Wayfinding for Everyone
The best wayfinding is a building you can read without instructions - clear layout, memorable landmarks, honest sightlines and information repeated across the senses, so no one is lost because they cannot see, hear or read one particular cue
If a building needs a sign at every turn to be usable, its wayfinding has already failed.
Think of the last time you were badly lost in a building - a sprawling hospital, an airport, a government office, a shopping centre. You probably did not lack signs; you were most likely drowning in them, a wall of arrows pointing everywhere and nowhere. Now imagine navigating that same place unable to read the signs, or unable to hear the announcement, or unable to hold a complex route in mind. Wayfinding is not a signage problem, though signs are part of it. It is the deeper question of whether a person can build a mental map of where they are, where they want to go, and how to get there - using whatever senses and abilities they have.
The best wayfinding is a building that is legible in itself: a clear, logical layout, memorable landmarks, honest sightlines to your destination, and the key information repeated across sight, sound and touch so no one is stranded because a single cue was missed. This lesson builds that from the ground up - first the architecture that makes a place understandable, then the layered, multi-sensory information that guides the widest range of people, including those who cannot see a sign, hear a voice, or read the local language.
Where am I? Where can I go? Which way is mine? Answer all three at every junction.
Legibility first - design the plan, not just the signs
Signage is the last layer of wayfinding, not the first, and reaching for it early is the classic mistake. A confusing building smothered in signs is still a confusing building; a legible one needs very few. So the first move is to make the architecture itself tell people where they are and where to go - what planners call legibility.
Legibility starts with a clear, logical layout. People navigate best when the plan has an understandable structure they can hold in their heads: a simple hierarchy of main routes and side routes, a consistent logic to how spaces are arranged and numbered, and a shape that reveals itself as you move through it rather than a maze of identical corridors meeting at odd angles. A spine with rooms off it, a loop around a central court, a stack of identical floors reached from one obvious core - these are legible because they are predictable. When you can guess where something probably is, you are already half-oriented. Consistency across floors matters especially: if the lift, the stair and the toilets sit in the same place on every level, a person learns the building once and knows it everywhere.
Sightlines are the next tool and one of the most powerful. If a person can see their next destination - or the desk, the stair, the exit, the daylight beyond it - they need no sign to head towards it. Design so that from each key decision point the onward choices are visible: a reception desk you see the moment you enter, a stair you glimpse from the door, a route to the light. Conversely, hidden lifts, blind corners and destinations tucked out of view force reliance on signage and memory, which excludes the people least able to use them. Natural light is a wayfinding device in its own right - people move instinctively towards it, and a well-placed window at the end of a route both orients and reassures. Get the plan and the sightlines right, and every later cue has far less work to do.
If you can SEE where to go, you don't need a sign. Design sightlines to the destination first.
Landmarks, decision points and a clear route
Even a legible plan needs anchors, and here two ideas do most of the work: landmarks and decision points. Human beings navigate by memorable features far more than by abstract directions - we remember 'turn at the big red artwork' long after we have forgotten 'take the second left'. So give a building distinctive, memorable landmarks at the points where they help: a bold piece of art, a striking planting, a coloured wall, a sculptural stair, a courtyard. Landmarks work best when they are genuinely distinctive from one another (a building where every floor and lobby looks identical is a building with no landmarks, which is why so many car parks and hospitals feel impossible), when they are visible from a distance, and when they are permanent - a landmark that moves or is seasonal cannot be relied upon.
The places landmarks and information matter most are decision points: the spots where a person must choose - the entrance, each junction, the lift lobby, the point where a route branches. Good wayfinding concentrates its effort exactly there, and stays quiet in between. At each decision point a person needs to be able to answer three questions: Where am I? Where can I go from here? Which way is my destination? Provide the answer clearly at that spot - through sightlines where possible, and through well-placed information where not - and the journey resolves into a series of small, confident choices rather than one overwhelming puzzle. A common failure is to load the entrance with everything and then abandon people at the junctions deep inside, exactly where they are most likely to go wrong.
Think of the whole thing as a continuous route, mirroring the accessible-route idea from Module 1: the wayfinding chain is only as strong as its weakest link. A perfect entrance sign is useless if the trail goes cold at the third corner. Walk the entire journey from arrival to destination and back, at every decision point asking those three questions, and you will find the gaps where a person - especially one who cannot fall back on reading a distant sign - would hesitate, guess, or give up. Keep the route confirmed, so people know not only where to turn but that they are still on the right path, and provide a graceful way to recover when someone does go wrong.
Say it in more than one sense - redundancy
Now the information layer, and here is the principle that makes wayfinding truly for everyone: redundancy across the senses. Any single channel excludes someone. A visual sign is invisible to a blind person and useless to someone who cannot read the language or has left their glasses at home. An audio announcement is lost on a deaf person and drowned in a noisy concourse. A tactile map serves a cane user but not a wheelchair user reaching from a seated height, and helps no one who does not know it is there. The answer is not to pick the 'best' channel but to provide the important information in several at once, so each person can use whichever works for them in that moment.
In practice this means layering. Visual: clear, high-contrast, well-sized, well-lit signs and maps, in plain language and supported by internationally understood symbols so they work across literacy and language (Lesson 1.4 covers accessible signage in detail; Lesson 5.1 the contrast and size behind it). Tactile: tactile and Braille signage at key points and consistent findable heights, tactile maps at entrances, and the tactile-paving and cue vocabulary from Lesson 5.2 guiding and warning underfoot and to the hand. Audible: clear spoken announcements, talking signs or beacons, and increasingly digital audio wayfinding through a phone. Underfoot and architectural: the changes in surface, light and space that quietly signal 'something is different here'. And crucially, the built-in redundancy of a legible plan and strong landmarks described above, which lets people navigate by the building itself when every explicit cue fails.
The test of good multi-sensory wayfinding is a thought experiment worth running on every project: could a person find their way if any one sense were switched off? Could a blind person reach the accessible toilet? Could a deaf person catch a platform change? Could someone who reads no English, or reads nothing at all, still get to the exit? If the honest answer to any of these is no, the wayfinding depends on a single fragile channel, and the fix is to add a redundant one. Say everything important more than one way, and you build a place people of the whole spectrum of ability can move through with the ordinary dignity of not being lost.
Could you still find the toilet if one sense were switched off? If not, add a redundant cue.
Simplicity, consistency and the cognitive load
The last piece is the easiest to say and the hardest to hold to: keep it simple, keep it consistent, and respect people's cognitive load. Wayfinding is not only a sensory task but a thinking task, and every person navigating a building is spending mental effort - effort that is scarcer for someone anxious, in pain, in a hurry, older, or with a cognitive or neurodiverse condition, and that this module's sister Module 6 explores in depth. The kinder the wayfinding is to that limited budget, the more people it serves.
Simplicity means saying only what is needed, where it is needed. The over-signed building fails not because it lacks information but because it drowns the vital message in noise - fifteen arrows where one would do, competing systems from different eras, temporary notices taped over permanent ones. Prune ruthlessly: at each decision point, show the few destinations that matter there and hide the rest. Use plain, everyday language and consistent terms - if a place is called 'Outpatients' on one sign it must not be 'OPD' on the next and 'Clinic B' on the third, because to a stressed or unfamiliar reader those are three different places. Prefer positive, direct instructions ('Lifts this way') over negative or conditional ones, and support words with clear, standard symbols so meaning survives language and literacy gaps.
Consistency ties it all together and is where many systems quietly fail as buildings age and change. The same information should look the same, sit in the same kind of place, and use the same words throughout - so a person learns the system once and trusts it everywhere. This is also a management duty as much as a design one: the most beautiful wayfinding scheme decays the moment a department is renamed, a route is closed for works, or a well-meaning notice is taped to the glass, and it needs an owner who keeps it honest. Design the system to be simple enough to maintain, consistent enough to learn, and legible enough that when the signs do fail - and one day they will - the building itself still guides people home. That is wayfinding for everyone: not a cleverer sign, but a place that makes sense.

