Field Research & Documentation

Systematic inquiry, not pretty photos — and participatory, not extractive

This is the studio’s core skill, and its conscience. Documenting a living craft is systematic inquiry — ethnographic observation, interviews, measured drawing, material and value-chain study — not a day of pretty photos. And it is governed by one ethic that outranks all the technique: research is participatory, not extractive. You co-produce knowledge with the maker, you get consent, you give the documentation back, and you credit people by name. The maker is a co-author, not a subject — and this unit is how you earn that relationship.

Ethnography, done ethically

The toolkit is anthropology’s: participant observation, semi-structured interviews and oral history, aiming at Geertz’s ‘thick description’. The fault line is extractive vs participatory — consent, give-back and credit are the method, not an afterthought.[1, 2]

Learn with, not just look at

Craft documentation borrows from anthropology: PARTICIPANT OBSERVATION (learning by doing alongside the maker over time), SEMI-STRUCTURED INTERVIEWS (a guide of open questions, not a fixed questionnaire) and ORAL HISTORY (recording the maker's own account of lineage, meaning and change). Clifford Geertz called the goal 'thick description' — recording not just the act but its layered meaning to insiders. Design adopted this as design ethnography: study people in their real context.[1]

Documentation

Document with measured drawing — the section reveals the construction a photo can’t — and record the process step by step, the tools, the maker’s narration, and the anthropometry of the body at the loom or wheel, plus the material and its seasonality.[3, 4]

The section reveals the making

Orthographic documentation — PLAN, SECTION and ELEVATION — of the craft object, tool, loom or dwelling is a primary record, and freehand SKETCHING captures what a camera cannot. The SECTION is uniquely valuable: it cuts through the object to expose construction, joinery and hidden layers — a wall's build-up, a loom's warp geometry, a pot's wall thickness — information a surface photograph simply cannot carry. Measured, on-site drawing also forces slow, structured looking.[3]

Apply it

Studio task

Design a respectful field-documentation kit for one craft and one maker — even a local one you can actually visit. Draft the consent conversation first: what you will record, who will own the photos, how you will credit the maker by name, and what you will give back. Then plan the record itself: the semi-structured questions you would ask, one measured section drawing that would reveal the object’s construction, the step-by-step process shots and tool inventory, one ergonomic observation of the maker’s posture at work, and the material’s source and season. Present it as a method, not a mood board — and mark clearly where your plan is participatory rather than extractive.
