Daylight & Colour
Daylight is the one light no one controls - it swings warm to cool through the day, shifts by orientation and season, and turns every colour into a moving target you must design for
The paint you approved at 11 in the morning is a different colour by 6 in the evening - and the wall never moved.
Of all the lights a colour must live under, daylight is the strangest, because it refuses to hold still. It is warm and low at dawn, bright and comparatively cool at noon, and gold-to-red again at dusk; it is one thing under a clear sky and quite another under monsoon cloud; and it arrives completely differently on the north face of a building than on the south. Daylight is not a light - it is a whole family of lights, cycling through your rooms every day and around your building every year.
And it is the one light you cannot switch, dim or replace. You can specify a lamp; you cannot specify the sun. So daylight demands a different kind of thinking: instead of choosing a colour for one condition, you choose a colour whose behaviour across all of daylight's moods you can accept, and you place and orient it knowing what light it will get. This lesson maps how daylight changes - by hour, by season, by orientation, by weather - and how to design colour for a moving target, with particular attention to the intense, high-sun conditions of most of India.

Daylight moves through the day
Follow a white wall from sunrise to sunset and you follow daylight through its whole emotional range. At dawn and again at dusk, the sun is low and its light travels a long, slanting path through the atmosphere, which scatters away the blues and leaves the warm end - so early and late light is golden, even red, and low enough to rake across surfaces and throw long shadows. Around the middle of the day the sun is high, its path through the air is short, and the light is far brighter and comparatively neutral to cool, especially the light from the open blue sky itself, which is genuinely blue. Photographers formalise this with colour temperature (the subject of Lesson 3.3): warm, low-numbered light at the ends of the day, cooler, higher-numbered light in the middle.
This daily arc means a colour is never doing one job. A soft, warm off-white can look creamy and inviting in the morning and evening, then flatten to a plain cool white at midday. A cool grey-blue can look crisp and elegant at noon and turn slightly muddy and lifeless in the warm evening light. Neither is 'the' colour of that paint - both are true, at their hour.
> Ask not 'what colour is this paint?' but 'what does this paint do at 8am, at 1pm and at 6pm?' - because the room will ask all three.
The practical consequence is simple and non-negotiable: judge a colour at more than one time of day, in the actual room. The single most common colour regret - 'it looked lovely in the shop, it looks wrong at home' - is very often really 'I only ever saw it at one time of day.' A large sample left on the wall for a full day, checked morning, noon and evening, tells you the colour's whole personality rather than one flattering snapshot of it.

