Colour & Behaviour in Space
Does a red wall make you eat more? Does blue make you focus? The honest answers are smaller and more interesting than the headlines - and knowing the real size of each effect is what makes you useful.
Yes, colour changes how a room feels and behaves. No, it will not make people eat, focus or calm down on command. The gap between those two sentences is where good design lives.
'Red makes you hungry, so paint the restaurant red.' 'Blue boosts productivity, so paint the office blue.' These lines are everywhere - in design blogs, client briefs, even textbooks - and they are the most confident kind of wrong. They take an effect that is small, fragile and dependent on a dozen other things, and sell it as a lever you can pull. Follow them literally and you get a garish restaurant nobody lingers in and an office that feels like a call centre, with none of the promised results.
The truth is more useful, and it is not that colour does nothing. Colour genuinely nudges how a space is perceived and, at the edges, how people behave in it - a room can be made to feel warmer or cooler, calmer or more alert, more or less appetising. But every one of these effects is modest, easily swamped by light, layout, temperature, noise, company and habit, and often true only on average and in context. This lesson takes the four behaviours people ask about most - temperature, appetite, focus and calm - and scopes each one honestly, so you can promise what colour can actually deliver and stop repeating what it cannot.

Perceived temperature: the most solid effect, and still small
Of all the behavioural claims about colour, perceived temperature has the firmest footing - which is why it is worth leading with, and worth scoping carefully. Warm hues (reds, oranges, warm yellows) tend to make a space feel a touch warmer, and cool hues (blues, greens) a touch cooler, at the same actual temperature. People in a blue-toned room will, on average, report feeling slightly colder than the same people in a warm-toned one. The effect shows up in studies more reliably than most colour claims.
But hold two honest caveats. First, the effect is small - we are talking about a perceptual nudge of perhaps a degree or so in how warm the air feels, not a replacement for heating or cooling. You cannot paint your way out of a badly ventilated west-facing room in a Chennai summer; the physics of solar gain and air temperature dwarf the colour nudge. Second, it is entwined with light - warm and cool here mean warm and cool light as much as paint, and a warm-white lamp does more to make a room feel cosy than a warm wall does.
Where the effect earns its keep is at the margins, as a tuning tool. A north-facing room in a cool climate that gets thin, bluish daylight can be made to feel less chilly with warmer wall tones and warm-white light - a real, if gentle, improvement in comfort. A hot, glaring room can be settled slightly with cooler, receding tones. This connects to the advancing/receding behaviour of warm and cool colours you met in Module 1: warm advances and energises, cool recedes and settles, and the temperature feeling rides along with that.

