Immersion earns its place only against something - and for most of a working week, that something is the humble, fast, precise, universal screen and drawing. Here is when the flat tool simply wins.
The whole course has said immersion must earn its place. This lesson is where that promise gets specific and unsentimental: a plain catalogue of the many everyday design tasks where a flat screen or a drawing is simply the better tool, and putting on a headset would be slower, clumsier and worse. It is not a retreat from spatial computing - it is the other half of using it well. A tool you reach for indiscriminately is a tool you do not understand.
The strongest immersive practitioners are exactly the ones who can say, quickly and without guilt, "not for this - open the drawing." A drawing is a shared artefact that lives in the open; an immersive experience is a private, momentary, hardware-locked event. You cannot post a walkthrough to a site engineer's pocket, staple it into a contract, or submit it for statutory approval. For the entire apparatus of documenting, approving and building, the drawing is not just better - it is the only thing that works, and it remains the source of truth to which immersion always defers.
The second is sharing and collaboration at zero friction. The plainest test of a communication tool is how many people can receive it, how fast, on what they already own. A screenshot, a PDF, a render, a marked-up plan reaches everyone instantly - on a phone on a train, on a site laptop, in an email to a client in another city or another country - and they can respond in seconds. An immersive review requires each participant to have a headset, to put it on, to be in a fit state to use it, and usually to be in the same coordinated session. That is a high bar for a quick opinion. For most day-to-day coordination and sign-off, the flat, universal, asynchronous artefact wins on reach alone. This is doubly true in the Indian context, where a distributed team, a diaspora client, or a consultant on a phone is the normal case, not the exception: a drawing or a render reaches all of them today, on the devices in their hands, while an all-in-headset session reaches almost none of them. Immersion is a powerful channel for the people who are equipped and present; the flat artefact is the channel for everyone else, which is to say, for most of the work.
A two-question go/no-go you can run in seconds
It helps to convert all this into a fast, honest go/no-go test you can run on any task in a few seconds, because the point is not to memorise a list but to build the reflex. The test has two questions. First: does this task genuinely need spatial understanding at true scale, or presence in the space? If the value of the task lives in how the space *feels* to a body - whether a corridor is oppressive, whether a ceiling is generous, whether a client can finally grasp their kitchen - then immersion has something real to offer and is worth its overhead. If the value lives in exactness, text, documentation, speed or reach, it does not. Second: what is the overhead, and who is excluded? Even when immersion could help, it costs model-preparation time, hardware, comfort and the people who cannot or will not use a headset; if a screen or drawing gets you a good-enough result without that overhead, the screen wins by default.
Run those two questions and the everyday tasks sort themselves cleanly. That is not a criticism of spatial computing; it is what mature use of a specialised tool looks like. A scalpel is not a lesser tool than a table knife because you use it rarely - it is a precise tool for a precise moment, and so is immersion. The skill is the diagnosis: this task, this moment - drawing, screen, or headset? Answer it honestly every time and you are using the whole toolkit well.
Resisting the pull to show off with a headset
One temptation remains to name and resist: using immersion to show off rather than to help. Because a headset is impressive, there is a pull to reach for it precisely when it adds the least - a needless VR tour of a scheme the client already understands from a plan, a headset demo in a pitch that exists to signal that the studio is cutting-edge, an immersive presentation of information that a single clear drawing would have conveyed faster and to more people. This is the spatial-washing of the last-but-one lesson, seen from the inside: the immersive word or gesture doing work that a concrete benefit should do. It is a real temptation because it often works as theatre in the short term, and it is a trap because it trains the studio and the client to value the spectacle over the understanding, and it wastes the tool's credibility on occasions where a screen was better.
The discipline is to let the task, never the tool's impressiveness, decide - and to be willing to say, in a room where everyone expects the headset, "a drawing is clearer here, let me show you." That takes a small amount of courage, and it is exactly the courage that marks a serious practitioner. The client who is shown the humble, faster, clearer flat artefact when it is the right tool, and the immersive review only when it genuinely reveals something a drawing hid, learns to trust the studio's judgement - which is worth far more than the momentary wow of a gratuitous VR tour. Immersion used sparingly and only where it earns its place stays powerful precisely because it is not squandered.

The screen and the drawing are not the past that immersion replaces; they are the fast, precise, universal, legal backbone of design practice, and they do the overwhelming majority of the work superbly.
