
Visual Merchandising & Commercial Lighting
Accent light is a ratio, not a fitting — and colour psychology is weaker than the trade claims
Here the display becomes a system and the light becomes a tool. Visual merchandising choreographs what a shopper sees first, second and third; commercial lighting is built in layers; and the key discipline is that accent lighting is not a fitting but a ratio — a number that decides whether a product pops or disappears — paired with the CRI that lets a red read as red. Throughout, the atmospherics of colour, music and scent are graded honestly: real effects, but smaller and more fragile than the trade sells them.

Visual merchandising
Merchandising is choreography: the window is the store’s one conversation with the street, the power wall sets the tone, and sightlines hand the eye forward to focal points.[1, 2]
The store's one conversation with the street
Visual merchandising is the discipline of presenting product to sell, and it runs on hierarchy and sightline. The WINDOW is the loudest tool — the store's single conversation with the street, its poster, changed with the season and built to stop a passer-by. Inside, the POWER WALL is the first strong surface the settled shopper meets (past the decompression zone), merchandised hard because it sets the tone. Between them run the SIGHTLINES — the deliberate long views that pull a shopper deeper, each ending on a focal point (a lit feature, a bold display, a change of colour) so the eye is always being handed forward. Merchandising is choreography: decide what the shopper sees first, second and third, and build the displays and lighting to enforce that order.[1]
Commercial lighting
A commercial scheme is built in four layers — ambient, task, accent, decorative — and only the accent, ridden as a ratio above the ambient base and given a true-colour CRI, is what makes a store feel designed.[8, 7]
Ambient, task, accent, decorative
Every good commercial lighting scheme is built in LAYERS, each with a job. AMBIENT (general) light fills the room to a safe, comfortable base level so people can move and see. TASK light serves a specific activity — the till, the fitting-room mirror, the wrap counter — at a higher level where the work happens. ACCENT light picks out the merchandise, the display, the hero, and is what makes a store feel designed rather than merely lit. DECORATIVE light (the chandelier, the feature pendant, the neon) is seen for itself and carries brand and mood. A store lit only with a flat blanket of ambient — the office-ceiling mistake — has no focal points and nothing to sell you first; the layers, balanced, are what direct the eye. India's interior-illumination code, IS 3646 (Part 1), sets the ambient base to design against — a retail band of 300–500–750 lux (minimum–service–maximum) for shops and showrooms, with arcades lower at 100–150–200 — and the accent then rides above that base.[8]
Make it pop
Turn ‘make it pop’ into a number. Raise the accent-to-ambient ratio and watch the product separate from a darkening surround; toggle the CRI and watch a bright accent drain the colour. Only the 5:1 carries an IES attribution — the rest are designer rules of thumb.

Study task
Take one display — a window, a feature table, a wall bay — and specify its lighting properly. Name the four layers you would use and where; choose an accent-to-ambient ratio for the effect you want and justify the number; and state the CRI and colour temperature for the merchandise, with a line on why a bright accent with a poor CRI would be self-defeating. Then grade one atmospheric claim honestly — a colour, a music tempo, a scent — saying what the evidence really supports and how small the effect is. Turning ‘make it feel special’ into a defensible lighting spec, and refusing to oversell the atmospherics, is the professional skill here.