The designer's move is to treat colour temperature as one comfort input among several - orientation, ventilation, glazing, light colour and paint - and to combine them. Colour pulling the same direction as light and layout gives a comfort result you can feel; colour alone, fighting the physics, does not.
Warm hues feel a touch warmer, cool a touch cooler - a real but gentle nudge. It rides on the light. Never a substitute for heating/cooling.
Appetite and the red-restaurant myth
'Red makes you eat more' is the colour-behaviour claim most likely to appear in a brief, and it is largely folklore. There is no reliable evidence that painting a dining room red makes people hungrier or makes them eat more. The idea has been repeated so often it feels true, but it does not hold up - appetite is driven by hunger, food, smell, company and time of day far more than by wall colour.
What is genuinely true is smaller and about the food, not the room. Colour strongly affects how we judge food and drink themselves: the colour of the food, the plate and the packaging changes expected flavour, perceived sweetness and appeal - a drink dyed a different colour is tasted as a different flavour. That is a real, replicated effect, and it belongs to product and plating, not wall paint. It is why chefs plate on contrasting crockery and why food brands agonise over packet colour.
For the room itself, colour works on atmosphere and behaviour patterns, honestly scoped. Warm, dim, muted rooms encourage people to relax and linger - useful for a fine-dining restaurant that wants long, high-spend evenings. Bright, high-contrast, high-chroma rooms feel energetic and encourage faster turnover - which is why fast-food interiors historically leaned on bright reds and yellows, not to stoke appetite but to keep tables turning. The colour is shaping dwell time and mood, not directly the amount eaten.
So the honest brief for a restaurant is not 'red for appetite'. It is: what behaviour does this place want - lingering or turnover - and what atmosphere supports it, with colour, light and layout together? Then colour is used for arousal and mood (Lesson 2.1) and for cultural warmth (Lesson 2.2), and the food is plated to look its best against its setting. That is a real, defensible use of colour in a dining space, and it quietly outperforms the myth it replaces.
Focus, calm, and the 'blue boosts productivity' problem
'Blue boosts productivity' is the office equivalent of the red-restaurant myth, and it deserves the same scepticism. The evidence that a wall colour reliably raises work output is thin and inconsistent; studies conflict, effects are tiny, and they rarely survive real-world conditions. Productivity in an office is dominated by lighting quality, glare, noise, air, ergonomics, task design and management - colour is a bit-player, and any honest designer says so.
That said, two more modest effects are worth respecting. First, arousal again (Lesson 2.1): a highly saturated, high-contrast, visually busy environment is more stimulating and can be more distracting for sustained concentration, while calmer, lower-chroma surroundings are easier to settle into. So for deep-focus spaces - a study, a reading room, a quiet work zone - the useful move is not 'paint it blue' but 'keep it calm': muted, low-contrast, unfussy, so the room does not compete for attention. For spaces that want energy and interaction - a brainstorming room, a childs activity area - more colour and contrast can genuinely help lift the mood.
Second, calm and restoration have real grounding, mostly through nature and light rather than a magic hue. Views of greenery, natural materials and good daylight are repeatedly linked to lower stress and better recovery of attention - the biophilic thread we pick up fully in Lesson 2.4. The muted greens and earth tones that read as calming do so partly because they carry those natural associations and partly because they are, again, low in chroma.
The pattern across all of this is now familiar: the reliable variables are arousal (via chroma and contrast) and association (via nature and culture), not specific productivity-boosting or focus-boosting hues. Design the calm or the energy the task needs, support it with light and layout, and describe the effect honestly as a supporting nudge. That is far more credible - and more effective - than promising a client that a colour will make their team work harder.
A ladder of confidence: scoping any colour claim
The real skill this lesson builds is not four facts about four behaviours; it is a way of weighing any colour-behaviour claim you meet - in a brief, a blog, a sales pitch or your own head. Put every claim on a ladder of confidence.
At the top, well-supported and useful: saturation and contrast drive arousal (calmer rooms settle, vivid rooms stimulate); warm and cool nudge perceived temperature and advance/recede in space; food and packaging colour change how flavour is judged; nature views, daylight and greenery aid calm and restoration. These you can design with and defend.
In the middle, real but small and context-bound: warm dim rooms encourage lingering, bright rooms encourage turnover; a calm palette helps sustained focus. True on average, easily swamped, worth using but not overselling.
At the bottom, weak or myth: red makes you eat more; blue makes you more productive; a specific hue reliably makes everyone calmer, happier or smarter by itself. Repeat none of these as fact.
When you meet a new claim, ask four questions: How big is the effect (a nudge or a lever)? How context-dependent (does it need particular light, culture, task)? What is really doing the work - the hue, or chroma, contrast, light or association? And who says so - a controlled finding, or a repeated line with no source? Most bold colour-behaviour claims shrink dramatically under those four questions, and what is left is genuinely useful.
This honesty is not a weakness in your practice - it is your credibility. A designer who says 'colour will nudge this, and here is how, but light and layout do the heavy lifting' is worth ten who promise a red wall will fill the restaurant. Clients trust calibrated confidence, and calibrated confidence delivers.

- 1In a restaurant or cafe, note the wall colour, the light, the seating and the pace. Ask yourself: is the colour making people eat, or is it shaping how long they stay? Record what is really driving the behaviour.
- 2In a workspace, list everything affecting focus - light, noise, screens, layout, colour. Rank them by impact. Notice where wall colour actually sits in that ranking.
- 3In a room that feels calm, name why: is it the hue, or is it low chroma, soft light, a view of greenery, quiet? Separate the colour's share from the rest.
- 4Take the four claims - warm/cool temperature, red-for-appetite, blue-for-productivity, colour-for-calm - and place each on a three-rung ladder: well-supported / real-but-small / myth. Justify each placement in one line.
- 5Write the honest sentence you would say to a client for each of the three rooms - the nudge colour offers, and what actually does the heavy lifting.

At building scale, colour's behavioural effects are real but easily overwhelmed by physics and use - so scope them honestly and let them ride with the bigger moves. Warm and cool surfaces nudge perceived temperature and can advance or recede a facade or a large interior, but orientation, glazing, ventilation and material do the real environmental work. Use colour to reinforce the atmosphere a space is meant to hold - civic calm, market energy - not to carry a behavioural promise it cannot keep at scale.
This lesson is your shield against the client brief that arrives pre-loaded with myths. When someone asks for 'a red dining room for appetite' or 'a blue office for focus', redirect to what colour actually does: set arousal with chroma and contrast, tune perceived warmth to the room's light and orientation, and shape dwell time and mood. Design calm spaces low and muted, lively spaces brighter, and always pair colour with light and layout. Promise the nudge, not the miracle, and your results - and your reputation - hold up.
Collect colour-behaviour claims and put each on the ladder of confidence - it is the single most professional habit in this whole module. For every 'colour X does Y' you meet, ask how big, how context-bound, what is really doing the work, and who says so. You will quickly sort the well-supported (arousal, perceived temperature, food colour, nature and calm) from the folklore (red for hunger, blue for productivity). That calibrated scepticism will make you the person in a studio who actually knows what colour can do.
