The hook

'A nice warm beige' says almost nothing. The right six words say exactly what to change.

Watch two people discuss a colour that is not quite working. The amateur says 'it's a bit much, can we make it softer, more sophisticated?' - and everyone nods, and nobody knows what to do. The professional says 'the hue is right, the value's too dark and the chroma's too high; tint it a step and tone it down, keep the warm undertone' - and the painter knows exactly what to mix. Same problem, same colour. The difference is language.

Colour has a precise vocabulary, and it is not decoration for sounding clever - it is the tool that turns a vague unease into a specific, fixable instruction, and lets a whole team mean the same thing by each word. This lesson assembles that vocabulary: the three axes of hue, value and chroma; the moves of tint, tone and shade; and the subtleties - temperature and undertone - that quietly decide whether a scheme feels resolved. Learn to name colour this precisely and you will find you also start to see it more precisely, which is the real prize.

The three axes: hue, value, chroma

Every profession has a vocabulary that lets its members say precise things quickly, and colour is no exception. Reach for 'a nice warm cream' and you have said almost nothing checkable; name a colour on its three axes and you have said something another designer could act on. Those three axes - established in Lesson 0.1 - are the spine of the whole language, so it is worth fixing them firmly.

Hue is the colour's family and its position on the wheel: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, violet and all the steps between. It answers the question 'which colour?' and nothing else. Two colours can share a hue and look wildly different - navy and sky are both 'blue' - so hue alone is never a full description.

Value (also called tone or lightness) is how light or dark a colour is, judged as if the hue were switched off. It is the quiet workhorse of colour: value contrast is what lets you read text off a wall, tells a dark sofa from a pale floor, and gives a scheme its structure. A useful test is to imagine, or photograph, the colour in black and white - what is left is its value. Many schemes that feel wrong are really value problems: everything sits at the same middle lightness, so nothing stands out and the room goes flat.

Chroma (also called saturation or intensity) is how pure or how muted the colour is - the distance from a neutral grey. A pillar-box red is high chroma; the same red greyed toward brick is low chroma. Chroma is usually what a client means by 'too much' or 'too strong' - the answer is rarely a different hue, just less of it. Hold these three apart in your mind and you can already describe any colour better than most: 'a light-value, low-chroma blue-green' is a sentence a stranger could match.

Tint, tone and shade

Once you can place a colour on the three axes, the next words describe what happens when you move it - specifically, what happens to a pure hue when you add white, grey or black. These three moves have precise names, and confusing them is one of the commonest amateur slips.

A tint is a hue plus white. Tints are lighter and, importantly, usually lower in chroma than the pure hue - pastels are tints. Pink is a tint of red; sky blue a tint of blue. Tints tend to feel soft, airy and calm, and they open a room up because of their high value.

A shade is a hue plus black. Shades are darker and can feel richer, heavier, more enclosing - maroon is a shade of red, navy a shade of blue. Shades add weight and drama and, used low in a room or on a feature, ground it.

A tone is a hue plus grey (black and white together) - and tones are where the sophistication lives. Adding grey lowers chroma without simply lightening or darkening, giving muted, complex, 'dusty' colours: sage, terracotta, teal-grey, the whole family of colours that read as tasteful and grown-up precisely because they are not shouting. Most of the colours in a considered interior are tones, not pure hues.

The practical value of these words is that they name a direction of travel. When a colour is nearly right, you can say exactly how to fix it: 'tint it' (lift the value, soften it), 'shade it' (deepen and weight it), or 'tone it down' (mute the chroma with grey). That last phrase is in everyday speech for a reason - toning down is the single most common rescue in real colour work, taking a hue that is correct but too loud and greying it until it sits comfortably. Reach for pure hues and you get a nursery; reach for tints, tones and shades of them and you get a home.

Temperature and undertone

Two words separate people who are good with colour from people who are merely confident: temperature and undertone. Both describe subtleties that decide whether a scheme feels resolved or vaguely wrong.

Temperature is the warmth or coolness of a colour. Reds, oranges and yellows read as warm; blues, greens and violets as cool - but temperature is also relative, and this is the useful part. Within any hue family there are warmer and cooler versions: a lemon yellow is cooler than a golden yellow, a blue can lean warm (toward violet) or cool (toward green). Designers use temperature to do real work - warm colours seem to advance and make a space feel cosier and smaller; cool colours recede and make it feel calmer and larger (Module 5 puts this to use). Getting the temperature consistent, or deliberately contrasted, is half of making a palette hang together.

Undertone is the hidden bias inside a colour that looks neutral or near-neutral - and it is the thing that quietly wrecks more schemes than any bold choice. Every 'white', 'grey', 'beige' and 'greige' leans somewhere: a white can be warm (yellow/cream undertone) or cool (blue/grey undertone); a beige can have a pink, yellow, or green undertone. Alone, two beiges may look identical. Put them side by side, or against a strong reference, and one suddenly reads pink and the other faintly green - and if you have mixed undertones by accident, the room feels subtly dirty for reasons the client cannot name.

