Chroma sets a scheme's energy and temperature shapes its depth - the two dials that turn a correct palette into a room that feels right.

The hook

Chroma is the volume knob and temperature is the depth control - two dials that decide how a room feels, not just how it looks.

You now have hue (which colour) and value (how light or dark). The last two controls are chroma - how pure or muted a colour is - and temperature - how warm or cool. These are the dials that most often separate a scheme that is technically 'correct' from one that actually feels right in the room.

Chroma is essentially the volume knob of colour: turn it up and a hue becomes vivid, insistent, energetic; turn it down and the same hue becomes muted, calm, sophisticated. Most rooms that feel 'too much' are simply turned up too loud. Temperature, meanwhile, does something almost spatial: warm surfaces advance toward you and cool ones fall back, so you can use temperature to make a room feel cosier or larger, shorter or deeper, without moving a wall. This lesson shows how to use both deliberately - and how they interact with value and with light.

Chroma - the volume knob

Chroma (also called saturation or intensity) is how pure a colour is - how far it sits from a neutral grey of the same value. A fully saturated hue is vivid and insistent; drop the chroma and it moves through muted, dusty, greyed versions until, at zero chroma, it becomes grey itself. Crucially, chroma is independent of value: you can have a dark vivid colour (a pure royal blue) and a dark muted one (a deep slate blue-grey) at the same lightness, or a light vivid and a light muted at another. Adjusting chroma without changing value is one of the most useful moves in the craft.

The single most practical fact about chroma is this: most rooms that feel 'too much' are over-saturated, not wrongly hued. When a client recoils from a bold colour, the instinct is to change the hue - but usually the hue is fine and it is the volume that is wrong. Take the same hue down in chroma - the vivid teal becomes a soft, greyed teal - and the room calms down completely while keeping the character the client was drawn to. This is why the muted, 'dirty', complex colours (think of the sophisticated greyed greens, dusky pinks and soft ochres of high-end paint ranges) are so widely loved: they carry hue identity without shouting, and they are forgiving of light and neighbours.

That does not make vivid colour wrong - it makes it powerful and therefore best used in small, deliberate doses. High chroma draws the eye instantly, which is exactly what you want in an accent, a front door, a piece of art, a brand mark. The reliable strategy across almost every scheme is low chroma over large areas, high chroma in small accents: muted walls and floors, a vivid cushion or artwork. Reverse it - vivid walls, muted accents - and the room fights you all day. Chroma, like value, wants a hierarchy.

How to mute a colour - and why muted colours are complex

Understanding how chroma is lowered helps you predict and control it. There are three classic ways to reduce a colour's chroma, and each shifts the colour a little differently. You can add grey (giving a clean 'toned' version at roughly the same value); you can add the colour's complement - a touch of the opposite hue - which is how painters traditionally 'knock back' a colour and what gives the most beautiful, complex muted tones; or, in the world of paint, muted colours are formulated with more complex pigment mixes rather than a single bright pigment. This is why sophisticated greyed colours often read as slightly different hues under different lights - they contain several pigments, each responding to light in its own way (a metamerism trap we return to in Module 3).

Adding a complement to mute a colour is worth understanding because it explains why muted schemes feel so harmonious. If your greyed green contains a little red, and your greyed terracotta contains a little green, the two colours literally share pigment and quietly echo each other - the palette hangs together in a way that swatches of pure, unrelated hues never do. Skilled colourists exploit this constantly, tinting a whole palette toward one undertone so everything relates.

> Muted does not mean dull. The most refined interior colours are highly muted and highly complex - low in chroma but full of subtle undertone. 'Muted' is the opposite of 'garish', not the opposite of 'interesting'.

The practical warning is about undertones. A muted colour has an undertone - the faint hue lurking within the grey - and that undertone can clash with neighbours even when the colours look 'neutral'. A greige with a green undertone beside one with a pink undertone will look subtly wrong together in a way that is maddening to diagnose if you are only thinking about the obvious colour. We develop near-neutrals and undertones fully in Module 4.3; for now, know that muting a colour introduces an undertone you must check against its neighbours under real light.

Temperature - advancing, receding and mood

We met warm and cool in Lesson 1.1 as halves of the wheel. Here we use temperature as an active design tool, because it does two powerful things: it changes perceived depth, and it sets mood.

