Solar-Washing: Hype vs Reality

A building can wear solar panels the way a brochure wears the word sustainable - as an image rather than a fact - and learning to tell a genuinely generating envelope from a decorative, over-claimed or dubiously-accounted one is the first act of honesty in solar architecture

The hook

A tower gets wrapped in dark blue glass, the press release says 'solar facade', and the ribbon is cut. Nobody asks the only question that matters: how many kilowatt-hours does it actually make?

Solar has become a symbol as much as a technology. A rooftop glinting with panels, a facade sheathed in photovoltaic blue, the phrase 'net-zero' on a hoarding - these read instantly as virtue, and that is precisely the problem. When an image carries this much prestige, some buildings will chase the image and skip the substance. A token array is bolted on where the cameras can see it; a modelled best-case number is quoted as though it were delivered energy; a decorative strip of PV faces the wrong way and generates almost nothing; a 'net-zero' claim turns out to lean entirely on purchased certificates. The building looks solar. It is not, in any honest accounting, doing the work.

This is solar-washing - the solar cousin of greenwashing - and a solar-literate designer must be able to see through it, in others' projects and, more importantly, in their own. This lesson is a decoder. It names the common washes, gives you five questions that cut through them, and insists on the discipline that separates a genuinely generating envelope from a photogenic one: real numbers, measured not modelled, expressed as a share of the building's actual demand, with honest accounting behind any headline claim. Being able to design a power-plant envelope means nothing if you cannot also tell when one is only pretending to be one.

The pattern

What solar-washing is - and why it works

Solar-washing is the practice of presenting a building as solar-powered, or greener than it is, on the strength of PV that is token, over-claimed, decorative, or backed by dubious accounting. It is a specific case of greenwashing, and it works for the same reason all greenwashing works: the *symbol* of the good thing is far cheaper to buy than the good thing itself. Real generation demands a suitable surface, correct orientation, a properly sized and maintained system, and honest measurement over years. The *appearance* of generation demands only some visible panels and a confident caption. When markets, awards, tenants and regulators reward the appearance, some projects will rationally supply just the appearance.

The washes come in recognisable forms. Token solar puts a small array on a building whose energy use dwarfs it - a few panels on an air-conditioned glass tower - so the building can be called 'solar' while PV meets a tiny fraction of demand. Over-claimed generation quotes the nameplate rating, or a sunniest-day best case, as if it were the energy actually delivered across a real year (the next lesson takes this apart in detail). Decorative PV places modules for how they look rather than how they perform - a vertical or north-facing photovoltaic pattern that photographs beautifully and produces very little. And dubious net-zero accounting reaches 'net-zero' not by generating clean energy on site but by buying renewable-energy certificates or offsets of uncertain quality, sometimes with no on-site generation at all.

What makes solar-washing insidious is that each of these can shade from honest into misleading by degree. A modest array is not a lie; calling a building 'solar-powered' because of it is. A modelled yield is a legitimate design tool; presenting it as achieved output is not. Decorative PV can be a deliberate, disclosed architectural choice; passing it off as a serious generator is the wash. The designer's task is not cynicism - plenty of solar is real and excellent - but discernment: the habit of asking, every time, whether the substance matches the symbol.

Five questions that cut through any solar claim

You can decode almost any solar or 'net-zero' claim with five questions, and the tell is always the same - a genuine claim answers them with numbers, a washed one changes the subject.

1. How much does it actually generate? The honest unit is kilowatt-hours per year, ideally measured. A claim that shows panels, module counts or 'square metres of solar' but never states energy is hiding the only figure that matters. Area is not output.

2. What share of the building's demand does it meet? Generation means little without the denominator. A 20 kW array is impressive on a house and trivial on a hospital. Ask for generation as a percentage of the building's actual annual consumption - that single ratio deflates most token-solar claims instantly.

3. Is the number measured or modelled? A pre-construction simulation is a design tool, not a result. 'Expected to generate' and 'generated' are different verbs. For an operating building, ask for metered data over at least a year; for a new one, ask whether the figure is nameplate, modelled, or a warranty, and treat it accordingly.

4. What does 'net-zero' actually count? Net-zero is a boundary definition in disguise. On-site generation offsetting on-site use is a strong claim; 'net-zero' achieved purely by buying certificates or distant offsets, with little or no generation on the building, is a much weaker one wearing the same word. Always ask what is inside the boundary and what was purchased.

5. Is the PV working or decorative? Look at where the modules are and which way they face. Vertical, shaded, or north-facing PV (in the northern hemisphere) generates a fraction of what optimally-oriented modules do. If the placement only makes sense for the photograph, treat the generation claim with suspicion.

None of these questions is hostile. They are the same questions a good engineer, a careful client and an honest designer ask anyway. Their power is that solar-washing cannot survive them: a washed claim has no measured kWh, no share-of-demand, no honest boundary - only an image. Ask the five, and the substance either appears or it doesn't.

The grey zone

Honest gesture vs dishonest claim - where the line sits

Not all small or imperfect solar is washing, and it is important not to over-correct into a purity that dismisses every modest system. A homeowner who installs a small array that meets a fraction of their load has done a genuinely good thing; a facade whose PV is partly decorative can be honest architecture if it is described honestly. The line between a legitimate gesture and solar-washing is not the size of the system or the perfection of its orientation - it is the honesty of the claim made about it.

Consider three buildings with identical token arrays. The first says nothing grand; it reports that PV meets about eight percent of its electricity and is one part of a broader efficiency effort. That is honest. The second brands itself 'solar-powered' and puts a giant panel motif on its marketing while PV meets eight percent. That is washing - the same hardware, a dishonest frame. The third installed the array purely so the project could win a green rating, with no intention of the panels doing meaningful work, and quietly lets them underperform. That is the most cynical wash of all: solar as a compliance costume.