Workshop - walk a route as three different people
Wayfinding reveals itself in the journey, not the floor plan. In this exercise you walk a real, complex building as three people with different abilities and map exactly where it fails each of them.
A large building you can walk freely, a notebook or phone to map the route and decision points, and a partner to keep you safe if you walk any part with eyes closed.

- 1Choose a real destination inside a large building (say, a specific clinic or a particular shop) and walk to it from the entrance, marking every decision point - each place you had to choose a direction.
- 2At each decision point, answer the three questions honestly: could you tell where you were, where you could go, and which way your destination lay? Note what answered them - a sightline, a landmark, a sign - or what was missing.
- 3Now walk it again imagining you cannot read the signs (blind or non-reader): what guides you - tactile cues, sound, landmarks, surface changes - and where does the trail go cold?
- 4Walk it a third time as someone who cannot hear announcements and is anxious and rushed: where does noise, clutter, inconsistent naming or a hidden destination defeat you?
- 5Map the failures onto the route and, for the three worst, write the fix - and say whether it is a plan fix (sightline, landmark, layout) or an information fix (sign, tactile, audible, plain wording).

Wayfinding is a planning and massing responsibility long before it is a signage package. The legibility of the plan, the clarity of the circulation hierarchy, the sightlines from each decision point, the consistent stacking of cores and toilets, the daylight drawing people through - these are yours, set in the first sketches, and no signage budget can rescue a genuinely confusing plan. Design the building to be read without instructions, place landmarks where routes decide, and walk the whole journey testing the three questions at every junction. Then coordinate the sign, tactile and audible layers onto a plan that already makes sense.
You make the legible plan actually legible at human scale - through landmarks, contrast, light and the information layer people read. Distinctive finishes, art and colour give each area a memorable identity; contrast and lighting make signs and edges visible; consistent, plain, well-placed signage at decision points guides without clutter. Provide tactile and Braille signage at findable heights, keep terminology and placement consistent room to room, and prune the visual noise. The felt experience of not being lost - of a building that quietly tells you where you are - is largely built from the interior decisions you control.
Train yourself to navigate as different people would, and to design the plan before the signs. Next time you are lost, diagnose why: a hidden destination, identical corridors, no landmark, a cold trail at the junctions, a single fragile cue. Practise the test - could you find your way with one sense switched off? Sketch buildings as routes and decision points, not just rooms, and put a landmark and a sightline where each choice happens. Build the instinct that legibility is designed into the plan, and signage only finishes what good architecture has already made clear.
