
The Software Landscape
What each tool is for, the cost that dissolves, and the myth that persists
There are more 3D tools than anyone can learn, and most of the advice about them is marketing. This unit strips it back to two honest questions: what is each tool genuinely for, and what does it cost you — not in rupees, which this course will not publish because they cannot be verified for India, but in dependency. Along the way it takes apart the claim that governs Indian syllabi — that you must learn 3ds Max to be employable — and shows that the evidence for it measures something else entirely.

What each tool is for
A modeller builds the geometry; a renderer turns it into an image; they are two separate choices. And for a student the cost of learning any of them is effectively zero — but Blender’s freedom is a different kind of thing altogether.[1, 2, 6]
What each tool is genuinely for
SketchUp is fast conceptual and space-planning modelling — the default of the small Indian studio, and genuinely good at getting a room built quickly. Blender is a complete free pipeline: model, sculpt, texture, render, animate, all in one application. Rhino is precise NURBS — the tool when something must be genuinely curved and accurate, like moulded joinery or a product. 3ds Max is high-end offline archviz, strong with heavy scenes and the Corona/V-Ray workflow. Revit is documentation and BIM — a database that draws, not a visualization tool. Match the tool to the task: you do not model a jaali screen the way you lay out a flat.[1, 2]
Blender's freedom is different
A student licence expires; a free tier can add a watermark next year; a revenue threshold catches you the moment you succeed. Blender’s GPL does none of that — it grants use for any purpose permanently, and covers the application, not your artwork.[6]
The 3ds Max myth, and the AI one
The surveys quoted to prove 3ds Max dominates are rendering-engine surveys with no modelling-software share at all, and the famous figure is a poll on a render farm’s blog. India’s real market is documentation-led. And the fear that AI will make rendering obsolete has it backwards — AI replaced the denoiser, and every archviz AI feature needs your model as its input.[4, 7, 8, 9]
'You must learn 3ds Max to be employable'
It is repeated in syllabi and coaching centres across India as settled fact: master 3ds Max or you will not get hired. It is worth stating plainly that the claim is not supported by the evidence usually offered for it — and that the evidence, when you trace it, measures something else entirely. This is not an argument that 3ds Max is unimportant. It is an argument that a specific, confident, career-shaping claim is resting on data that cannot bear it, and a student deserves to know that before spending a year on it.[7]

Key terms
Software that builds the 3D geometry — SketchUp, Blender, Rhino, 3ds Max, Revit. Distinct from the renderer that images it.
An engine that turns a model into an image. Offline (V-Ray, Corona) chase fidelity; real-time (Enscape, Lumion, D5, Twinmotion) render as you move.
Building Information Modelling — a semantic database that also draws (Revit). Documentation and coordination, not visualization.

When the people sampled are not representative of the population claimed — e.g. polling a render farm's readers about industry-wide modelling habits.
Study task
Pick a small real project — a studio apartment, a shop interior — and choose your toolset for it: a modeller, a renderer, and a fallback if a client demands a format you don’t own. Justify each choice in one line by task, not by brand. Then write a short honest paragraph on dependency: which of your chosen tools could change its terms on you after you graduate — raise a price, add a watermark, catch a revenue threshold — and which one never can? If your whole pipeline depends on tools someone else controls, say so plainly. Naming that risk is a professional skill the software tutorials never teach.