The grey zone also appears in language. 'Solar-ready', 'solar-enabled', 'up to X kWh', 'designed to be net-zero' - these hedged phrases can be scrupulously accurate or deliberately slippery. 'Up to' quotes a ceiling few systems reach; 'designed to be' describes an intention, not an outcome. A literate reader notices the hedge and asks what the un-hedged, delivered number is.

For the designer, the practical discipline is symmetrical honesty: hold your own projects to the same five questions you would ask of a rival's. If your building's PV meets a modest share of demand, say so plainly and let the other sustainability moves carry their own weight. A modest, truthfully-described solar contribution earns more lasting trust than an inflated one that a curious tenant, journalist or auditor can puncture with a single question. Honesty is not only ethical here; it is durable. Over-claims age badly, because meters do not lie forever.

In practice

Designing so your solar survives scrutiny

The antidote to solar-washing is not to avoid solar - it is to design and describe it so that it survives the five questions, and to build that scrutiny into the project from the start. Three habits do most of the work.

First, decide honestly what role PV plays, and size the claim to match. Sometimes PV is the headline: a well-oriented, well-sized system meeting a large share of demand, and you can say so with numbers. Sometimes PV is a supporting move: a modest contribution alongside envelope efficiency, daylighting and demand reduction. Sometimes an element is frankly more architectural than energetic - a coloured facade PV chosen for expression, generating little. All three are legitimate; only one deserves the word 'solar-powered', and confusing them is where washing begins. Name the role before you name the building.

Second, separate modelled from measured, always. During design, use simulation freely - it is how you make good decisions - but label it as expectation. After handover, commission metering so the building can report what it actually generates, and be willing to publish that even when it undershoots the model (it usually will, a little; the next lesson explains why). A building that reports its real output, year after year, is structurally incapable of solar-washing.

Third, watch the accounting boundary. If a project pursues net-zero, be precise about what is on-site generation, what is efficiency, what is grid-supplied renewable energy, and what is purchased offsets - and present them separately rather than blended into one triumphant claim. Offsets are not illegitimate, but they are a different, weaker instrument than a kilowatt-hour made on the roof, and merging them hides that difference.

The binding numbers behind all of this - certified yield, net-metering credits, the validity of any certificate or offset - belong to the manufacturers' verified data, the utility or DISCOM, and the governing rules, not to a designer's optimism. Your job is the discipline that keeps the claim tethered to reality: measured over modelled, share-of-demand over raw watts, on-site over purchased, and a role named honestly before a slogan is written.

Modelled output is a design tool; delivered energy is a metered result. Never present a simulation or nameplate as achieved generation. Module 9.3 details the gap.

The single ratio that deflates token-solar claims. Generation without the demand denominator is meaningless. Ask for kWh generated over kWh consumed.

Solar-washing reaches interiors through the same gap between image and substance - a 'solar' space that generates little, or daylight claims that do not survive measurement. When a scheme leans on solar glazing or a photovoltaic feature for its green story, ask the five questions: how much energy, what share of load, measured or modelled, and is the element working or decorative? Semi-transparent PV chosen mainly for its look is a legitimate design choice - but describe it as expression, not as a serious generator, and never let a decorative element carry a 'powers the space' claim it cannot meet. Your credibility with occupants rests on comfort and daylight they can feel and on numbers that hold up; a truthful, modest energy story ages far better than an inflated one. Coordinate the binding generation and metering figures with the engineers and manufacturers; own the honesty of the interior's sustainability narrative.

Learning to spot solar-washing is a core literacy skill, and it will make your judgement stand out. The trap is that solar looks so virtuous that people stop asking whether it works. Train yourself to ask the five decoder questions of every 'solar' or 'net-zero' building you read about: actual kWh per year, share of demand met, measured versus modelled, what the net-zero boundary really counts, and whether the PV is oriented to generate or to be photographed. Understand the difference between a token array and a well-sized one, between nameplate and delivered energy, and between on-site generation and purchased offsets. This is not cynicism - most solar is real and good - it is discernment, and it protects you from repeating hype as fact. A designer who can separate the substance of solar from its symbol is far more valuable than one who is merely enthusiastic about panels.

Misconception check

If a building has solar panels on it and calls itself 'solar-powered' or 'net-zero', then it must be genuinely green and generating most of its own clean energy - the panels prove it.

The panels prove almost nothing on their own; the claim needs numbers behind it. A building can carry visible PV and still be solar-washing in several ways. The array may be token - meeting a tiny fraction of a large energy demand while the building brands itself 'solar-powered.' The generation figure may be over-claimed - a nameplate rating or best-case model quoted as if it were the energy actually delivered across a real year, which is always lower once heat, dirt, shading, inverter and wiring losses and degradation are counted. The PV may be decorative - placed vertically, in shade, or facing away from the sun for how it photographs rather than how it performs, generating little. And 'net-zero' may rest on dubious accounting - purchased renewable-energy certificates or distant offsets of uncertain quality, sometimes with no meaningful on-site generation at all. None of these is disproved by the mere presence of panels. To know whether a solar claim is real, ask five questions: how much does it actually generate in measured kWh per year; what share of the building's demand does that meet; is the figure measured or only modelled; what does the net-zero boundary actually count as on-site versus purchased; and is the PV oriented to work or to be seen? A genuine claim answers with numbers; a washed one shows an image and changes the subject.
