The hook

For centuries the drawing was the design and the model was a byproduct. Spatial computing helps complete a quiet reversal: the model becomes the medium, and the drawing becomes a view of it.

Step back from the individual uses across the design process - concept study, coordination review, client walkthrough - and a single deeper shift comes into focus. In all of them, the thing everyone is gathering around, working in, and communicating through is the three-dimensional model. Not the drawings extracted from it - the model itself. This is a genuine change in what design is made of. For most of the history of the profession, the drawing was the design: architects designed by drawing, the set of drawings was the deliverable, and any three-dimensional model was a byproduct - a presentation object, or a thing you built to check something. The drawing was the medium; the model, if it existed, was secondary.

Spatial computing is one of the forces helping complete a long reversal of that relationship. As building information modelling made the coordinated 3D model the working heart of the project, and as immersion made it something you can step inside and share, the model has increasingly become the medium of design - the primary shared thing that concept, coordination and communication all happen in - while the drawings become one of several views drawn from it. This is a real and consequential shift, and worth understanding clearly. But it comes with a caveat this course will not let go of: becoming the shared medium of design is not the same as becoming the source of truth. The drawings remain the precise, dimensioned, signed, shareable, legal record of the building - and this final lesson holds both truths at once.

Old: drawing = the design, model = byproduct. Now: model = the medium, drawings/renders/immersion = views of it. But medium =/= source of truth. Drawings stay precise, legal, shareable - the record.

The shift: the model becomes the shared medium

To see the shift clearly, name what a medium is: the primary material a discipline works in and thinks through. Painters work in paint, writers in language - and for centuries architects worked in drawing. The drawing was not merely how a design was recorded; it was how it was thought, developed and communicated, the very substance of the design act. A three-dimensional model, when one existed, was downstream of that: a physical study model, or later a computer model, was something you made from the design to present it or to check it, not the place the design lived. The drawing was the medium and the deliverable; the model was a byproduct.

That relationship has been quietly reversing for a generation, and spatial computing is part of what completes it. The decisive move was building information modelling: once the coordinated three-dimensional model became the shared database at the heart of a project - the thing every discipline contributes to and works against - the model became the primary object of design, and the drawings became outputs generated from it. Spatial computing extends this by making the model not just a database you edit on screen but a space you can enter, review and share - so concept study happens in the model, coordination happens in the model, and client communication happens in the model. The figure captures the new arrangement: the 3D model sits at the centre as the shared medium, and drawings, renders, immersive review and even fabrication data are all views drawn from that one model. This is what "the model as the medium" means - not that drawings disappear, but that the centre of gravity has moved. The design now lives in the model; the drawings are one of the things you take from it. From drawings-as-product to model-as-medium

The practical texture of this shift is a change in what the team treats as primary. In a drawings-as-product world, the drawings are the design: they are edited directly, coordinated by overlaying them, checked against each other, and issued as the deliverable, with any model a side artefact. In a model-as-medium world, the model is primary: the team designs and coordinates in the shared three-dimensional model, and the drawings are generated as views from it - a plan is a horizontal cut through the model, a section a vertical one, a schedule a query against its data. Change the model and the drawings update; the drawings become consistent views of a single coordinated source rather than a set of separate documents that must be manually kept in agreement. This is a more coherent and less error-prone way to work, and it is already the reality in much of contemporary practice through BIM.

Spatial computing deepens the shift by adding immersion as another view drawn from the same model. Just as a plan is a flat cut and a render is a frozen photograph, an immersive walkthrough is a true-scale, inhabitable view of the identical model - one more way of drawing understanding out of the shared medium, aimed at the questions the flat views cannot answer. This is why the module's uses fit together so naturally: they are all the same model, viewed different ways for different purposes - dimensioned drawings for building, renders for image, immersion for felt spatial understanding and communication. The value of a genuine model-centred process is real: consistency, fewer coordination errors, a single shared thing the whole team and the client can gather around, and the ability to serve each audience the view that suits them. But hold the honesty. Making the model the medium does not make every view equally authoritative. The immersive view is superb for understanding and communicating the space and poor as a source of dimensions; the drawing view is precise, dimensioned and legally meaningful. The shift changes how the team works together and what they work in - it does not flatten the differences between the views, and it does not, on its own, change which view is binding.

Implications for practice and collaboration

Treating the model as the medium changes how a practice works, and the implications are worth naming because they are already reshaping the profession. Collaboration becomes model-centred: instead of exchanging and reconciling separate drawing sets, disciplines contribute to and work against a shared coordinated model, which is more coherent and reduces the errors that come from documents drifting out of agreement. Communication becomes multi-view: from the one model, the team can serve a builder dimensioned drawings, a client an immersive walkthrough, a committee a render, and a fabricator data - each audience the view that suits them, all consistent because they come from the same source. Remote collaboration becomes more natural, which matters especially for India's distributed teams and diaspora clients: people in different cities can meet in, and around, the same model. And the model becomes a through-line across the whole life of the project, from concept to coordination to communication and on toward construction, rather than a thing remade at each stage.

But the implications include real demands and real risks, and honesty requires naming them. A model-centred process depends on disciplined model management - clear ownership, versioning, and agreement on what the model does and does not represent - or the shared medium becomes a shared mess. It demands new skills and investment that not every practice, especially smaller or cost-sensitive ones, can readily make. And it carries a specific danger this course has flagged from the start: the more central and convincing the model becomes, the easier it is to mistake it for the source of truth - to trust a measurement taken off the model, or a felt impression from the headset, as if it were verified. The model being the medium of design does not make it the arbiter of binding fact. The competent practice embraces the coherence of working in a shared model while keeping crystal clear which view is authoritative for which purpose - and never letting the persuasiveness of an immersive, model-centred process erode the discipline of verifying binding results against the drawings, the measured survey, the codes and the responsible specialists. The medium has changed; the need to know where truth actually lives has not.

The honest caveat: drawings remain the precise, legal record

The lesson, and with it the module, closes on the caveat that anchors everything: becoming the shared medium of design is not the same as becoming the source of truth, and drawings remain the precise, legal, shareable record of the building. This is not nostalgia or resistance to change - it is a clear-eyed recognition of what drawings still do that the model-as-experienced does not. Drawings are precise and dimensioned: they state exact sizes, positions and specifications that a felt immersive impression never can, and that a model must have extracted and checked to be trusted. They are the legal and contractual record: it is the drawings and specifications, signed and issued, that define what is to be built, that the contract references, that permissions are granted against, and that everyone is held to - not a headset session and not a walkthrough. And they are shareable without hardware: a drawing can be printed, emailed, marked up on site in the rain, read by a builder with no headset and no powerful computer, and understood by anyone in the chain - a robustness the immersive model does not have.

So the mature position holds both truths at once, exactly as the figure frames them. The model is increasingly the medium - the shared thing the team designs in, coordinates in and communicates through, and the immersive view of it is a genuinely powerful way to understand and agree on space. And the drawings remain the record - the precise, dimensioned, legal, shareable statement of what will actually be built, and the thing binding results are verified against. Spatial computing sits comfortably inside this: it is one of the most valuable ways to work in and communicate through the shared model, precisely because it is honest about being a medium for seeing, understanding and communicating - never a source of truth. The whole course lands here. The computer has left the screen and the model has become the medium of design, which is a real and exciting shift; but the discipline that makes it safe and useful is unchanged - make immersion earn its place task by task, treat the model as a powerful medium and the headset as a tool for understanding, and keep the binding truth where it belongs: with the verified drawings and survey data, the codes including the National Building Code of India, and the qualified engineers and surveyors who own it.
