
Google Home Smart Curtains: Setup & Routines (India 2026)
What "works with Google Home" really requires — Wi-Fi vs hub, linking the maker's app, voice commands, Google Routines, Nest sensors, and the honest cloud and Wi-Fi caveats nobody mentions.
You have already decided to motorise a curtain or two, and you live in a Google household — an Android phone, maybe a Nest Mini on the kitchen counter, "Hey Google" already part of the family vocabulary. The natural next step is to say "Hey Google, open the living room curtains" and watch them glide back. It can absolutely work that smoothly. But the gap between the marketing phrase "works with Google Home" and a curtain that reliably answers your voice is wider than most showrooms admit, and almost all of that gap is about how the curtain reaches the internet.

It is deliberately agnostic about which curtain maker you buy — the steps below apply whether your motor is a battery-powered retrofit or a wired track. What it is not agnostic about is the honest caveats, because Google Home has a few that bite Indian homes specifically.
"Works with Google Home" is a sentence about software, not hardware. It tells you the curtain can be controlled by Google — it does not tell you how reliably, whether the cloud is involved, or whether your Wi-Fi is up to the job.
What "works with Google Home" actually requires
For a curtain to obey Google Assistant, three things must be true. Skip any one and "Hey Google" returns "Sorry, I didn't understand."
- A motor with a smart radio — the motor must talk Wi-Fi, or talk to a hub that does. A plain remote-only motor will never reach Google, no matter how good it is.
- A bridge into Google's ecosystem — either the maker's cloud is linked to your Google account, or the device joins Google's local Matter fabric. One of these has to exist.
- The Google Home app — the single app where the curtain appears as a controllable device, gets assigned to a room, and is wired into Routines.

Wi-Fi vs a hub: the decision that shapes everything
There are two ways a curtain reaches Google, and they behave very differently in a real Indian flat.

A direct Wi-Fi motor is the cheapest way to start and needs no extra box, but every motor sits on your router as its own client. Put eight Wi-Fi curtains, plugs and bulbs on a budget ISP router and you will meet its device limit fast — drop-offs and "device unavailable" errors follow. A hub-based motor (Zigbee or the maker's own RF) keeps the curtains off Wi-Fi entirely and is the more robust choice for a whole-home job. One India-specific trap: almost every Wi-Fi curtain motor is 2.4 GHz only. If your phone is locked to the 5 GHz band on a dual-band router, pairing fails silently. Temporarily separate the bands or use the 2.4 GHz SSID during setup.
Step by step: linking the maker's app to Google Home
The setup order matters. Do it in this sequence and it rarely goes wrong.
1. Set up the curtain in the maker's own app first. Pair the motor, set the open and close limits (the end-points), and confirm the curtain moves fully from the maker's app. Google never bypasses this step.
2. Open the Google Home app, tap + Add → Set up device → Works with Google.
3. Find the maker's brand in the list and sign in with the same account you used in the maker's app. This "links" the two clouds — this is the bridge.
4. Assign the curtain to a room (Living Room, Master Bedroom). Rooms are what make "open the bedroom curtains" work without naming the device.
5. Rename the device to something you would actually say — "living room curtains", not "Motor_A1". Assistant matches your words to this name.
6. For a Matter curtain, skip the brand list: tap + Add → Matter-enabled device and scan the Matter QR code instead — no cloud link needed.

Voice commands that actually work
Once linked, Assistant understands a small, reliable vocabulary. Most curtain motors expose as an "open/close" or "blinds" trait:
- "Hey Google, open the living room curtains."
- "Hey Google, close the bedroom curtains."
- "Hey Google, set the study curtains to 50 percent" — only if the motor reports position; many cheaper Wi-Fi motors are open/close only and will ignore percentages.
- "Hey Google, open all the curtains" — works if you have grouped them.
The percentage caveat is worth repeating: if precise positioning matters to you (half-open for glare control on a work-from-home screen wall), confirm the motor supports position reporting before buying, not after.
Google Routines: where it stops being a gimmick
Voice is convenient; Routines are where curtains start earning their keep. A Routine is an automation built in the Google Home app under Automations, triggered by a time, a voice phrase, sunrise/sunset, or a Nest sensor.
- Sunrise wake — at sunrise (or 6:45 am on weekdays), open the bedroom sheers gently. A kinder alarm than a buzzer.
- Afternoon heat shield — at 2 pm, close the west-facing living-room curtains against the brutal afternoon sun while you are out. This is a genuine comfort and cooling-load saving, not a toy — see the smart curtains energy logic.
- "Good night" scene — the phrase "Hey Google, good night" closes all curtains, dims lights and locks up in one breath.
- Leaving home — tie curtain-close to your phone leaving the house for a privacy-and-heat routine.

Nest integration: sensors and screens
If you already own Nest hardware, it deepens the setup. A Nest Hub with a screen lets you drag a curtain to any position by touch and acts as a Matter controller for local control. A Nest temperature or motion sensor can trigger a Routine — close the curtains when a room crosses a temperature, or open them when someone walks in. None of this is required; it is the layer that makes a Google household feel cohesive rather than a pile of separate gadgets.

The honest cloud and Wi-Fi caveats
Two truths Google-Home marketing glosses over, and both matter more in India than elsewhere.
The cloud dependency. A direct Wi-Fi motor's voice control usually routes your home → maker's cloud → Google's cloud → back. When broadband drops — and in many Indian neighbourhoods it does — voice control dies with it, even though the curtain is two metres away. If the maker ever shuts down its servers, a cloud-only motor can be bricked. Matter and local hubs are the antidote: they keep control inside your house. The Wi-Fi load. Indian homes often run a single modest ISP router. Each Wi-Fi curtain is one more permanent client competing for it. Plan the whole smart home, not one curtain — past roughly a dozen Wi-Fi devices on a basic router, reliability falls off a cliff. A hub solves this elegantly.
