Agents for Site & Context
An agent can assemble a rich site dossier fast - context, climate, regulatory research, precedent - pulling scattered strands into one readable picture; but a site is a place with hard facts and binding rules, so every one of them must be verified at its source
An agent can hand you a beautiful site dossier for the wrong plot, quoting a setback that changed two years ago - and it will look exactly as convincing as the correct one.
Every design sits on a real place, and understanding that place is one of the first serious jobs of a project: its context and history, its climate and orientation, its physical realities, and - inescapably - the regulations that govern what can be built there. Traditionally, assembling this understanding means pulling together many scattered strands: climate records, maps and satellite imagery, zoning and byelaw documents, neighbourhood history, precedent, a physical survey. It is exactly the kind of multi-source gathering and synthesis an agent is good at. Give an agent a site and a goal, and it can research the context, pull climate data, look up the applicable regulations, find relevant precedents nearby, and assemble the whole into a readable site dossier far faster than you could by hand - a genuine boon, especially for a small practice or a site in an unfamiliar city.
But a site is not a topic to be summarised; it is a specific place with hard, checkable facts and binding legal rules, and this is where the verification duty is at its most concrete in the whole design process. Two failure modes make site research especially treacherous. First, the wrong-place error: an agent can confidently attach data to the wrong location - a same-name town, an approximate coordinate, a regional average passed off as a local fact. Second, the stale-rule error: regulations change, and an agent will quote a superseded FSI, an amended setback or a withdrawn standard as though it were current, with total confidence. Both arrive fluent and neither announces itself as wrong. This lesson is about using the agent's assembling power to understand a site more richly than ever - while holding the iron rule that every hard fact is verified at its source, and every binding rule at the authority.
Agent assembles the dossier; you verify every fact at its source, every rule at the authority. And you go and STAND on the site - the feel of a place is not in any dataset.
Assembling the site dossier: many strands, one picture
The natural first value of an agent in site work is assembly: gathering the many strands that make up an understanding of a place and pulling them into one coherent, readable dossier. Site knowledge is scattered by nature - climate data in one place, zoning in another, history and context in yet others, imagery and maps elsewhere - and simply collecting and organising it is slow, valuable work that an agent can accelerate dramatically.
The figure names the main strands, each shaded by how hard it must be verified. Context and history: the neighbourhood, its character, its evolution, notable nearby buildings, the social and physical setting - useful orienting research, generally low-stakes, spot-check it. Climate data: temperature, rainfall, humidity, prevailing winds, solar path, extremes - the environmental inputs that should shape a responsive design. An agent can pull these together quickly, but they are hard numbers to source, not to accept on trust. Physical and access: topography and levels, existing features, vegetation, services, road access, orientation - much of which an agent can research from public data but which ultimately needs a real survey. Regulatory: zoning, land use, FSI, setbacks, height limits, coverage, heritage or environmental constraints - the binding rules, the highest-stakes strand of all, verified only at the authority. And precedent: how others have built on comparable sites and in comparable climates nearby, which links back to the research skills of Lesson 3.1.
Assembled well, this dossier is genuinely powerful. Instead of spending days gathering before you can even begin to think about the site, you can have a structured first picture quickly and spend your time on what matters - reading the place, understanding its opportunities and constraints, and letting it shape the design. For a designer working on an unfamiliar site or in a city they do not know well, an agent can surface context and considerations they might otherwise miss entirely. The productivity gain is real and the reach is real. But the dossier is a draft understanding, not a verified one: a fast, well-organised assembly of claims, every one of which inherits the reliability of its source and the agent's fidelity in reporting it. What makes it safe to use is the discipline of the next sections - verifying the hard facts, and never, ever taking the regulations on the agent's word.

Climate, environment and the facts you must source
Climate and environmental data are where agentic site research is most seductively useful and quietly risky, because the numbers matter enormously to a good design and they are exactly the kind of specific, checkable facts an agent can get subtly wrong. A climate-responsive design depends on getting the inputs right - the solar path that drives shading and orientation, the prevailing winds that drive natural ventilation, the rainfall that drives drainage and harvesting, the temperature and humidity ranges that drive the whole environmental strategy. An agent can assemble all of this into a tidy climate summary, and it is a real time-saver to have that first pass. But treat every number as a fact to source, not to accept.
The wrong-place error, shown in the figure, is the first trap. Ask an agent for the climate of a specific site and it may give you data for a same-named place, for the nearest major city rather than your actual location (which can differ substantially in a country as varied as India), for an approximate coordinate, or a regional average presented as a local fact. Micro-climate - the difference a hill, a water body, an urban heat island or a valley makes - is beyond what a generic lookup captures, and the agent will not flag the gap. So confirm the exact location, and for the data that will actually drive the design, go to a proper climate source - a recognised weather dataset or station data for the specific place - rather than relying on the agent's summary. The second trap is staleness and vagueness: climate normals get updated, and 'it rains a lot in the monsoon' is not a design input.
