Colour & Wellbeing
Colour touches wellbeing - but usually through light and nature, not a healing hue. In hospitals and schools especially, the honest, evidence-led approach outperforms the wellness marketing every time.
Colour can genuinely help people feel better - but almost always through daylight, a view of green, and calm, not through a hue with healing powers.
'Colour therapy' promises a lot: paint a ward a certain shade to lower blood pressure, a classroom another to lift mood and marks, bathe a room in coloured light to heal. It sells because we want it to be true - a cheap, gentle intervention that makes people well. Almost all of the specific, curative claims are unsupported, and some are simply wellness marketing wearing a lab coat. If a colour could lower your blood pressure by itself, it would be a drug, and it is not.
And yet colour and wellbeing is a real and serious subject, because the honest version is genuinely powerful - it is just not the version on the poster. The strongest links between the visual environment and how people feel run through daylight, views of nature, and calm, low-stress surroundings - and colour is woven through all three. Good colour supports those forces; bad colour undermines them. In the settings where wellbeing matters most - hospitals, clinics, schools, care homes, mental-health spaces - getting this right is not decoration, it is duty of care. This lesson gives you the evidence-led approach: what colour can honestly contribute to wellbeing, how biophilic colour works, and how to design for healthcare and education without over-promising.

Light first: the real engine of visual wellbeing
If you want to support wellbeing through the visual environment, start with light, not paint - and understand that colour and light are inseparable. The best-evidenced environmental influences on how people feel and function are about daylight and the quality and timing of light: good daylight is linked to better mood, better sleep and faster recovery; poor, flat, or wrongly-timed light does the reverse. Light also has a non-visual role - bright, cooler light in the day and dim, warmer light in the evening help keep the body clock (circadian rhythm) on track, which underpins sleep and mood.
Colour enters this in two ways. First, the colour of the light itself - its warmth or coolness (colour temperature, covered fully in Module 3) - matters more for felt wellbeing than the colour of most surfaces. Warm-white light in the evening in a bedroom or care home supports winding down; cool, bright light by day supports alertness. Get the light colour wrong and no wall colour will rescue the feeling of a space.
Second, surface colours shape how much and what kind of light fills a room. Light, high-value surfaces bounce daylight deeper into a space, lifting gloom in a room that struggles for light - a real wellbeing gain in a dim clinic corridor or a north-facing classroom. Very dark surfaces soak up light and can make an under-lit room oppressive. So value - the lightness of your colours - does quiet wellbeing work by managing the light budget of a room, long before hue does anything.

The practical order is clear: maximise good daylight, control glare, get the electric light colour and timing right, then use surface value to distribute that light well - and only then tune hue for atmosphere and meaning. A designer who leads with a 'wellness colour' and ignores the light has the priorities exactly backwards.