On depth: warm colours (reds, oranges, yellows) tend to advance - they appear to come toward the viewer - while cool colours (blues, greens, violets) tend to recede, appearing to fall back. This is a genuinely useful perceptual effect, especially combined with value and chroma (dark, saturated, warm surfaces advance most strongly; light, muted, cool surfaces recede most). You can use it to reshape a room without construction. A too-long corridor feels shorter and more intimate if the far end wall is a warm, deeper tone that advances toward you. A small room feels more spacious with cool, light, receding walls. A cavernous high ceiling feels lower and cosier painted a warm, slightly darker tone; a low ceiling feels higher in a cool, light one. We build a whole lesson on this in Module 5.2, but temperature is the engine of it.

On mood: warm colours are generally experienced as active, cosy, energising and sociable; cool colours as calm, restful, spacious and formal. These are broad, reliable tendencies - but be honest about their limits, because the psychology gets overstated. The effects are real but modest, strongly dependent on chroma and brightness (a vivid warm is stimulating; a pale muted warm is merely gentle), and shaped by culture and context. We separate the solid evidence from the myths in Module 2. For now, use temperature confidently for its spatial effect and its broad mood tendency, while treating grand claims ('this exact blue boosts focus by X percent') with proper scepticism.

Putting the three dials together

You now have the complete toolkit from Module 1: hue, value, chroma - plus temperature, which is really a way of talking about where a hue sits and how it behaves. The skill that separates a professional from an amateur is adjusting these dials independently and diagnosing a problem in the right one. That vocabulary turns a vague 'it doesn't feel right' into a specific, fixable instruction.

Run through the common diagnoses. A scheme feels flat and lifeless? Almost always a value problem - the values are too close; open the light-to-dark range. A room feels too much, too loud, tiring? Almost always a chroma problem - turn the saturation down on the large areas and keep the hue. A room feels cold and unwelcoming, or conversely stuffy and oppressive? A temperature problem - nudge the palette warmer or cooler. Two 'neutrals' look subtly wrong together? An undertone (muted-hue) problem. Only rarely is the actual hue the thing that needs changing - which is exactly the opposite of where beginners look first.

And never forget the thread running through every lesson: all four dials are read in context. Chroma reads higher against a grey neighbour and lower against a vivid one; temperature is relative; value shifts with its surroundings; and every one of them changes under different light. So set your dials deliberately - muted over large areas, vivid in accents; a value range with a clear light, mid and dark; a temperature chosen for the room's depth and mood - and then confirm the whole thing at real size, next to the real neighbours, under the real light. That is the entire method of Module 1 in one breath: think in hue, value, chroma and temperature; design the relationships; and judge colour in its real context, never on a chip.

  1. 1Pick one hue you like (say a blue-green). Find or mix three versions at the same value but rising chroma: near-neutral, muted, vivid. Line them up and describe how the mood changes.

At building scale, chroma and temperature carry real, practical weight beyond looks. High-chroma facades read as loud in a street and age harshly as they weather and fade unevenly, which is why enduring architecture leans on muted, complex, material-derived colour. Temperature is also thermal-adjacent: dark, warm, saturated surfaces absorb more heat and dominate a view, while lighter, cooler, muted tones recede into context and stay cooler. Use strong chroma as a small, deliberate accent - a portal, a screen - not across large fields.

These two dials are your everyday problem-solvers. When a client says a colour is 'too much', reach for the chroma knob, not a new hue - mute it and keep what they loved. Use temperature to fix rooms spatially: warm tones to make a barn-like space intimate; cool, light tones to open a cramped one. Master undertones in your muted neutrals - a green-grey beside a pink-grey is the source of countless 'I can't say why but it's off' moments - and always confirm both under the client's real light.

Learn to mute a colour by adding its complement, not just grey, and see how much richer it is. And build the diagnostic habit now: when something feels off, ask which dial - value, chroma or temperature - is the culprit before blaming the hue.

Misconception check

When a colour feels 'too much' in a room, you have chosen the wrong colour and need a different one.

Usually the hue is fine; the chroma is too high and the proportion is wrong. 'Too much' is nearly always a volume problem, not a hue problem. Take the same hue down in saturation - the vivid teal becomes a soft, greyed teal - and confine it to a smaller area, and the room calms right down while keeping the character the client was drawn to. Reserve high chroma for small accents and keep large areas muted. Changing the hue throws away a choice that was probably right and starts the search over; adjusting the chroma and the proportion fixes the actual fault. Diagnose in the correct dimension - hue, value, chroma or temperature - before reaching for a whole new colour.
