Retail is thick with confident claims, so grade them: the decompression zone is the best-supported, ‘turn right’ is a myth as stated, and the skill is knowing which wisdom earns a design move.[4, 5, 6]
The landing strip is real
Just inside the entrance is a threshold the retail literature calls the decompression zone or the 'landing strip' — the first few metres where a shopper, arriving from the street, is still adjusting to the light, the temperature and the pace and is not yet ready to be sold to. It is one of the better-observed ideas in retail: displays, signage and hard-sell placed in this zone are routinely missed because the shopper walks straight through them, eyes not yet focused on merchandise. The design consequence is concrete — keep the first stretch relatively open, let the eye settle, and place your first real selling moment (the power wall) a little past it, not at the door. Grade: the BEST-SUPPORTED of the retail claims — but honestly, it is Underhill's expert field observation (from his firm's videotaped studies), not a controlled experiment, so treat the famous 'about ten feet' as a rule of thumb, not a measured constant.[4]

Pick a typology and see the plan it makes — how the grid packs shelf, how the loop routes you past every department, how the free-flow trades density for an unhurried browse. The efficiency badge is the honest trade: fixture density versus experience.

The most fixture-efficient plan: long parallel gondola runs pack the maximum shelf into the floor and make stock easy to find and replenish. It is orderly and cheap, but it is not leisurely — you shop it, you don't wander it. The classic supermarket plan.
Efficiency = how much sellable fixture the plan packs in (high) versus how much it spends on generous, exploratory space (low). Choose the plan for the retail type, not the mood board.

The comfortable display band (~900–1500 mm, waist-to-eye) where best-sellers belong; floor and over-head are dead zones.
Study task
Take a small shop you know — a pharmacy, a boutique, a bakery — and analyse its plan honestly. Name the layout typology it uses and say whether it fits the retail type; find its decompression zone and its power wall (or note that it wastes the door on hard-sell); and check one dimension for the accessible body, not the average one — can a wheelchair user reach the counter and pass the main aisle? Then propose one change to the circulation that would make the floor work harder, and one received piece of retail wisdom you would deliberately ignore because the evidence is weak. Designing the path, and judging the folklore — not restyling the fixtures — is the skill this unit builds.

- [6]On 'staples at the back' as a walk-past trick: mainly folklore — rear placement of milk/dairy is driven by cold-chain logistics (loading dock → walk-in cooler) and refrigeration cost, not primarily by store-flow strategy (small-format stores put milk at the front). 'Destination item' is a real term; attributing milk placement chiefly to it is a myth. And on 'eye level is buy level': the principle is supported by eye-tracking (Chandon, Hutchinson, Bradlow & Young, Journal of Marketing, 2009), but the circulating percentages are trade lore.