Biophilic colour: borrowing nature's calm, honestly
The second well-evidenced route to wellbeing is nature. Views of greenery and natural landscapes, natural light, natural materials and the presence of living things are repeatedly linked to lower stress, improved mood and better recovery of attention - the core of biophilic design. This is one of the more robust findings in environmental psychology, and colour is part of how it works.
Biophilic colour means drawing a palette from the natural world - the greens of foliage, the browns and ochres of earth and timber, the blues of sky and water, the soft neutrals of stone and sand - and using them to bring nature's restfulness indoors. It works for real reasons, not mystical ones: these are the muted, mostly low-chroma, value-varied colours our visual system evolved among, they carry strong calming associations (Lesson 2.2), and they read as easy and unthreatening. A room in soft greens, warm earth tones and natural wood, with good light and a plant or a view, genuinely feels more restorative than a hard, high-chroma, artificial-looking one - and the evidence supports the direction, even if it cannot promise a number.
Be honest about what is doing the work, though. Biophilic wellbeing comes most strongly from actual nature - real daylight, real plants, a real view, natural materials with their texture and variation - and colour is a supporting player. Painting a wall green is not the same as a window onto a garden. The strongest move is real greenery, natural light and natural materials; nature-derived colour then extends and harmonises that, reaching the surfaces you cannot make literally natural.
The design method is straightforward: prioritise daylight and views, bring in real plants and natural materials where you can, and build the palette from a natural reference - a landscape, a stone, a timber - so the whole room speaks the same restful, low-chroma language. That is biophilic colour done with integrity: nature first, colour amplifying it, no overclaim about healing hues.
Healthcare and education: where honesty is duty of care
Nowhere does colour-and-wellbeing matter more, or get overclaimed more, than in hospitals, clinics, care homes and schools - and nowhere is evidence-honesty more of an ethical duty. Vulnerable people spend long, stressful hours in these spaces; the wrong approach, dressed as 'healing colour', can waste money and miss what actually helps.
In healthcare, the honest priorities are: excellent daylight and views of nature (strongly linked to faster recovery and lower stress); calm, low-arousal surroundings that do not add visual stress to already anxious people; light, clean, well-lit surfaces that read as hygienic and reduce gloom; and - critically - colour used for orientation and reassurance rather than therapy. Colour coding and warm, non-institutional palettes help patients find their way and feel less alienated. What the evidence does not support is that a specific ward colour cures or measurably heals; avoid that claim entirely. There are also hard functional constraints unique to healthcare: colour must not distort clinical judgement - skin tones must read truthfully under the lighting for diagnosis, so lighting colour rendering (CRI, Module 3) and non-distorting wall colours matter more than a fashionable hue.
In education, the useful findings are again about arousal and light, not magic hues. Overly busy, highly saturated, visually chaotic classrooms can overload and distract young children; calm, moderately stimulating environments with good daylight support attention better. The move is a balanced palette - restful base with considered accents - abundant daylight and glare control, not a single 'concentration colour'. Age matters: young children tolerate and enjoy more colour and stimulation; older students and study spaces need calm.
Across both, the same discipline holds. Lead with daylight, nature and calm; use colour for wayfinding, reassurance and atmosphere; keep surroundings low-arousal where people are stressed or need focus; protect functional colour needs like true skin tones; and never promise therapy a hue cannot deliver. That is colour serving wellbeing with integrity - genuinely helpful, and honest about how.
Designing for wellbeing without the overclaims
Pull the module together into a way of working, so wellbeing colour is something you deliver rather than something you promise. The through-line of the whole of Module 2 lands here: colour matters, honestly and modestly, and its wellbeing power runs through light, nature, calm and meaning - never through a curative hue.
A practical order of operations. First, light and daylight - maximise it, control glare, get colour temperature and timing right for how the space is used and when. This is your biggest wellbeing lever, and it is largely a light decision. Second, nature - real views, plants and natural materials wherever possible; the visual and psychological gains are real. Third, calm - keep arousal appropriate: low and restful where people are stressed, ill, sleeping or concentrating; a little livelier where energy and interaction are wanted, tuned with chroma and contrast, not a magic colour. Fourth, meaning and comfort - use colour associations knowingly to make spaces feel human, welcoming and non-institutional, respecting culture (Lesson 2.2). Fifth, protect function - true colour rendering for tasks like diagnosis, and colour for orientation and safety.
And throughout, the honesty rule that has run through every lesson: describe what colour actually contributes - it supports mood, calm and comfort as one part of a whole - and refuse the overclaims of colour therapy and healing hues. This is not caution for its own sake; it is what makes you trustworthy and effective, especially in the healthcare and education work where it matters most.
Colour, used this way, is a genuine and generous tool for wellbeing. It cannot cure, but it can calm a frightened patient, welcome a nervous child, spread daylight into a dim room, bring a breath of nature indoors, and make a hard place feel human. Promise exactly that - no less, and no more - and you will do real good with colour, which is, in the end, the whole point of learning it.
Order: light, nature, calm, meaning, function. Colour supports wellbeing - it does not cure. Promise exactly that.

You need no software - just a natural reference and honest priorities. The aim is to design a restful palette the right way round: light and nature first, colour serving them, no overclaims.

- 1Choose a real room that needs to feel restful - a bedroom, a clinic corner, a study. Note its daylight, orientation and light quality first, before any colour. Write down what would improve the light.
- 2Pick a natural reference and pull five colours from it - the foliage green, an earth tone, a sky or water blue, a stone neutral, a warm accent. Keep them muted and value-varied.
- 3Assign the palette to the room by value: lightest colours where you need to spread daylight, mid-tones as the calm base, the accent used sparingly. Keep overall arousal low.
- 4Add the real-nature moves the palette only supports: where a plant, a natural material or a view could go. Note that these do more than the paint.
- 5Write the honest wellbeing statement for the scheme - what it genuinely contributes (calm, daylight spread, a sense of nature, comfort) and what it does not claim (curing or healing).

Wellbeing at building scale is won or lost on daylight, views and layout - colour then serves those. Orient and glaze for daylight and nature views, especially in healthcare, schools and care settings where the evidence for recovery and mood is strongest. Use surface value to carry daylight deep into the plan, and choose facade and interior colours that support rather than fight the light. Treat 'healing colour' claims with scepticism, and put your effort where the evidence is: light, nature, calm and a non-institutional human feel.
This is your chance to do real good - and your responsibility to do it honestly. Lead every wellbeing project with light and daylight, bring in real nature and natural materials, then build a biophilic, low-arousal palette that calms without going clinical. In healthcare, protect true skin tones for diagnosis and use colour for wayfinding and reassurance; in classrooms, keep the base calm with considered accents and let daylight do the lifting. Sell what colour genuinely gives - calm, comfort, welcome, light - and never colour 'therapy'.
Learn to spot 'colour therapy' overclaims and to argue for the evidence-led alternative - it is a mark of a serious designer. When you read that a hue heals or lifts marks, ask what the real driver is: almost always daylight, nature, calm or association, not the hue alone. Study biophilic design and the value of daylight seriously; they are where colour's wellbeing power actually lives. Practise building palettes from natural references, and you will be ready to design places that genuinely help people, honestly.
