Colour Safety & Coding Standards
Some colours are not yours to design with: a red circle, a yellow triangle, a green-and-yellow wire mean the same thing worldwide - reserved, tested and often legally binding.
On a fire door, a gas line or a live wire, colour is not self-expression - it is a shared, tested, sometimes legally binding language.
Across the world, a small set of colours has been standardised so that a warning means the same thing on a factory floor in Coimbatore, a construction site in Chennai and an oil platform in the North Sea. A red circle prohibits, a yellow triangle warns, a green-and-yellow wire is earth - and none of these are yours to repurpose for decoration.
This final lesson of the module is where a colour course turns deliberately cautious, and that is the point. The most sophisticated thing a colour designer can know is where colour's authority stops. On a mood board colour can be free; on safety and services it is a reserved code, always paired with a shape, a symbol, a label or a physical test - the redundancy rule of this whole module, made law.
Colour indicates; the shape, label and meter confirm. Verify the standard - never guess with lives.
The universal language of safety colours
Some colours are not yours to design with. Across the world, a small set of safety colours has been standardised so that a warning means the same thing on a factory floor in Coimbatore, a construction site in Chennai and an oil platform in the North Sea. The governing documents are ISO 3864 (graphical symbols and safety colours) internationally, and in India BIS IS 9457 and related standards, which align closely with ISO. If you touch signage, services or interiors in any building where safety matters, you must know these meanings and never repurpose them for decoration.
The core code is small and worth memorising:

A prohibition is a red circle with a diagonal bar; a warning is a yellow triangle; a mandatory instruction is a solid blue circle; safe-condition and exit signs are green rectangles. The shape carries the meaning even in silhouette, at distance, in smoke or poor light, and for people who cannot distinguish the colour - the safety world learned the redundancy lesson of Lesson 8.3 long ago and built it into law. ISO 7010 then standardises the actual pictograms (the running figure for exit, the flame, the various hazards) so they too cross language barriers.
For the designer, the practical discipline is twofold. First, do not use the safety colours in a conflicting way near where they carry safety meaning - a big decorative red circle by a fire door, or green wayfinding that competes with green exit signage, creates dangerous ambiguity. Second, respect the shapes and contrast - a safety sign that is the right colour but low-contrast or badly lit is a failed sign. Safety colour is the one arena where colour meaning is genuinely fixed, tested and, in many cases, legally required, and it is not the place for personal expression.

Pipes and services: identifying what is inside
Beyond signs, colour quietly identifies what is running through a building's veins. Pipeline identification codes let a technician tell water from gas from acid at a glance - vital in a plant room, a fire, or an emergency shut-off. In India the reference is IS 2379, which assigns a 'ground colour' to each class of service, often with colour bands to name the specific contents and arrows for flow direction. Representative ground colours (always verify against the current edition and any client or plant standard) include:

fire-fighting water .. fire redDifferent regimes exist elsewhere - the US uses ANSI/ASME A13.1, Europe uses EN/ISO systems - and large clients (railways, refineries, hospitals) often layer their own standard on top. The designer's job is rarely to invent these; it is to know they exist, to leave room for them, and never to let an interior finish scheme overrule or obscure a service identification that a maintenance or emergency team relies on.
The same identification logic runs through many building services: medical gas outlets are colour-coded (oxygen, nitrous oxide, medical air and vacuum each have an assigned colour under standards such as ISO 32 and related IS codes), gas cylinders carry body-and-shoulder colours, and fire-protection pipework is characteristically red. In each case colour is paired with text and often a symbol or the substance name stencilled on - again the redundancy rule, because a maintenance worker's safety can depend on not confusing medical air with something else, and colour vision cannot be assumed.

For an architect or interior designer this feels far from palette work, but it intersects constantly: exposed services in a restaurant or loft, colour-coded pipework in a plant room you are finishing, the coordination of a decorative scheme with mandatory service identification. The rule is simple - identification colours win. Design around them, label them clearly, light them so they can be read, and never paint over an identification band to make a space look tidier.
Wires: the most safety-critical colour code of all
Of all colour codes, electrical wiring is the one where getting it wrong can kill, and it is also the one most muddled by history - because the standards changed, and old and new coexist in real buildings. Modern Indian practice follows the harmonised IEC scheme (IS 732 / IEC 60446-style colour identification), but a great deal of installed wiring predates it, so you will meet both.

Earth green-yellow (striped) greenRead that table twice, because the traps are real. Black meant neutral under the old code but is a live phase colour under the new one. Blue was a phase colour in the old three-phase scheme (red-yellow-blue) but is neutral in the new one. Only the earth conductor is relatively stable - green historically, green-and-yellow striped now - which is why the green-yellow combination is reserved worldwide for protective earth and must never be used for anything else. Other countries differ again (North America uses black and red for line, white for neutral, green for earth), so an imported fitting can arrive wired to a foreign convention.
The design and safety lesson is blunt: colour indicates, but you never trust it with your life. A competent electrician tests every conductor dead before touching it, regardless of its colour, precisely because a wire may have been installed to an old code, mislabelled, or wired by someone careless. Colour speeds the routine and reduces error; testing is what actually keeps people safe. This is the redundancy principle at its most literal - the backup cue is a meter reading.
For architects and interior designers this matters more than it seems. You specify light fittings, feature wiring, exposed conduit, imported luminaires and smart-home kit; you coordinate with electrical consultants; you sometimes expose wiring as a design feature. Knowing that wiring colour is codified, safety-critical and historically inconsistent means you brief and coordinate responsibly - you flag legacy installations, you do not assume an imported fitting matches local colours, and you never treat a live-services question as merely aesthetic. When in doubt, it is a licensed electrician's call, not a colour choice.

Standards, honesty and why colour is never the only cue

A few honest words about the standards themselves. They are real, they matter, and they change - editions are revised, national codes diverge from international ones, and legacy installations persist for decades. So treat any colour table (including the representative ones in this lesson) as a prompt to check the current, applicable standard, not as gospel. The authoritative sources are the standards bodies: BIS (bis.gov.in) for Indian standards and ISO (iso.org) internationally, plus the specific codes your project, client or jurisdiction mandates. When a code is safety-critical - wiring, gas, fire, structural - the designer's role is to coordinate with the qualified professional and the current standard, never to improvise from memory.

You carry legal and coordination responsibility for the reserved codes. Fire, exit, hazard and services signage must follow the applicable standards (ISO 3864/7010, the relevant BIS codes and local fire rules), and your facade or interior palette must never compete with them - no decorative red rings by fire doors, no green feature that muddies exit signage. Where services are exposed as architecture, keep their identification colours and labels intact, and coordinate the safety-critical trades with the qualified consultants rather than resolving them as aesthetics.
When your finishes meet identification colours, the identification wins. Exposed pipework, coloured conduit, plant-room services and imported fittings all carry codes a maintenance or emergency team relies on - never paint over an identification band or a green-yellow earth to tidy a look. If you feature services or specify imported luminaires, flag that their wiring may follow a foreign convention and brief a licensed electrician. Keep the reserved safety colours out of decorative schemes where they could be misread near real safety information.