The skill is to see the undertone before you commit. Lay near-neutrals side by side and against pure white; the odd one out reveals its bias by contrast (simultaneous contrast again, put to work). Choose neutrals whose undertones agree with each other and with your main colours - warm whites with warm woods and earthy hues, cool greys with blues and crisp modern palettes. This one habit, more than any bold accent, is what makes a professional's neutrals look intentional and an amateur's look muddy.

Saturation, and putting the vocabulary to work

That leaves saturation - the word you will hear most, and the one most often muddled with others, so it is worth nailing down. Saturation is chroma stated as a proportion: how far a colour is from grey toward its purest possible version. High-saturation colours are vivid and demand attention; low-saturation colours are muted and recede. It is not the same as value (a colour can be dark and vivid, like a deep emerald, or light and vivid, like a lemon) and not the same as temperature. Because saturation is what the eye reads as 'loudness', it is the dial to reach for when a scheme is correct in hue but overwhelming: lower the saturation and the same colours become liveable. As a rough working guide, the more of a colour there is - a whole wall, a whole facade - the lower its saturation usually wants to be; strong saturation earns its keep in small doses.

Now put the whole vocabulary together, because its point is precision under pressure. Compare two ways of talking to a painter or a client. Amateur: 'It's too much, can we make it nicer?' Professional: 'The hue is right, but the value is too dark for a small room and the chroma is too high - let's tint it a step and tone it down, keeping the warm undertone so it still agrees with the oak.' The second sentence is not showing off; it is actionable. It isolates what is wrong, on which axis, and says exactly which way to move.

That is the whole purpose of the language of colour: to convert a vague feeling - something is off - into a specific, fixable instruction, and to let a whole team share one meaning for each word. Learn to describe every colour you meet in these terms - hue, value, chroma, its tint/tone/shade character, its temperature and undertone, its saturation - and you will find you not only talk about colour better, you see it better. Naming, in colour as in much else, is the beginning of noticing.

Workshop — build a vocabulary card

The aim is to make the words automatic by attaching each to a real colour you have handled. You will build a small reference card you can keep, and in doing so drill the distinctions until they are second nature.

  1. 1Take one hue and gather or cut versions of it: a pure version, a tint (add white or find a pale chip), a shade (a dark version), and a tone (a greyed, dusty version). Stick them in a row and label each correctly.
  2. 2Photograph the row and desaturate it. Rank the four by value in greyscale, then check against your labels - confirm that a tint is high value and a shade is low value, independent of hue.
  3. 3Lay out three or four near-neutrals (whites, greiges). Place them side by side and against a pure white sheet. Identify each one's undertone (warm/yellow, cool/blue, pink, green) - the odd one out will declare itself.
  4. 4Pick two chips of the same hue and mark which is the warmer and which the cooler version. Note what makes the call (a lean toward orange versus toward blue-green).
  5. 5On the card, write one model sentence describing your hue's toned version in full: hue, value, chroma, tint/tone/shade character, temperature and undertone.

On a building, value and temperature outrank hue. From across a street the eye reads light-versus-dark and warm-versus-cool long before it registers the exact colour, and material undertone - the pink in a granite, the green in a glass - decides whether an elevation reads clean or muddy. Specify colour in the full vocabulary so a facade consultant, a fabricator and a planner share one meaning, and watch undertones across stone, metal and glazing so they agree in daylight.

This vocabulary is your professional instrument - use it out loud. Clients cannot tell you what is wrong, but you can diagnose it: name the axis (usually chroma too high or values too close), name the fix (tone it down, tint it, spread the values), and hold the undertones of your whites, greiges and woods in agreement. Talking in tint/tone/shade, temperature and undertone turns 'I don't love it' into a solvable problem and makes you sound - and be - in control.

Practise the language everywhere until it becomes sight. Describe colours you pass - 'a low-chroma, mid-value blue-green with a grey undertone' - and check yourself by squinting to read value and by pairing near-neutrals to expose undertone. Learn tint, tone and shade exactly, because mixing them up marks a beginner. The goal is not jargon for its own sake; it is that naming a colour precisely trains you to actually see it, which is the whole skill.

Misconception check

Saturation, value and tone all basically mean the same thing - how strong a colour is.

They are three different things, and conflating them is why colour talk so often goes in circles. Value is how light or dark a colour is; saturation (chroma) is how pure or muted it is; and 'tone', used precisely, means a hue that has had grey added, which lowers its chroma. A colour can be dark yet vivid (deep emerald) or light yet vivid (lemon), so value and saturation move independently. Keeping them separate lets you say exactly what is wrong - 'too dark' is a value fix, 'too loud' is a saturation fix - instead of the catch-all 'too strong', which tells no one what to change.
