What it's made of
  • side-wall recessed niche
  • teak ledge surround
  • warm picture light
  • slim agarbatti holder

Many duplex owners are tempted to place a mandir under the staircase, which Vastu cautions against, so this design moves the shrine to a recessed niche in the side wall beside the stairs instead. A teak-framed ledge and a warm picture light make the landing wall a small place of pause on the way up. It suits villas, row houses and duplex flats with a staircase in the living area. Choose a side wall near the north-east, orient the idol east, keep an agarbatti holder rather than a large enclosed flame in the passage, and avoid the space directly beneath the steps. You can switch finishes to compare looks before deciding.
