Colour on the Facade

A facade colour is a public, permanent, large-scale decision - seen by a whole street for decades, weathering under sun and rain the whole time. It has to be chosen for the long game, not the swatch card.

The hook

The chip on your desk is a few centimetres wide, held for a minute. The facade is hundreds of square metres, held by a whole street for twenty years.

Interior colour is a private, close-range, changeable decision. Facade colour is almost its exact opposite - and treating the two the same is where a lot of good buildings quietly go wrong. A facade colour is huge, it is public, and it is close to permanent. The client may approve it, but the real audience is everyone who walks, drives and lives past it, every day, for a decade or more.

And for that whole time it is out in the weather. It fades in the sun, streaks in the rain, greens in the shade, and soils along the city's grime lines. So a facade colour cannot be chosen the way you choose a cushion - for how it looks, fresh, indoors, today. It has to be chosen for the long game: how it will read at scale and distance, how it will age, and who will maintain it. This lesson gives you that long view before you ever open a fandeck.

A facade colour is public, permanent and huge

An interior colour is seen by a few people, at close range, under lights you control, and repainted whenever the mood changes. A facade colour is the opposite on every count, and that difference is the whole subject of this module. A facade colour is public - the street, not the client, is its true audience - it is large, it is seen from far and near at once, and it stays put for years. Once the scaffold comes down, you have committed a colour to a neighbourhood.

Scale changes the colour itself. The chip you approve in the office is a few centimetres square, held at arm's length under a tube. On the building it becomes hundreds of square metres, wrapping corners into sun and shade, seen across a road. A reliable effect follows: a colour spread over a large area reads lighter and more saturated than the same colour on a small sample. The gentle sage on the card can arrive as an assertive mint; the tasteful grey-blue can turn cold and heavy. Experienced facade designers routinely pick a shade a step more muted, and often a touch deeper, than the sample that first pleased them - because they are designing the wall, not the card.

Distance changes it again. Seen from across a street or a moving car, fine detail collapses and colour carries more of the message. Haze softens and slightly cools distant colour, fierce midday sun flattens and bleaches it, and low evening light deepens and warms it. So a facade is never one colour - it is a colour that performs differently by hour, weather and viewpoint, in public, for years. That is a real responsibility, and it rewards restraint over bravado.

How facade colour weathers and ages

Paint outdoors is under constant attack, and its colour is the first casualty. The main agents are predictable, which means you can design around them.

Fading (UV). Sunlight breaks pigment molecules down. Not all pigments are equal here: bright organic reds, magentas and some yellows are the fastest to fade - they can go chalky and pale within a few years on a sunny wall - while earth oxides and true mineral pigments (ochres, siennas, iron-oxide reds, greys) are far more lightfast and hold for decades. This is why traditional exterior palettes worldwide lean on earthy, muted tones: not only taste, but survival. A brilliant saturated hue is also the one that shows its fade most cruelly, because it has the furthest to fall.

Dirt and streaking. Rain does not wash a facade evenly. It runs, and it carries the city's grime with it, depositing dark streaks below sills, ledges, drip edges and copings, and leaving sheltered zones cleaner than exposed ones. The result is differential soiling - a pattern of clean and dirty that a flat, pale, matt colour shows mercilessly. Mid-tones and slightly textured or broken finishes hide it far better than a pristine off-white.

Biological growth. On damp, shaded, north-facing or monsoon-washed walls, algae and mould take hold and green or blacken the surface, especially on porous renders. Warm-humid coastal India is punishing here.

Differential weathering. The south and west elevations, hit hardest by sun, fade faster than the sheltered north; exposed parapets weather before protected reveals. A colour that was uniform on day one can become visibly uneven across a single building. Anticipating that - rather than being surprised by it - is part of the craft.

Maintenance, longevity and the honest lifecycle

There are two fundamentally different ways a building carries colour, and they age completely differently. Applied colour - paint, render, coating - sits on the surface and has a service life: it fades, dirties and eventually needs redoing. Integral or material colour - the colour of brick, stone, terracotta, timber, exposed concrete, anodised or powder-coated metal - is the material itself, and it ages rather than fails.