The healthy pattern is to use the agent to assemble a first environmental picture and to tell you what to look into, then verify the design-driving numbers at authoritative sources and, crucially, bring your own reading of the place - which no dataset fully captures. Sun and wind and water behave in ways a real site visit and a real survey reveal and a remote summary cannot. And the environmental analysis that a later module covers (Module 5.3) - shading studies, ventilation, daylight - is only as good as the climate inputs it runs on, so a fabricated or misplaced climate figure poisons everything downstream. The agent gathers the environment fast; sourcing the numbers and reading the actual place remain yours, because a design tuned to the wrong climate is worse than one tuned to none.
Regulatory research: useful to gather, never to trust
Regulatory research is the single most dangerous place in the entire design process to rely on an agent, and it deserves its own blunt rule: an agent may help you find and understand the regulations, but it may never be the source you rely on for what they require. Zoning, permitted land use, FSI, setbacks, height limits, ground coverage, parking provision, fire and access requirements, heritage and environmental constraints - these are binding legal facts that determine what can lawfully be built, and getting one wrong is not an academic error but a catastrophic, expensive, sometimes project-ending one.
Agents are especially unreliable here for reasons that compound. Regulations are jurisdiction-specific and an agent easily applies the wrong city's or country's rules. They change - the stale-rule error in the figure is endemic, because an agent's training reflects a moment in the past and byelaws, FSI regimes and development-control rules are amended regularly, so it will quote a superseded figure as current with complete confidence. They are exactly the kind of specific, numeric, authoritative-sounding fact that agents fabricate most fluently: a plausible setback, a plausible FSI, a plausible clause number that does not say what the agent claims or does not exist at all. And the consequences of trusting a wrong one are among the worst in practice - a design that cannot get sanction, a building that violates the byelaws, a liability that lands squarely on the professional.
So use the agent within a strict frame. It is legitimately useful to have it help you locate the relevant regulations (which document, which authority governs this site), to summarise and explain complex provisions so you understand them faster, and to flag considerations you might have missed. It is never acceptable to take its statement of a rule as the rule. Every binding regulatory fact must be verified against the current official source - the actual development-control regulations, the current municipal byelaws, the sanctioning authority itself - and where the stakes or the ambiguity are high, confirmed with the authority or a professional who deals with them daily. This is the professional's own responsibility and the duty of care in its most concrete form: you are the one who answers for whether the design complies, and 'the agent said the setback was three metres' is not a defence anyone will accept. Gather with the agent; rely only on the authority.
From dossier to insight - reading the place is yours
Once the dossier is assembled and its facts verified, the most important work remains, and it is not something an agent can do: turning information about a site into insight about a design. A dossier is data; a site analysis is an interpretation - a reading of what this place wants, what it offers, what it forbids, and how a building or a room should respond. That leap from information to design response is a creative and judgemental act, saturated with the things the agent lacks, and it is where the human designer's contribution to site work really lives.
An agent can list a site's constraints and opportunities in generic terms - 'north light available on this edge', 'noise from the arterial road to the south', 'flood risk in the low corner' - and that is a useful checklist. But knowing that a constraint exists is different from knowing what to do about it, and knowing what a place is really like is different from knowing its data. The feel of a site - its light at different hours, its sounds and smells, the way people move through and around it, the views that matter, the trees worth keeping, the intangible sense of place that a good building answers to - is something you learn by standing on it, not by reading an agent's summary of it. No dossier substitutes for a real site visit, and no remote assembly of data substitutes for the designer's own perception and response. The agent gets you to the starting line faster and better informed; the race - the design response to the place - is yours to run.
So the pattern for the whole module comes to rest here. Let the agent assemble the dossier and accelerate the gathering that used to eat your first days on a project, so you arrive at the site already informed and can spend your attention on perceiving and responding. Verify every hard fact at its source and every binding rule at the authority, because you carry the consequences of every one of them. And keep for yourself the two things that are irreducibly the designer's: the reading of the place that no data captures, and the design judgement that turns a verified understanding of a site into a building that belongs there. That division - agent on the assembly, human on the perception, verification joining them - is agentic site work done well, and it completes the picture of agents across early design: powerful help on the surrounding work, the judgement and the responsibility always yours.

Even when the shell exists, context matters to interior and spatial work - the building's orientation and light, the neighbourhood and access, acoustic and environmental conditions, and any regulations that bind a fit-out (fire, egress, accessibility, heritage, change-of-use). An agent can assemble this context quickly, which is valuable on an unfamiliar building or city. Verify the hard facts - light and orientation by visiting, any code or heritage constraint at the authority - and never take a regulatory limit on a fit-out from the agent's word. And keep for yourself what data cannot give: the felt experience of the actual space, how people move and dwell in it, the sense of the place a good interior answers to. Site analysis is a foundational design skill, and an agent can teach you the breadth of what a thorough site study covers - climate, context, regulation, precedent - while never doing the seeing for you. Use it to assemble a dossier and to learn what strands a real analysis includes, then practise the discipline that matters: sourcing every climate number, verifying every regulation at its actual authority, and confirming the exact location so you do not analyse the wrong place. Above all, learn early that a dossier is not a site analysis: the leap from data to a design response, and the reading of a real place you can only get by standing on it, are the designer's own work.