North light, south light: the compass changes everything
Even at a single moment, a colour behaves differently on different sides of a building, because each orientation receives a completely different kind of daylight. In the northern hemisphere - which is all of India - the compass sorts light into distinct characters, and learning them is one of the most useful things a colour designer can do.
North light never receives direct sun; it is filled entirely by the soft, indirect light of the sky. That makes it cool in tone, remarkably steady through the day, and shadowless - which is exactly why artists and studios have prized north light for centuries. For colour, north light is honest but cool: it will not flatter warm colours, and it can make an already-cool colour feel chilly or grey. South light is the opposite - the workhorse, bright and direct for much of the day, and in India often fierce. It is warmer and far more intense, and it moves, so a south room's colour shifts a lot between morning and afternoon. East light is the warm, gentle light of morning that fades by afternoon; west light is the hot, strong, orange light of late afternoon and evening, which can make warm colours blaze and cool ones glow oddly.
This is why the same paint genuinely needs different handling by orientation. A north-facing bedroom or study, cool and steady, usually wants warmer, slightly deeper or more saturated colours to counter the coolness - a pale, cool grey that looked elegant in the showroom can read as dreary and clinical on a north wall. A bright, hot south or west room can take cooler, calmer, less saturated colours that would fall flat in the north, and often needs them, because a warm colour under hot west light can become overwhelming. The rule of thumb - warm up the cool rooms, cool down the hot ones - is not decoration; it is compensating for the light each side is dealt.
North = cool, steady, indirect (warm up your colours). South/West = warm, bright, intense (cool + calm your colours).
Season, weather and the Indian sky
The day is one cycle; the year is another. The sun sits higher in summer and lower in winter, changing both the angle light enters a room and how deep it reaches; a low winter sun can pour right across a floor that summer sun never touches. Weather layers on top: a clear sky gives crisp, directional, slightly cool light with sharp shadows, while an overcast or monsoon sky gives soft, flat, shadowless light that is dimmer and can mute colours noticeably. A colour scheme experienced under three weeks of grey monsoon light is a different experience from the same rooms in dry, brilliant winter sun.
For most of India this matters more, not less, because the baseline is so intense. Much of the country sits at low latitudes with a high sun and very strong, bright daylight for much of the year. Strong light tends to wash colours out and flatten them - a saturated colour that looks balanced in a temperate grey climate can look garish under a hard tropical sun, and a pale colour can bleach to near-white and glare uncomfortably. This is part of why so many traditional Indian responses to strong light are so effective: deep verandahs and jaalis that filter and soften the light before it reaches a surface, and either bold, high-chroma colours confident enough to hold their own against the sun (the famous saturated palettes of Rajasthan) or cool, light lime-washed surfaces that reflect heat and glare (the whites and blues of coastal and desert towns).
The design lesson is to treat the local daylight as a given you plan around, not a neutral backdrop. In a bright, high-sun setting, expect colours to read lighter and less saturated than the chip suggests, be wary of large areas of pale colour that will glare, and use shading devices as colour tools - the same wall reads very differently in raw sun and behind a jaali. In a cloudier or more northern setting, expect colours to read a little deeper and cooler, and lean warmer to compensate for flat grey light.
Designing colour for a light you cannot control
You cannot switch the sun off, so the craft of colour-with-daylight is really the craft of anticipating and accepting a range. A few working principles pull the lesson together.
First, choose colours for their range, not their peak. Since a colour will look several ways over a day, pick one whose full set of appearances you are content with, and be especially careful with colours that swing hard - a colour that is gorgeous at golden hour but sour at noon is usually the wrong colour for a room used mainly at midday. Near-neutrals with a gentle undertone tend to travel through the day more gracefully than a highly saturated statement colour, which is one honest argument for the restraint of a largely neutral scheme in a daylight-rich room.
Second, match the colour strategy to the orientation and use. A north-facing room used by day for reading or work benefits from warmth and enough value contrast to feel alive under flat cool light; a hot west-facing living room used in the evening might want cooler, calmer colours that settle rather than shout under the low orange sun. Think about when the room is actually used, not just which way it faces - a bedroom used mostly after dark is really an artificial-light problem (Lesson 3.3) with a daylight cameo.
Third, test in place, over time, at size. Everything in this lesson points to the same discipline: a big sample, on the real wall, watched morning to night, in more than one kind of weather if you can. There is no chart and no software that substitutes for seeing the actual colour in the actual light of the actual room. Daylight is generous and beautiful and completely uncontrollable; the professional's answer is not to fight it but to know it well enough to place colour where the light it gets is the light it needs.

Workshop - a one-day daylight study
This exercise needs nothing but a sample and a phone, but it must be done over a single day, in a real room. It builds the habit that prevents the most common colour mistake of all: judging a colour at one moment and being surprised by all the others.

- 1Tape a large sample (A4 or bigger - small chips lie) onto a wall in a room you use daily. Bigger is better; colour intensifies with area.
- 2Photograph and eyeball it at three times: mid-morning, midday, and evening. Do not correct the photos. Note in words how the colour shifts - warmer, cooler, lighter, duller.
- 3Move the same sample to a north-facing spot and a south-facing spot at the same moment. Compare: the cool steadiness of north versus the warmer, brighter, more variable south.
- 4If you can, repeat one reading on a bright day and an overcast or rainy one, and note how flat, dim light mutes the colour.
- 5Write a two-line verdict: 'this colour works best facing _, in a room used mainly at _,' and one condition where it fails. That verdict is a real design decision.

Orientation is a colour decision made at the plan stage, long before any paint. Where you place a room, and which way its openings face, fixes the daylight its colours will live under for the life of the building. Use shading - deep reveals, verandahs, jaalis, brise-soleil - as colour instruments, not only thermal ones: the same facade colour reads utterly differently in raw sun and in filtered shade. In India's high sun, expect surfaces to wash lighter, and test full-scale samples on the actual elevation.
Read the compass before you open the fan deck, and let it set your strategy room by room. Warm up the cool, steady north rooms; calm and cool the bright, hot south and west ones. Never sign off a colour from a chip under studio light - put a large sample on the client's real wall and view it morning, noon and evening, ideally across different weather. When a client falls for a showroom colour, walk them through what their own daylight will do to it before they commit.
Start a daylight diary: photograph one wall or object at 8am, 1pm and 6pm for a week. Watching one surface travel warm-cool-warm, and comparing a north window to a south one, will teach you more about colour and light than any lecture. Learn to name the four orientations by feel - the cool steadiness of north light, the fierce swing of south, gentle east morning, hot west evening - so that when you plan a room you already know what light its colours will be dealt.
