The hook

The colour was perfect on the chip. On the wall it is a different colour - and now someone has to pay to repaint it.

A client picks a soft dove grey from a fan deck, delighted. The room is painted, and the grey that comes back is lighter, cooler and far more present than the chip promised - a proper pale blue-grey where they wanted a whisper. They are certain the wrong colour was used. It was not: this is the area effect, the well-known way a colour reads lighter and more saturated over a whole wall than on a small sample. The colour was correct; the approval was wrong.

Every good decision in this module - the right system, the right sheen, the precise specification - still fails at the last step if the colour is approved from the wrong thing, in the wrong light, at the wrong size. A trustworthy yes is designed, not assumed. This lesson is about that final act: sampling at real size, mocking up on the real wall, judging under real day and night light, and signing off in a way that prevents the dispute instead of losing it.

The chip lies: why samples must be big and in place

Everything in this module comes down to one moment: someone looks at a colour and says yes. If that yes is given to the wrong thing - a tiny chip, held in the wrong light, in the wrong place - then a perfect palette and a perfect specification still deliver a wall the client hates. The single most common, most expensive colour mistake in practice is approving colour from a sample that is too small, seen in the wrong conditions. This lesson is about making the yes trustworthy.

Start with size, because a small chip genuinely misleads - and not by opinion but by perception. A colour seen over a large area looks lighter, brighter and more saturated than the same colour on a small chip; this is the area effect, and it is strong. A pale grey chosen from a fan deck routinely arrives on the walls looking a full step lighter and more colourful - the timid grey becomes an assertive one, the barely-there blush becomes pink. Colours also gain intensity as they wrap a room and bounce light onto each other. So a chip is useful for a shortlist and useless for a decision.

The fix is to judge colour at, or close to, the size it will be. Move from the chip to a large painted sample - an A2 or A3 board painted properly, not a printed swatch - and from there, for any important surface, to a real mock-up on the actual wall. The bigger the tested area, the smaller the surprise. A designer who approves a whole house from a fan deck is gambling; one who approves from big painted samples on each wall is designing. The chip starts the conversation; it must never end it.

The mock-up: two coats, real substrate, real light

For anything that matters - a feature wall, a whole facade, a large ceiling, a repeated element - the gold standard is a mock-up: a substantial area of the actual colour, in the actual paint system and sheen, on the actual substrate, built and viewed before the whole job is committed. A useful mock-up follows a few hard rules.

Make it big enough. A meaningful mock-up is at least a square metre, and for a facade, a full bay or panel. Small enough to redo cheaply, big enough to defeat the area effect and show the colour behaving at something like real scale.

Build the real film. Paint the mock-up in the specified system, at the specified sheen, in the full number of coats over the real, prepared substrate. A single thin coat of the right colour over grey primer is not the colour - it is a colour on its way to being the colour. Only the complete film tells the truth, especially for deep and saturated shades that need their coats to reach full depth.

Put it where it will live. A mock-up painted on a board in the office and carried to site has lost the two things that matter most - the real wall and the real light. Paint it on the actual wall, ideally on more than one wall, because the same colour on a north wall and a south wall in the same room can read as two colours (Module 3). For a facade, mock up on the elevation that gets the harshest light and the one that stays in shade.

Leave it up. A mock-up judged for thirty seconds at handover is barely judged at all. Leave it in place for at least a full day so it can be seen as the light swings from morning to noon to evening to lamplight - because the colour will not hold still, and the client must approve the colour across its real range, not at one flattering instant.

Approving under real light, day and night

The mock-up exists to be judged, and how you run that judgement decides whether the approval is worth anything. The governing principle comes straight from Module 3: approve colour under the light it will actually get, at the times it will actually be seen. A colour signed off under the showroom's bright neutral light, or under the site's temporary work lamps, has been approved under a light that will never exist again once the building is occupied.

