The hype cycle
New technology follows a hype cycle — peak, trough, then a plateau of real productivity. Reading any trend, a designer asks where on the curve it sits and what it truly delivers. The disciplined question is whether it adds real value, better than a simpler alternative — not whether it is new.[1]
Where on the curve?
New technology follows a familiar arc — the HYPE CYCLE (Gartner's five phases). An INNOVATION TRIGGER sets off wild excitement (a PEAK of inflated expectations); reality disappoints and interest crashes (a TROUGH of disillusionment); understanding matures (a SLOPE of enlightenment); and slowly the technology finds its real, useful place (a PLATEAU of productivity). It is a heuristic, not a law — not every technology follows it, and some fail outright. Reading any new technology, a designer asks: WHERE on this curve does it sit, and what does it TRULY deliver versus what is promised? Much design technology — AI, VR, smart homes, 3D printing — is somewhere on this curve right now. Placing it honestly is the antidote to both breathless hype and lazy dismissal; the truth is usually in between.[1]

The best way to judge a technology is to study it in a real project — a case study of what tech, used how, to solve what, and what it genuinely delivered versus cost. A seminar turns this into shared critical thinking, sharpening the career-long habit of evaluating each new tool honestly.[1]

The best way to judge a technology is to STUDY it in a REAL project — a CASE STUDY. Take a building or interior that used a technology (a 3D-printed structure, an AI-assisted design, a smart-home fit-out, a digitally-fabricated feature) and analyse it honestly: what technology, used HOW, to solve WHAT problem; what it genuinely delivered; what it cost and where it fell short; and whether it was the right choice. Studying real successes AND failures builds judgement far faster than slogans. It teaches the designer to see past the marketing to the actual result — the difference between what a technology promises and what it does.[1]

Analyse it honestly: what technology, used how, to solve what problem; what it genuinely delivered; what it cost and where it fell short; and whether it was the right choice. Place the technology on the hype cycle — peak, trough or plateau — and separate the vendor’s claims from the evidence. Finish with your verdict: does this technology add real value, and when would you adopt it? Grade the big claims about it VERIFIED, NUANCED or MYTH. The test is a designer who commands technology with judgement.
