Signage is a real design discipline — environmental graphic design — that shapes how people read and move through a building, and it is planned as a signage master plan, not name-boards stuck on at the end. A sign system supports a legible building; it cannot rescue a confusing plan, where signs only multiply into clutter. There are four sign types — identification, directional, informational and regulatory — each with a distinct job, and the statutory safety signs, often the law, lead the plan.

EGD, not afterthought boards

Signage is a real design DISCIPLINE — ENVIRONMENTAL GRAPHIC DESIGN (EGD), the field of the Society for Experiential Graphic Design (SEGD) — that shapes how people read and move through a building. It is PLANNED as a signage MASTER PLAN: a coordinated system of naming, information, graphics and hardware, designed from the start alongside the architecture. 'Signage is just some name-boards stuck on at the end' is a MYTH — the afterthought approach produces the confusing, cluttered signage everyone has suffered.[1, 2]

Signs fall into four types — identification (names a place), directional (points the way), informational (details read stationary), regulatory (rules and safety). And regulatory/safety signs are often the law, so they lead the plan and are never compromised for style.[1, 3]

Each a different job

Signs fall into four TYPES, each with a distinct job. IDENTIFICATION signs name a place ('you have arrived'). DIRECTIONAL signs point the way at decision points ('this way'). INFORMATIONAL signs give details read while stationary — a directory, a map, hours. REGULATORY (statutory) signs state rules and safety — fire exit, no entry — often legally required. A good system uses each for its purpose; confusing the types (a directory where a directional sign is needed) is a common planning error.[1, 3]

Coordinated, not piecemeal

The tool that makes signage a system is the SIGNAGE MASTER PLAN: a document that sets the naming convention, the message schedule (every sign, its type, location and content), the graphic standards and the hardware family, so every sign in the building is consistent and coordinated. Planned this way, a stranger meets one coherent language throughout; assembled piecemeal, sign by sign, the building speaks in a dozen inconsistent voices and no one can trust it. Consistency IS the system.[2]

Study task

Take a public building you know — a college block, a clinic, a station — and begin its signage master plan. On a plan, mark the decision points where a stranger needs guidance, and at each note which type of sign belongs there (identification, directional, informational or regulatory). Identify the statutory safety signs (fire exits) and place them first. Then write a short message schedule for five signs — each sign’s type, location and content — and set a naming convention so the wording is consistent. Finally, note two places where the building’s plan itself should do the wayfinding, so you don’t need a sign. The test is a coordinated system that supports the building, not a scatter of boards.