So view the mock-up in daylight - and not one daylight, but the range: cool north light, warm low sun, the flat grey of an overcast day, and the strong midday light of the Indian sky if the surface will get it. Then view it again after dark, under the actual lamps that will light the room, at the colour temperature and rendering quality (CRI) they provide (Lesson 3.3). A colour that sings by day can go dull, muddy or oddly warm under a cheap LED at night - and if the room is used mostly in the evening, the night reading is the one that matters most. Beware metamerism (Lesson 3.4): a paint matched to a fabric or a stone under one light can visibly diverge from it under another, so check the colour beside its real neighbours - the floor, the joinery, the worktop, the textile - under each light, not against a white wall alone.

Judge value first, then chroma, then hue, and judge the colour with the whole scheme present, at the size and in the place it will live. A useful discipline is to photograph the mock-up at each time of day and desaturate the photo on your phone: stripped of hue, the value structure shows plainly, and many colours that felt wrong turn out to be a value problem rather than a hue one. Bring the client to the mock-up at more than one time of day if you can, because their eye, not just yours, has to say yes to the real range - and a client who has seen the colour at night is a client who will not phone you, alarmed, the first evening they switch the lamps on. Approval is not a signature on a chip; it is a decision made in front of the real thing, under real light.

Sign-off that prevents disputes

The final job is to make the approval hold - to convert a colour everyone is happy with into a record that settles any later doubt. Colour disputes are among the most common and most bitter on site, because colour is emotional, memory is unreliable, and 'that is not the colour I chose' is easy to say and hard to disprove. A disciplined sign-off removes the argument before it starts.

Sign and date the approved sample. The mock-up or a painted control board, once approved, is signed and dated by you and the client and kept safe. It becomes the physical benchmark the finished work is measured against - the witness the specification's code points to (Lesson 7.3). If a later coat or a touch-up drifts, you compare against the retained sample, not against anyone's recollection.

Record the conditions. Note what was approved and under what light and at what times - 'approved on the east wall, viewed 9am and again 8pm under the specified 3000K lamps'. This closes the escape route of a colour that was fine by day being rejected at night, or the reverse.

Retain a control sample off the approved batch, and for large or phased work, agree a tolerance (Lesson 7.3) so later batches are checked against it rather than argued over. Keep the client involved at the mock-up stage, not after. The cheapest possible time to change a colour is when a square metre is painted; the most expensive is after the whole building is coated. Every hour spent getting a real, signed, well-lit mock-up approved saves days of repainting and goodwill later. Sampling and sign-off are not bureaucracy - they are the last, decisive act of designing colour, the point at which everything in this module either holds or falls apart.

You will run a proper colour approval on one colour and feel the area effect and the light shift for yourself. No client needed - just paint, a wall and a day.

On a facade, mock up a full bay in the real system on the real elevation, and leave it up through the weather and the day. Approve it on both the harshest-lit and most-shaded faces, because one colour will read as two. Sign and date the approved panel as the benchmark for every subsequent panel, and set a batch-to-batch tolerance - a facade colour is public and permanent, and a mock-up is the cheapest insurance you will ever buy.

Never let a client approve a room from a fan-deck chip - it is the classic, costly mistake. Paint big samples on more than one wall, build the full coats and sheen, and bring the client to the mock-up in daylight and again under the evening lamps, beside the real floor and joinery. Then sign and date the sample and keep it. Your calm, staged sign-off is also how you manage the client who changes their mind.

Practise approving colour like a professional long before a client depends on you. For any colour you choose, paint an A3 sample, put it on the actual wall, and watch it for a day - morning, noon, evening, lamplight. Notice the area effect: how much lighter and more saturated it looks big than on the chip. Build the habit of judging colour in place, at size, under real light, never from a swatch on a desk.

Misconception check

A paint chip or a small sample is enough to approve a colour - if it looks right on the card, it will look right on the wall.

A chip is the single most misleading thing to approve from. The area effect means the same colour looks lighter, brighter and more saturated over a whole wall than on a small sample, so the timid grey becomes assertive and the pale blush becomes pink. A chip also carries none of the real light, the real neighbours or the full paint film. Approve instead from a large mock-up - at least a square metre, in the real system, sheen and coats, on the real wall - viewed in daylight and under the night lamps, then signed and dated. The chip starts the shortlist; it must never end the decision.
