From energy consumer to grid citizen — the two linked shifts of electrification (off fossil fuel to all-electric, so a cleaning grid decarbonises the building) and grid-interactivity (from passive consumer to flexible partner that generates, stores and shifts energy for a variable renewable grid), unified as the grid-interactive efficient building. Energy and grid basics, electrifying the building (heat pumps, induction, getting off gas), on-site generation and storage (renewables, batteries, thermal storage, EVs and vehicle-to-grid), grid-interactive buildings (demand flexibility, DERs, the building as a grid asset), controls and intelligence, designing the electrified building, performance and carbon (operational carbon and the grid, carbon-aware operation, resilience), economics/policy/the utility, reality/limits/honesty (electrify-washing, the dirty-grid problem, when electrification is hard, equity), and practice and the future. Rigorous and honest — electrification only helps as fast as the grid cleans, and heat pumps and flexibility markets have real caveats — for architects, interior designers and students. Defers electrical capacity and design, HVAC/heat-pump sizing, grid interconnection and demand-response participation, and any carbon or cost figure, to qualified engineers, the utility/DISCOM and the governing codes (NBC India, ECBC, IS, CEA, tariff/net-metering rules), treating figures as illustrative. India-aware: cooling-led, supply-variable, coal-but-greening.
