You will forget most of the details in this course. That is fine. What matters is the literacy underneath them - a way of seeing every building as a citizen of the grid - and that you will keep.

No single course can keep pace with this field. The technologies are improving, the grids are cleaning, the tariffs and markets are evolving, and any specific figure or product mentioned here will be out of date before long. So it would be a mistake to end by asking you to memorise a checklist. The particular numbers are not the point, and they never were - they belong to the engineers, the utility and the codes, and they change. What is durable, and what this whole course has really been building, is a literacy: a small set of habits and a way of seeing that let you approach any building, anywhere, at any point in this fast-moving transition, and design it well.

How to stay literate in a field that will not sit still

The uncomfortable truth about this subject is that it is moving fast and will keep moving - which means grid-literacy is not a state you reach once but a practice you maintain. The good news is that the five habits are stable even as the details churn, so keeping up is not about relearning everything; it is about refreshing the specifics that sit on top of the durable frame. A few disciplines make that manageable.

Watch the grid, not just the gadgets. The most consequential variable for any electrified building is how clean and how reliable its grid is and is becoming, so keeping a rough, current sense of your grid's trajectory - greening fast, still coal-heavy, more or less reliable - matters more than tracking the latest product. Track the direction of costs and capabilities, not the exact numbers. You do not need this year's battery price to know that storage is getting cheaper and better, or this month's tariff to know that flexibility markets are slowly maturing; the direction is what shapes design decisions, and it is more stable than any figure. Learn from the engineers you work with. Every project with a good electrical, mechanical or energy engineer is a chance to update your intuition about what is now feasible, affordable and code-compliant - treat their feedback as continuing education, and notice where last year's assumptions have shifted.
