Moving through a virtual building under your own control is where VR earns its keep for design - but only if you solve the unglamorous question of how a standing body travels through a large space without losing its way or its lunch

The moment you can walk through your own building, a new problem appears: how does a person standing still in a small room travel through a large space without feeling sick?

An immersive walkthrough sounds like the easy, obvious payoff of VR - put on a headset, and stroll through the building you designed. And when it works, it is genuinely revelatory: space unfolds in sequence the way real architecture does, the designer reads their own scheme from the inside, the client understands their future home without a single plan. This is the core move of virtual reality for design, the thing everything else in this module builds on.

But the walkthrough hides an awkward truth that decides whether it delights or nauseates: your real body is standing in a bedroom or sitting in an office chair while your virtual body is walking through a mansion, and your eyes and your inner ear are about to disagree. How you move through a virtual building - the design of locomotion - is not a technical footnote; it is the single biggest factor in whether the experience is comfortable and clear or dizzying and confusing. This lesson takes the walkthrough seriously as a craft: what it reveals, the teleport-versus-smooth choice at its heart, how to make it legible and comfortable, and the honest judgement of when it beats a screen and when it does not.

Navigating: teleport versus smooth locomotion

Two families of locomotion dominate, and the choice between them is the central comfort decision of any immersive walkthrough. The first is teleport locomotion: you point to a spot on the floor, trigger, and are instantly relocated there - no continuous motion, so no mismatch between seen movement and felt stillness, and therefore very little nausea. It is the safest default, especially for first-time users and clients, because almost nobody gets sick from it. The honest practical guidance is: default to teleport for anyone new or for a client presentation where the last thing you want is a nauseated stakeholder, and offer smooth locomotion as an option for experienced users who tolerate it and who need the continuity of the sequence for a genuine design judgement. Many good tools let each person choose, and let them turn on comfort aids. The deeper point is that *there is no neutral way to move in VR* - every locomotion scheme is a trade between comfort and continuity, and a spatially literate designer chooses deliberately based on who is in the headset and what the walkthrough is for, rather than accepting a default and blaming the medium when someone feels ill. Making it legible and comfortable

Beyond locomotion, an immersive walkthrough has to be made legible - easy to understand and navigate - or the freedom of VR becomes disorientation. Real buildings are legible partly because we arrive at them oriented, with daylight, landmarks and long-learned cues; drop someone cold into the middle of a virtual building and they can quickly lose which way is out. Several simple craft moves fix this. Start people at a natural, oriented entry point - the front door, not the middle of a room - so the sequence begins where the building intends. Keep the scale honestly set (correct eye height and model units) so proportions read true; a walkthrough at the wrong scale silently misleads everyone in it. Give clear wayfinding: a sensible route, visible daylight and openings pulling the eye onward, and avoid mazes of identical corridors with no landmarks.

Comfort is the other half of legibility, because a person fighting nausea or fatigue cannot judge design. Keep sessions short - the honest comfortable window for most people is minutes, not an hour - and build the walkthrough as a focused route, not an open-ended wander that outlasts anyone's tolerance. Set a modest, constant movement speed; avoid stairs, ramps and lifts that move the viewpoint vertically without their body agreeing, which are notorious nausea triggers, or handle them with a teleport hop. Mind the physical reality too: the person is really standing in a room with furniture and other people, wearing a hot, heavy headset with a cable or limited battery, so keep them safe and let them stop easily. The reward for this craft is a walkthrough that does its job: the designer reads the sequence clearly and spots what is working and what is not; the client moves through their future building understanding it and forming genuine reactions rather than clutching a wall feeling queasy. None of it is exotic - it is the same hospitality you would extend to a guest walking a real site, translated into a medium that is unforgiving of carelessness. When a walkthrough earns its place - and when a screen wins

It helps to be precise about what an immersive walkthrough is genuinely good for, because that is what tells you when to build one and when to reach for something else. It is at its best when the design question is about sequence and connection - how spaces link, how the route reads, how volume and light change as you move, whether the arrival is welcoming and the journey legible. That is real, hard-to-get information: no plan, section or single render captures the felt experience of moving through a building, and both designers and clients get genuine insight from it that changes decisions and builds understanding. For a processional public space, an entrance sequence, a house organised around a route, or simply helping a first-time home-builder grasp their whole home, the walkthrough earns its place clearly.

It is weaker, and sometimes actively worse than a screen, for other things. For studying a single fixed relationship - one room's proportions, a facade elevation, a detail - a still render or an orbit on a screen is faster and involves no motion sickness. For anything measured or precise, the walkthrough tells you nothing the model does not, and tempts false confidence. For quick, collaborative, back-and-forth decisions among the team, the shared screen is usually more efficient than passing a headset around. And the preparation cost is real: a walkthrough that feels effortless took real work to export, optimise, scale correctly and make comfortable, and if that work is skimped the result - a laggy, mis-scaled, nausea-inducing wander - actively harms the design conversation rather than helping it.

So the discipline of the walkthrough mirrors the discipline of the whole course: make immersion earn its place, task by task, against the fast, proven screen and drawing. Build a walkthrough when the question is genuinely about the felt sequence of moving through space and the value of getting that right is high; use a render, an orbit or a plan when the question is a fixed view, a measured fact or a fast group decision. And carry the honest boundary through every glide: the immersive walkthrough is a superb instrument for understanding and communicating the *experience* of a building, and it is never the record of its *dimensions* - those stay with the verified BIM model, the drawings and the surveyed reality, checked by the qualified people and the governing codes, including the National Building Code of India.