Applied colour buys you freedom and needs a maintenance conversation. A standard exterior emulsion in Indian conditions may look good for five to eight years; premium acrylic and elastomeric systems stretch that; mineral silicate paints, which bond chemically into masonry and let it breathe, last longer and fade very slowly; factory finishes on metal (powder-coat, PVDF, anodising) can hold for decades. None of this is free forever. If you specify a colour, you are also specifying a repaint cycle - so name it, and make sure the client knows who pays for it and when. A gorgeous colour nobody can afford to maintain becomes a grubby colour.

Material colour trades control for grace. Copper and Corten weather to green and rust-brown, lime plaster and stone soften, timber silvers. Handled well, this is patina - ageing that improves. Handled badly, it is just decay, or unplanned staining where run-off from one material blotches another. The distinction is in the detailing.

That is the quiet secret of facades that stay handsome: good detailing protects colour. Generous overhangs, drip grooves under sills and copings, throated projections that throw water clear of the face - these decide where the streaks land far more than the paint does. Colour longevity is a wet-weather detailing problem as much as a pigment problem.

Be honest with clients about this lifecycle from the start. A colour that looks spectacular for two years and grim for the next eight is not a good colour - it is a maintenance liability dressed as a design decision. Part of specifying exterior colour is agreeing, on paper, how often it will be renewed, by whom and at what cost, and choosing a colour and system whose ageing the client can actually live with and afford. The most professional facade colour is often the one that looks almost as good a little dirty as it does freshly painted, because that is the state it will spend most of its life in.

Designing facade colour that survives the decades

Pull it together into a way of working. First, let value and massing do the heavy lifting, and let colour support. Shadow, depth, material and the play of light already do enormous colour work on a facade before you add a single pigment; the strongest architectural colour usually works quietly with that, not against it. A building whose form reads well in grey will read well in colour; one that needs a loud colour to be interesting has a form problem colour cannot fix.

Second, choose pigments and systems for the exposure they will get. Favour lightfast earth oxides and mineral pigments for anything in full sun; use mineral silicate paints on masonry where breathability and longevity matter; specify factory finishes for metal. Avoid delicate pale colours in splash zones and at ground level where they scuff and soil, and think twice about very dark, high-movement renders on hot south walls where thermal cycling and cracking are worst.

Third, plan the colour in layers of permanence. The most durable, hardest-to-change elements - the primary wall material, the masses that read from far off - should carry the calmest, most timeless colour, because you are effectively stuck with them. Reserve any brighter or more fashionable colour for the elements that are cheap and quick to repaint or replace: a door, a gate, joinery, a screen, a shopfront. That way the building can be refreshed over the years without a full and costly repaint, and any colour that dates does the least damage. It is the architect's usual lesson of permanence - put the effort where change is hardest - applied to colour.

Fourth, test big, on site, over time. Never sign off a facade colour from a fandeck under office light. Paint a mock-up of at least one to two square metres on the actual wall, and look at it from across the street, up close, in morning and evening light, and wet as well as dry. The colour that survives all of those is the colour to build.

Finally, remember the street. A facade is a gift, or an imposition, to everyone who has to look at it. Let massing and shadow carry the composition and let colour serve it. A large sample, on site, seen at distance and over a day, is worth more than any fandeck.

Your instincts from interiors need recalibrating outdoors. The scale effect is stronger, the light is uncontrolled and brutal, and there is no repaint-on-a-whim. A colour you would love in a room can be crude at building size and merciless once it soils. When you advise on exterior colour - a boundary wall, a shopfront, a villa - go a step more muted, choose lightfast earthy pigments, and always judge a big patch outdoors in real daylight.

Start training your eye on the buildings you already pass. Notice how the same paint looks different on a chip and a wall, how streaks form under ledges, how a south wall has faded more than a north one. Photograph a fresh facade and a tired one and name what changed - value, chroma, evenness. This habit of reading real weathering, early, is what will later let you specify colour that lasts instead of colour that only photographs well new.

Misconception check

If I love the colour on the paint chip, that is the colour I will get on the building.

Almost never exactly. A colour on a small chip under indoor light behaves differently at full facade size, in daylight: it reads lighter and more saturated over a large area, shifts through the day, and looks different across the street versus up close. Then it changes again over time - fading in sun, streaking in rain, greening in damp shade, and ageing unevenly between sun-baked and sheltered elevations. So the chip is a rough starting point, not the decision. The real decision is made from a large sample painted on the actual wall and viewed outdoors, at distance, in morning and evening light, wet and dry - chosen knowing how it will look not just on day one but in year eight.
